Yes- the new ARRL website isn't as user-friendly as the previous one, for it took me quite awhile to find out where they were hiding their ARRL publications such that one could easily retrieve previous QST articles. Anyho- the path to ARRL publications is found under their Technology Tab, i.e. http://www.arrl.org/technology. Then once you are in this webpage, in the middle of the page - under ARRL and Technology and The ARRL Laboratory - you will finally arrive at the line that you are seeking, viz. Re: [AMRadio] Modulator question.
Greetings from a lurker -- Dick has an interesting idea here and I enjoy pretending that I know how to play the numbers g so here goes... Let's use the 200w figure with a car amp with a bridge amplifier powered by the car's 12v battery, and for the moment we will neglect the losses. The amp's output transistors will produce a maximum output voltage swing of 6v peak (12 v peak to peak.) With a sine wave, the rms voltage will be about 0.707 x 6vpk = 4.24vrms. The AC rms current at the 200w output level will be about 200w/4.24v = 47.2 amps to drive an impedance of 4.24v/47.2a = 0.0898 ohms. So now all we need is a couple or three big honkin' car batteries, several feet of car battery/starter-motor cable,a 200w rms car amp that is actually capable of 200w (which will be much larger than what most manufacturers CALL a 200w amp), and a 200w modulation transformer with a primary impedance of 0.0898 ohms. Oh, and don't forget what Larry said about DC current through the secondary of the transformer... and we still haven't figured-in the losses. So, is it doable? How much money do you have Dick? g The guys have presented some good options, that are most definately doable. But if your heart is set on ss high-level modulation, there might be a better way to go... Here is an amp that uses +65v/-65v for power instead of +12v/0v: http://www.apexjr.com/Cerwinfullrange.htm With this amp, the max sinewave output voltage is 65v peak, or .707*65vpk = 46vrms. For 200w output the rms current will be 200w/46v = 4.35arms to drive a load of 46v/4.35a = 10.6 ohms. When you figure in the losses, the load will probably need to be closer to 8 ohms -- just perfect for that off-the-shelf 200w audio output transformer. g In reality, I suspect the transformer will be a problem -- but not an impossibility. I think it's worth a shot Dick! Al disclaimer: I have no connection with apexjr.com other than being a satisfied customer. Dick wrote: I have over the years built several low power AM transmitters. I would like to build something a little bigger say in the 400-500 watt plate modulated. I have been kicking around the idea of using one of the solid state amplifiers made for car audio driving a reverse connected audio transformer. I have seen these audio output transformers available in the 200 watt range. I understand that the RF output stage would have to be designed to fit the impedence of the output transformer. Does this sound like it could be done? Re: [AMRadio] T/R Switching
Hi Brian, There are several options. I use an old Dow-Key relay with my DX-60. It's powered from the accessory socket on the back of the DX-60 (117 volts, as I recall), and is energized when you rotate the function switch to AM or CW. Also, if you can't find a Dow-Key at a reasonable price you can build your own relay box. I used two 117V relays from Radio Shack. The first relay controls the antenna switching, and the other unmutes my receiver. The box also has three female coax connectors just like the Dow-Key relay (one connects to DX-60, one to your receiver, and one to your antenna). Check you receiver's schematic to find out what's required to unmute your receiver. If you leave the Receive/Standby switch in Standby, your receiver's muting and unmuting can be controlled by the second relay. Your receiver's accessory socket should have pin-outs for that relay. In some receivers it's just a matter of completing a ground connection to unmute' your receiver. Be careful, though...other receivers may require you to switch B+ voltage. In my set-up I use the Dow-Key to control my vintage CW station, and the home-brew box to control the two AM stations. Hope this helps! 73, Bob K6GCN - Original Message - From: Brian Zwiener bzwie...@sbcglobal.net To: AMRadio@mailman.qth.net Sent: Tuesday, May 11, 2010 2:45:31 PM GMT -08:00 US/Canada Pacific Subject: [AMRadio] T/R Switching I have Purchased a gem of a Heathkit DX-60 AM Transmitter.I was wondering if someone had a better idea that what I have for T/R switching. Re: [AMRadio] Painting recessed panell markings
Since your panel is painted this might not be good info, but on anodized panels you wipe or brush some fill paint (white enamel maybe?) over the engraved nomenclature and wipe off the excess with a rag dampened with the proper solvent for the paint you're using. I have seen engraving / machine shop people use a tooth pick to dab paint into engraved letters. When wiping off the excess it might help to use a rag that's stretched over a flat piece of plastic or wood so that your fingers aren't actually pushing the cleaning rag down into the letters / numbers and removing paint you want to remain in place. If you've painted the panel with enamel, I guess you could fill the nomenclature with Latex paint and use a rag dampened with water which shouldn't hurt the panel's finish. Re: [AMRadio] Painting recessed panell markings
I did this recently with a national receiver that I repainted. A white lacquer stick will do a good job filling in the depression. I used artist's paint with no thinner and a small brush to dab it into the recessed area. I wiped it off with a dry paper towel. You will not get all of it off, but after it dries, you can use a polishing compound, very fine sand paper or steel wool to remove the very small amount of excess. Then car wax to polish the entire panel. arnie - W1GCI -Original Message- From: BILL GUYGER [mailto:bguy...@sbcglobal.net] Sent: Wednesday, May 12, 2010 01:13 PM To: 'Discussion of AM Radio in the Amateur Service' Subject: Re: [AMRadio] Painting recessed panell markings Since your panel is painted this might not be good info, but on anodized panels you wipe or brush some fill paint (white enamel maybe?) over the engraved nomenclature and wipe off the excess with a rag dampened with the proper solvent for the paint you're using. Re: [AMRadio] Painting recessed panell markings
I also had good results using a white lacquer stick on a National receiver as well as the panel and knobs of a 1924 Freed-Eismann receiver. The red lacquer stick is a perfect match for the line on Hallicrafter knobs such as the SX-99.
