[android-developers] What is an ideal platform for carrying out Augmented Reality developments in an under-powered iMac?

Google recently launched 'AR' Core, which gives you the power to carry
out 'AR' developments through these three platforms: Android
Studio,Unity,Unreal Engine. I have an under powered iMac which can
handle simple low energy consuming processes smoothly but as soon as I
installed Unreal Engine and started creating some simple 3D objects
the Mac started to hang, everything started freezing and I started
encountering tremendous Lag across the OS, so I had to ultimately quit
Unreal Engine, now that my mac wasn't able to handle Unreal Engine. I
have two options left either use Unity which costs you some dollars or
use Android Studio,

So, my question is which one should I prefer Android Studio or Unity
(I don't want to risk my money on this - cause I have a fear that it
will also freeze and crash my iMac like it happened for Unreal Engine)
, so that I can carry out my 'AR' developments smoothly and lag free!

[android-developers] Android touch event misinterpreted as drag

Hi!

I'm making an Android game in Unity3D. The game is about hitting virtual
buttons on screen at the right time. Sometimes, the buttons are adjacent to
each other and user has to press more than 1 button, say 2 at once or one
after another.

I've ran into a problem where on some devices it was really hard to press
those adjacent buttons. The first button I would hit would always register
correctly but the second button not always registered a hit. After doing a
thorough investigation and profiling of my code I assumed it must be
outside of the scope of my code. I turned on Android's built-in input
debugging overlays and did some digging. Here's what I found.

A single tap in my game looks like this:

The red circle with screen coordinates are objects inside my game
(simplified here to demonstrate the issue). The coordinates 901x204 are
the coordinates of the pixel hit in game, starting from lower left corner.
Beneath the circle is a small red dot - that's Android's built-in touch
indicator which can be enabled in developer settings of the operating
system. The big, red ingame circle is placed directly above the Android
touch indicator - so that they don’t overlap.

This is how a multi-touch input (double tap) looks like:

Two dots, two circles, so far so good.

Now, if I would touch the screen with my middle finger first (the right
side below), then quickly followed by a touch with my pointer finger (left
side below), this is how the input looks like most of the time:

So what just happened? My game got two touch events, as indicated by the
red circles with coordinates. They are in the correct position. But the
Android's touch indicators look weird. What happened is that the moment I
touched the screen with my pointing finger (left side), the system thought
for a split second, that I was dragging my middle finger. The system
quickly realized that it's actually a second touch and fired a second touch
event where it should, meanwhile dragging the middle finger back to it's
position. This introduced a slight delay to the secondary touch but is
bearable.

Now, some of the times, when I touch with two fingers close by, instead of
the situation described above I get this:

I did exactly the same thing as I did previously: middle finger touch
quickly followed by a pointing finger touch close by.

As you can see, the game registered two hits in almost exactly the same
position. The Android touch indicators show a single touch (small red dot
below the drag line) for the middle finger and a drag originating from the
middle finger position to pointing finger position. This problem makes my
game unplayable on certain devices.

Now that I'm aware of the problem and I understand what's actually going
on, I can potentially solve it inside my game, e.g. by making my in game
buttons responding not just to touch events but also to drag events. Such a
solution won't be perfect though, it will make the game playable on the
affected devices but it will introduce input delays which negatively impact
UX.

Given the above, I wonder what is this behavior caused by? Is this an
Android bug? Faulty device? The input sensors not precise enough?

Or is it actually an intentional Android input optimization that makes
sense for normal applications? If so, is there a way to turn this
optimization off?

Has anybody ever experienced similar problems? Is there something I could
do about this issue other than trying to do the aforementioned in game fix?

[android-developers] How to measure power consumption of NIC?

I'm looking to measure the contribution of the network card to the power
consumption or battery drain of an Android phone.

I'm running an application through a computer that is tethered to the
phone, which is then sending the packets through to the mobile network. In
other words, I'm using the phone as a proxy but not running any application
on the phone to help me do this.

So far I've tried using ADB with the following command:

$ adb shell dumpsys batterystats

This provides output like the following after sending ~100K packets over 20
minutes:

Estimated power use (mAh): Capacity: 2600, Computed drain: 20.4, actual
drain: 0
Uid 0: 6.93 ( cpu=0.387 wake=5.53 radio=1.01 wifi=0.309 )
...

Compared to the phone sitting idle for 20 minutes:

Estimated power use (mAh): Capacity: 2600, Computed drain: 5.55, actual
drain: 0
Uid 0: 1.72 ( cpu=0.0408 wake=0.0406 radio=1.64 wifi=0.161 )
...

There's a big difference in the battery drain, but I'm unsure how
representative these measurements are for the NIC specifically.

Is the change in the drain from Uid 0 representative of the network card
being used? Or are there more accurate ways of measuring the contribution
of the NIC to the battery drain?

I've check through Bitmap.cpp source code and the framework project 
structure, what I've found is that Notification my invoke this issue.

What stack me most is why this be only aroused only above 7.0, what >7.x 
version android have done to Launcher app?

this problems take a very high ratio in my crash cases, so we team are 
waiting for any solutions.

[android-developers] Android Emulator does not appear in adb devices

I am having trouble connecting to running Android Emulators.  Emulators do 
not connect and appear in the adb devices server list.

1. emulator @Pixel 
A. Android Emulator Pixel:5554 loads with API 24 and is running
2. adb devices
A. List of devices attached is empty
3. system.log shows the following

I have attempted the steps in Example 2 with no success:

Physical Android Pixel and Galaxy Note3 attached via USB will appear in 
android devices.

MacOS Sierra 10.12.6
Android: SDK Tools 26.0.2, Platform Tools 26.0.0, Build Tools 26.0.1, 
Emulator 26.1.4
