Re: [AMRadio] AM list still active???

2010-06-15 Thread Mark K3MSB
If 10M or 6M is open, 30W with a dipole at 40 feet will do fine on either
band.

If the band is not open, 300W and a 5 element yagi will get you nowhere.

10 has been open almost as often as 6 meter but not with the same
intensity and coverage. As I type this 9:10 PM EDT, 10 meters is only
open from the East Coast to the Caribbean and 6 meters is only open from
the West Coast to Japan.

I think I can maybe get on 10 with 30 watts, but only with a dipole up 40 feet.

But don't limit yourself to that frequency. Two or three guys, who can't
hear each other all calling CQ on the same frequency, doesn't work. I
generally call CQ on AM around 50.39 or 50.395, and end it with, "tuning
around for a call"(for those that might be rock bound). Lots of empty
space above 50.3 for AM (actually lots of space above 50.2 when the band

Re: [AMRadio] AM list still active???

2010-06-15 Thread Howard Weinstein
The Heath Sixer was a great little radio - I worked up and down the East Coast
with that rig and a couple of crystals using a Hilltopper 3 element 6 Meter
Beam from Melrose Park just outside of Philadelphia PA

Great Stuff! I am at my "Day Job" at a Medium Wave Broadcast Station
now, but will get back on 6 AM when I get out of here.

I use a Heathkit HW-29A Sixer...AKA a "Benton Harbor Lunchbox" With a
Dipole 50 Feet in the air.

2010-06-15 Thread manualman
Just worked a guy in Europe on 6 meters using my Clegg 66'er on AM and
Ameco VFO621 as a beat oscillator to receive the other station on SSB. He
said I had some carrier on my signal. Told him I was on AM so he then
flipped his PRO II(III?) to AM and we a brief exchange on that mode.

Still here, Gary - and welcome back! Though with the current temps,
you might wish you'd stayed in Shinbone. Pushing 100 here in NC the
last few days.

As Jim says, things really quiet down on here once better wx is here
to stay. Yard work, home repairs, vacations, etc still seem to take
priority over radio. Sounds crazy, doesn't it? (o:

Look forward to working you again soon, though with the current
waterfall of static, it might be next fall!

The most recent activity I've noticed was a fellow asking if anyone
knew of a Murch universal transmatch available. This was followed by a
torrent of folks criticizing and counter-criticizing the design of that
tuner in a negative tone. I lost track if anyone actually answered the
original question or not.

Yes Gary, it is still active. Lack of much activity must be because of
the summer doldrums. Long days, short nights and all.
