[android-beginners] Re: HELP: A Verizon Droid puzzle.

2010-07-12 Thread whitemice
Hi Chris
Was that a Motorola Droid running on Verizon in the US? ...and did
the UI say something like 1 minute ago a minute after making a call
(zero second call will do) without you clicking on the Widget? If so,
it looks like I have a smaller cluster than I thought.

Thanks for the test.

 Subject: [android-beginners] HELP: A Verizon Droid puzzle.

 I am based in Germany and publish the Last Call Widget on the
 Android Market.  I have been steady improving it over time, but one
 group of users still complain about it not working on their devices.

 My widget listens for the android.intent.action.PHONE_STATE intent,
 and then sets an alarm to update the last call UI in 20 seconds, then
 60 seconds, then 5 minutes, 1 hour, etc.  This works reliably on all
 my test devices, even with aggressive task killers (try it yourself).
 Unfortunately I have a cluster of users with Motorola Droids on the
 Verizon network who complain that the UI does not automatically
 update.

 I believe Verizon is a CDMA network (we have GSM here in Europe),
 though the Android API docs don't specify any implementation
 differences.  This could also be a driver issue on the Motorola Droid
 (we have GSM Motorola Milestones in Europe).

 I am wondering if anyone reading is in a position to offer any ideas,
 or test the widget on a Droid and/or CDMA network to see if they can
 reproduce an issue (with logs)?

 Regards
 Mark

[android-beginners] Re: Help converting C# code (Isn't there anyone that will help out here)

2010-03-28 Thread Andreas
Hi,

You can subclass View or Button and implement onDraw. There you will
have a Canvas, that you can use for your painting. You can use the
onTouchEvent or the onTouch-listener to take care of the touches.

Good luck!

[android-beginners] Re: Help with displaying HTML formatted strings from an ArrayAdapter

2010-03-26 Thread PKC
Try this:

String[] plainStrings =
getResources().getStringArray(R.array.history);
Spanned[] htmlStrings = new Spanned[plainStrings.length];
for(int i = 0 ; i  plainStrings.length; i++) {
htmlStrings[i] = Html.fromHtml(plainStrings[i]);
}
setListAdapter(new ArrayAdapterCharSequence(this,
R.layout.list_item, htmlStrings));

[android-beginners] Re: Help with sound aplication

2010-03-03 Thread BobG
So your app is going to be a simple waveform synthesizer. BUT...
without a velocity sensing keyboard, you cant get a piano sound... you
will get an organ sound... the tone starts when you press the key, and
stops when you get a key up. You can impose an Attack Sustain Decay
Release envelope on each note, but every note will sound the same
whether you hit the touch screen real hard, or real soft.

I had the same problem.
USB debugging has to be turned on in settings.
Also, the SD card may be set as Mounted, but double check by using

[android-beginners] Re: Help with sound aplication

2010-03-02 Thread Maxood
You have to look into the media player API in Android
i.e.android.media.MediaPlayer;
android.media.MediaPlayer.OnCompletionListener . Here it is:
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/media/package-summary.html

And that is how you play a sound on firing a click listener:

private OnClickListener btnDontBeStupidListener = new
OnClickListener()
{
public void onClick(View v)
{
  //Toast.makeText(getBaseContext(), Don't Be Stupid audio file
is being played, Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();

  final MediaPlayer mp = MediaPlayer.create(iMEvil.this,
R.raw.stupid);

  //mp.start();

  try {
  mp.start();
  //mp.release();
  }catch(NullPointerException e){
Log.v(MP error, e.toString());
  }

  mp.setOnCompletionListener(new OnCompletionListener(){

  // @Override
  public void onCompletion(MediaPlayer arg0) {
 mp.release();

  }
 });
}
};

Hope this helps.

 like to record in a text file what buttons I've been presing and how
 much time (just similar to midi format), so I could reproduce it

 The question is: what media resource should I use? I should record the

[android-beginners] Re: Help with Random number generator

2010-01-28 Thread Lance Nanek
Looks like you are calling setText(int resid) whereas what you really
want is setText(CharSequence text):
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/widget/TextView.html#setText(int)
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/widget/TextView.html#setText(java.lang.CharSequence)

Convert your integer to a String before calling to fix it. Use
Integer.toString(int i) or concatenate it to an empty String, for
example.

Also, random.nextInt(9) returns 0 to 8, both ends inclusive.

 1) For listening for broadcast SMS messages through a broadcast
 receiver, I see that you have to defined the action, for the intent in
 the broadcast receiver element as:

   receiver android:name=.myClassName
   intent-filter
   action android:name=
   android.provider.Telephony.SMS_RECEIVED /
   /intent-filter

   First, where is that name

 android.provider.Telephony.SMS_RECEIVED defined? How am I supposed to
 track that down in the API Doc?

 There is no android.provider.Telephony class or package.

   Second, in the code for receiving the actual broadcast, I see
 you need to do something like this to get the message(s).

   Object[] pdus = (Object[]) bundle.get(pdus);

   Where is it defined that the extra name in the bundle is pdus
 for SMS messages.

 Thanks,
 Joe

[android-beginners] Re: Help getting Hello world to go

2009-11-19 Thread Susan
From Eclipse, if you go to Window»Preferences and then choose Android
from the left panel, do you have the correct directory specified for
the SDK location? (Screenshot of mine is here: http://screencast.com/t/MDRlNWFm)

If you do indeed have the correct path there, what (if any) items are
listed in the big box under Target Name?

 I have the Android SDK R3 (latest?)
 I have the ADT plugin

 I have checked for updates etc and all seams well. Following the steps

 get an error in the command line please set ANDEROID_SWT to the

 Looking at the bat file it is like the GOTO statement is not running

 I have manulay set swt_path but this does not help.
 So fare I can't get past the first step to set an AVD.

[android-beginners] Re: Help with installation on Mac.

2009-11-12 Thread Ram
Thanks. I just did something that I should've tried right away. I
deleted the entire installation, and re-installed by expanding the zip
file. This time I left the outside folder name intact (I changed it
when I'd installed the previous time). So, when I tried to add
packages - I was able to see the platform packages fine now, and
downloading and installing them went on smoothly..

 display all the APIs and Platform.

 I remembering see that error when I clicked the arrow next to the /

 The AVD window will remain empty until you install a platform.

[android-beginners] Re: Help with creating a sport scoring application

2009-11-11 Thread Sam
thanks for replying carol
i want to learn in t process as well as it would be great if
someone takes care of major part of the development
i do not know how to write the logic ...i just know how shud the final
app be...
for example...
when you add runs...i guess u use counters
these counters should add the score to the respective player in the
player table and at the same time add to team score

i want to focus mainly on cricket with this app first and later if its
good
move on to other sport apps which use extensive statistics

do u think anything can be done?

  if anyone wants to join me (can share the rights) or help me out in

  i have a solid business plan for this app...

  the basic idea of the app is as follows

  in any sportat any given event has finite set of outcomes
  so the interface is an intuitive interface to score and keep
  statistics...
  usually sport scoring applications are very very clumsy with all the
  options on one screen

  in this...v start from idle postion ...lets say in cricket t idle
  position is the bowler bowling the ball
  once the bowler bowls ...there are finite outcomes
  ...the screen shows only those options required at THAT point of
  time...the next screens depend on the option u chooseif you choose
  out...the next screen will ask u how he was out
  if its a run...then next options wil be how many ...next will be wich
  area...n so on

  i believe the app needs strong database and data counters its all
  confusing for me
  but i am very clear abt the requirements for the app
  plz contact me if any one is interested

[android-beginners] Re: Help getting platform

2009-11-02 Thread mobiledude
Here is a solution that worked for me. It came from one of the posters
the Android SDK 2.0 is here! thread. You might want to check that
thread out. Note that you may have to force the use http instead of
https by checking the appropriate box in the Settings of the AVD
Manager. Be sure to click the Save Apply button (this button
should work once you have applied the fix shown below).

I found a solution to the problem of running the Android SDK manager
on Ubuntu 9.10. For some reason you first need to export
GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=true. The following command works:

br...@erisa:~/android-sdk-linux/tools$ GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=true ./

 my N95), but I can't get it working on Devphone.

 I've registered the APN using the same config I found at some forums

 Is there anything else I need to do?

[android-beginners] Re: Help! I get this error message concerning the AVD

2009-10-16 Thread Xavier Ducrohet
Hello all,

yes it looks like there's a bug in the emulator where it can't deal with
those characters in the path.

To fix this you can override the location where all the android tools look
for those files.

create a system wide environment variable called ANDROID_SDK_HOME and
containing a path that doesn't include those non ascci char.
The android tools will create a .android folder in it, and the emulator
will access it too.

We'll see about fixing the emulator too.

I was wondering how to access log messages of errors. I finally found
out I had to activate debugging for the app and switch to the debug
perspective in Eclipse. Now it seems that I have a null pointer
exception on the very line where I setOnclickListener() ! There is no
more information.

What is causing the null pointer exception from the code excerpt I
shared?

Anything you can do in XML, you can do programmatically. The TextView

You can also set the attributes in their constructors:

TextView(Context context, AttributeSet attrs)

[android-beginners] Re: help

2009-09-16 Thread Raphael

You're mixing a few things:
- the id of a view (i.e. R.id.calculate_id) is just that: an
identifier that lets you *find* the object in question.
- you can't assign to that id, it's just a constant integer

Instead you should do:
- find the view based on the id:
EditText myEditField = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.calculate_id);

- use some of the EditText methods to change the text:
   http://developer.android.com/reference/android/widget/EditText.html
e.g:
  myEditField.setText(42);

I *strongly* suggest you get an introductory book on Android or look
at some of the samples under SDK/platform-1.6/samples/

[android-beginners] Re: Help with Activites

2009-08-19 Thread Neilz

Thanks for the replies. Two more questions...

1) When the activity is started from the main activity, I would want
the user to click a button to indicate they have finished, and to
return to the initial activity again. What's the best way to ensure
that the original one is displayed as before?

2) My original question was actually more directed towards the device,
rather than from a programming point of view. I was wondering how, on
the device, you can see what is running - like for example in Windows
where you can see all the applications in the taskbar, or even the
list of apps in the task manager. Does android have anything similar?

[android-beginners] Re: Help with Activites

2009-08-19 Thread Justin Anderson
1) When an activity is started from another, to the best of my knowledge,
the only way to get back to the original activity is to use the back button
on the device (assuming the activity is not one you created). If the second
activity is one you created, then you could probably place a button on it
that simulates the behavior of the back button.

2) Android does not have anything built into the OS that allows you to see
what is running. The only built-in way to switch between running
applications is to launch it again they way it was initially launched.
However, there are several apps that you can download that provide this
functionality, and I am working on one myself.

Thanks,
Justin

 Where do all the activities go?

 What I mean is... My app contains a list. When I click on an item, I
 fire up a new activity. Potentially I could do the same again, and
 again. Are all these activities still running? If so, how can I switch
 between them, or view a list of which activities are running?

I believe that Android (SO) manage the activity itself on the
ActivityStack, so the ones that are inactive or stop are killed or asked to
close in order to keep a memory manage optimize thats why is strongly advice
to save you instance properties

remember the Activity LifeCycle you find the answer here
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/app/Activity.html

 If I go back to the main menu and start my app, it behaves as if it's
 just started, so there's no evidence of any of the other activities
 still running.

well this is because you haven't saved your instance values (Bundles)

 I'm working on the emulator here, naturally.

[android-beginners] Re: Help with Activites

2009-08-18 Thread Justin Anderson
You can use the ActivityManager class to get a list of activities that are
considered to be running by Android.

In actuality they are paused, since you can only have one running activity
at a time.

You can also get a list of running processes via the ActivityManager class.
Unlike activities, processes actively run in the background.

in.close();
out.close();
listfiles();
System.out.println(File Copied);
}
catch (Exception e){

}

 private void listfiles(){
FilenameFilter fil=null;
String destination = /data/data/com.example.test2/data/;
File fileCon[] = new File(destination).listFiles(fil);
for (int n=0;nfileCon.length;n++)

}

public void Openfile(String filename){
try

Hope this helps other newbies who can't figure out file creation.

Are you sure you added android SDK path do you PATH environment variable?

Optionally, you may want to add the location of the SDK's primary
toolsdirectory to your system PATH. The primary
tools/ directory is located at the root of the SDK folder. Adding tools to
your path lets you run Android Debug Bridge (adb) and the other command line
tools http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/index.htmlwithout
needing to supply the full path to the tools directory.

[android-beginners] Re: Help with threading and UI changes

2009-07-24 Thread moazzamk

Ah, I can't believe I did that. Sorry about that and thanks for your
advice. The error was that eclipse kept telling me I was providing the
wrong context. And, that the method with such a signature didn't
exist. It wouldn't let me even compile the code (let alone run it).
Somehow the same code works now without any changes. Although, I added
the other activity to my manifest file so maybe that was the issue.

I will take a look at the other methods you suggested.

 You can:

 which the service calls a method upon

 2. Broadcast an intent, receiving it in your activity

 Please remember that your activity may not be there -- Android and the

[android-beginners] Re: Help with Services

2009-05-29 Thread Hamy

Sujay,
It sounds like you have your own activity starting the UploadActivity?
If so, and if startActivityForResult() always returns the same value,
regardless of whether the upload was successful or not, then I think
you will have to do the upload on your own. AFAIK, you cannot make a
service that you do not own talk to an activity that you do own. IPC
is (again, only as far as I know) a two way street, both parties have
to be interested in setting up the binding or it does not occur.

However, that being said - how about you link us to where you found
this UploadActivity? The docs on it might have some insight. Also,
have you been testing what it returns when you do not successfully
upload? It may just be returning the same value because it always
succeeds, so be sure to make it fail and see what happens - perhaps
kill the internet connection midway?

Thanks,
Hamy

  can anyone temme how i can do this???

 You can:

 1. Use a callback or listener object, passed from activity to the service,
 which the service calls a method upon

 2. Broadcast an intent, receiving it in your activity

 Please remember that your activity may not be there -- Android and the
 user have the right to close up your activity while the service is still
 running. So you might:

 3. Use a Notification, so you let the user know of completed work, rather
 than telling a possibly non-existent activity.

[android-beginners] Re: Help with layout views and Canvas'

2009-05-16 Thread Raphael

If you want a linear set of buttons use a LinearLayout.
If you want a grid, simply put a TableLayout in your XML with several
TableRow inside.
You can use ImageButton to have a button with an image in the middle
(use the src attribute).

All the widgets derive from View, which has a background attribute
so you can change the background to an image or a gradient on any of
your widgets.

 Hi,

 I'm pretty new to the whole app developing scene and i've never coded

 I've been making reasonable process on the app I'm working on, I've
 figured out using the main.xml to create a relative layout for my UI.
 In the UI I've managed to create an imageview that i've been able to
 update to scroll through a bunch of images by pressing a button.
 Pretty simple stuff so far.

 Now, here comes my problem.

 I want to create an area seperate of this imageview that will also
 display a background image, and then, multiple images atop that
 background image at specific locations. I will eventually want these
 images to be clickable.

 From reading many an article it seems that the way to display an image
 at a specific location and do all sorts of fancy stuff with it is by
 using a canvas. but this doesnt appear to be a valid viewtype in the
 layout xml. I found a basic tutorial that created a drawview class,
 which I managed to work in, but it only allows me to have either that
 layout, or the one in my xml file. I've tried inserting this class
 into my main.xml by following this tut
 http://www.anddev.org/creating_custom_views_-_the_togglebutton-t310.html
 but it doesnt seem to work.

 I think i'm probably overcomplicating the issue, but if anyone could
 point me at some resources that could show me how to acheive this, or
 could offer any help on it, I would be most appreciative.

 In Summary :-
 I have a ui layout that I want to use.
 I want to add in a canvas area in this layout (can't figure out how)
 with the canvas I want to be able to place multiple images at specific
 locations
 I want these images to be clickable.

[android-beginners] Re: help compiling Android sourcecode apps

2009-05-14 Thread Raphael

The apps that come in the Android source code are not built using the
SDK. They are built using the Android platform (e.g. the make files)
and may or may not be using internal APIs which are not part of the
SDK.

Questions on building the platform should go to
http://groups.google.com/group/android-platform.

 It appears that a lot of the import statements in the MMS Classes are
 referencing files that don't exist.  for example there is no
 android.provider.Calendar class in the SDK, but the MMS sourcecode
 seems to think there is.

 I was under the impression that Android native apps were no different
 than any other developer apps, so shouldn't their sourcecode compile
 like any other?  I thought it may also be an SDK version thing, but it
 doesn't seem to compile under v1.1 or 1.5 of the SDK.

 Any help would be much appreciated.  thanks.

[android-beginners] Re: Help! Android Prob.

I've faced the same thing: emulator starts to load, but gets stuck on
the android logo screen. The simplest way to make it work - just
close the emulator and run a sample that should 100% work. Hello

Right after you got your emulator loaded - try running your

[android-beginners] Re: help with my installation ADT and SDK in eclipse

2009-02-19 Thread susanner
thank god, I finally find the reason of my problem. It comes from access
permission based on linux. I have root permission of SDK and home permission of
eclipse, so after I change the SDK authority permission using command

sudo chown -R gzh:gzh android-sdk-linux_x86-1.0_r1/

I can successfully lauch my android apidemo application finally.

Hi,
It is not easy to 'damage' R.java file.
Do you see error (exc. mark) on your png file in res folder?

Did you make sure that your filename is correct? (no CAPITAL for
example, even in file extension).

You can also try deleting file from res folder, right click and
refresh folder and than import your file again.

[android-beginners] Re: help getting started

2008-12-15 Thread CurtisCLaugh

Unfortunately, the getting started docs don't help you trouble shoot
installing JDK 5 or 6, or Eclipse. My issue involves the installation
of these two apps on Vista, which is probably my problem.

My first issue was with eclipse, when I ran the app (from my desktop)
it failed to find ../eclipse/jre/bin/javjw.exe file, so I simply
copied the jre directory from my java install into the eclipse folder.

When I ran eclipse again, I got an app exit code of -1 (whatever that
means) and some more jargon about needing java version 1.5 (i had
1.6), so I downloaded 1.5 but I don't think it's compatible with Vista
because it wouldn't install.

I found some answers on the internet about adding the java bin
directory path to the classpath variable under the environment
variables, but no luck.

Is there a way to get the vista compatible versions of jdk and eclipse
and is there a certain order to installing them and android?

Thanks.

[android-beginners] Re: help with eclipse

2008-12-02 Thread Christine

in Eclipse in Window/preferences/java/installed jre's you can set the
jre Eclipse is using. Check if that matches the location of the jre or
jdk on your computer.

 Are you sure that JDK has been intalled before you start Eclipse?
 Or try this:
 C:\eclipse\eclipse.exe   -vm   C:\Program

yeah before you install eclipse you will have to install JDK
once the JDK is installed eclipse will automatically detect JVM and will
work fine

THanks
