Congrats Scott..you'll be making many more...
Made my first one in July of 1980 on O7, and made several more on O7

"Obviously" you did not consider my personal response as to SDR Radios

Not yet ... I just received my first issue as a new member of AMSAT-UK ... SO
my copy is a couple weeks away, probably.
And i asked if members had access to .pdf copies of their newsletters - nope
was the answer.
Graham, for what platform/OS do you need a sat tracker? I have used several

Kevin,
I agree with Jeff. The last time there were dedicated VHF radios was
when Heath still made them. But today you can find very nice HF
radio kits and 2m and 70cm transceiver kits, which together make a
fine multi-mode VHF/UHF radio.
I would recommend the K2 HF radio kit from Elecraft

Yeah, Scott! Congrats! There's nothing like the first contact. May there be
many more to follow.
I remember mine well, like it was yesterday. June 13, 1993, to be exact.

Insulting people probably won't get you what you're looking for.
I did a search of the QST archive and came up empty, so I doubt if there was
an article (I could be mistaken). Most kits out there are for HF equipment
usually QRP (low power), I don't personally know of a 2m/70cm kit of any
kind
Did anyone see this article?
How can I obtain a copy?

Hi All,
Is there another forum, because obviously everyone here just buys everything
and maybe have forgotten what this hobby is all about!
I know there is a kit out there for a receiver and or a SSB converter.
2-meter/70cm SSB receiver. I heard there was an article in QST so it must exist.

Like most things on the bb, this is not a new topic. Several years ago, on the
first cruise I took out of Galveston, TX, I followed (exactly) the advice from
Allen, N5AFV, on his various web articles. You can get a good overview here
and links to more details as well:

since attachments aren't allowed, I've made an unlisted youtube video of the
first contact for the group.
Thanks!

I didn't expect to be contributing to this thread, but Bob WB4APR's posting

Permission to operate is always at the discretion of the captain or master of

The Ramsey pre-amps are high gain and sensitive particularly considering the
price. I use them on a discone for general reception, usually hooked to a
PCR-1000. The only problem I have had is lightning susceptability. I have never
had one survive a summer on the Virginia coast. I want to try aga
SDR type radio if you like...but why not a simple down-converter and
"leave the driving" to an already existing HF radio?

Bryan,
I built a cheap (about $17 as I recall) little Ramsey UHF preamp in a small

Very sad indeed, but due to the name of the spacecraft,I can't help
thinking of an old campfire song (He jumped from 4 feet),

therefore it will not have enough velocity to enter orbit.

Hi,
In my experience, pre launch keps don't have a checksum. They just show the key
numbers that define the orbit.
My tracking software wont load them automatically. If you key them in manually
it should work fine. You can then run the software and see how the passes will
look for your QTH.
