Hi,
I've been listening on a couple of ARISSat-1 passes, both with the bird in
sunlight. The first time I vaguely heard what might have been a voice. The
second time (and this one was 80 or 85 degrees elevation) I could clearly
hear that there was a voice, but could not understand,

Was the pass high or low elevation? I had a pass this morning, all in high

access the transponder easily. After TCA, it was much harder at the same

These modes are confusingly named. The transmit power is the same in
both; what changes is the power consumption. Better to think of it as
high vs low duty cycle. I don't recall the low power duty cycle for

Mike,
High and low power refers more accurately to power consumption rather than
transmitted power. Low power means a less than 100% duty cycle. Many of
the popular tracking programs such as SATPC32 and MacDoppler will tell you

Hi Floyd,
Yes, you can. Recording the full 80kHz bandwidth for a 10 min pass
(duration of ARISSat-1 passes, roughly) creates a BIG wavefile around 250MB
in size. You can play it back and decode whatever you want, whenever you
want.I've been doing that regularly, which results in about 1GB
You can get an idea of how close to eclipse a satellite is by watching Delphi

I agree on the possibility of some line loss to the unit. The longer the
coax run the more problems you may have with it properly switching. I
found this to be especially true of the early models of the Mirage mast
mounted preamps. Even the power T can be a problem if the wire run is
long.
On this, would it be possible to power preamps for 70cm and 2m through coax
if the antennas are split using a diplexer? Or would 12v go to both on TX
and fry one of them?

Gawd, with all that talent and dedication, I wish the board would have made a
proclamation that the board would consist of THREE one-year termers. AMSAT-NA
could use ALL their experience for our future.
Look carefully at the power consumption on the preamp. If it is less
than the max for the 847 (which I forget the maximum current), you could
use it powered from the radio. BUT pay careful attention that anything
between the radio and the preamp does not provide a dead short from
