You might have to do some catching of exceptions in your ItemizedOverlay and/or LocationOverlay classes. There are some bugs eg on Motorola phones that lead to unexpected exceptions on some phones/ versions of phones/versions of Android. I can't find the links at the moment, there is a discussion of this on stackoverflow...
