I was including the billing library in the app (it was declared in a library as

Re: [android-developers] Notification App Android Studio

2017-02-15 Thread Steve Gabrilowitz
There is at least one app in the Play Store (Mighty Text) that does this.
It appears to actually be 3 different pieces of software:

1) An SMS receiver on the phone, this forwards the necessary information
from the SMS to...

2) some app running on their server which links using your Gmail account
and then forwards the info to...

3) a companion app running on the tablet (or PC if desired) which then
displays the message!

Sorry I can't help with any implementation details but maybe you will find
at least some place to start with what I have given you...

On Mar 1, 2016 10:48 PM, "Danielle Anderson" wrote:

I am trying to create an application that receives text messages from my

Just curious if anyone has any recommendations on where/how to start? The
android developer site has a lot of information show how to implement this
on a wearable device using NotificationCompat.Builder but I am not sure if
this applies to handheld devices as well. Any help would be appreciated!
Thank you!

Sure! Just create your new project with the same application ID and a
version number higher than the old one.

that's not what my logevent does, I have it set up with sharedpreference
so I can easily display it in a window in the app. I gave you the
pertinent code to capture the information you need, again what you choose
to do with it depends on the rest of your app!

Re: [android-developers] Service app without activities

2016-10-18 Thread Steve Gabrilowitz
it's not a Studio thing, it's an Android thing. You can not start a
service until the user explicitly starts an activity first, this is to
prevent a malicious app from covertly starting a service that does nasty
things without the user ever knowing about it! You likely want to give the
user some control over the service anyhow, at least the ability to turn it
on and off. This is nicely accomplished by a configuration activity which
will satisfy the activity requirement.

I'm not sure I understand your problem. Why can't you use the same package
name and keystore? You can select any package name you want when you start

Re: [android-developers] Re: Meta: Changes to new-user moderation policy

2016-09-01 Thread Steve Gabrilowitz
Jason, the problem is that these scums keep changing their email - by the
time an admin can delete their account they have already abandoned it and
moved on to another!

Only answer is to have active moderation where a moderator must approve all
posts from a new account until the owner has "proven themselves". I would
also volunteer as a co-moderator, if we can get maybe half a dozen of us
splitting the task then new posts could be approved fairly quickly.

Re: [android-developers] Versioning System

2016-08-27 Thread Steve Gabrilowitz
The versioning is in 2 parts, the one that really counts is the
versionCode. versionName can be whatever makes sense to you. The way you
have started your numbering scheme 1.3.0 would be the most logical, then
1.3.1, 1.3.2 ... for 1.3 bugfixes and then 1.4.0 for the next new features
etc.

Comparing each pixel will not work, unfortunately the problem is much more
complex. You will need to create some image processing algorithms to
extract various features from each image and then compare them.

Re: [android-developers] button onClick handler retrieve custom attribute value declared in activity_main.xml

2016-08-07 Thread Steve Gabrilowitz
toString() returns a string representation of an object which is not
necessarily the value of the object. your view.getTag() returns an object
which is already a String so all you have to do is cast it to string rather
than using toString() on it

String buttStr = (String) view.getTag(); is what you need

On Aug 7, 2016 3:35 AM, "Thomas Fazekas" wrote:

Dear all,

here is what I want to do : declare a whole bunch of buttons in the
activity_main.xml each of them having one custom tag (in this case it's
called "tag").
All the buttons would share the same onClick handler, where I would use
this custom property value to construct some strings (a URL actually).

Code excerpt :

activity_main.xml

and then in the ActivityMain.java I would use this value :

public class MainActivity extends AppCompatActivity {

@Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
}

public void sendLed(View view){
...
String buttStr = view.getTag().toString();
...
}
}

Now , is that in anyway possible ?
The above construct gets me an NPE.

I am aware that I could use a switch statement (to compare the view.getId()
with the individual ids of the buttons) but that seems a lot of comparisons
for nothing (I would use that additional value "blindly", i.e. it doesn't
matter which button has been pressed)

Re: [android-developers] App Monetization??

I think it depends a lot on the type of app you are trying to monetize. I
have an app which is designed to always be in the background, and the UI is
visible only when configuring. Still haven't figured out any really good
way to handle this one...

Re: [android-developers] Replace app with different app

2016-06-25 Thread Steve Gabrilowitz
Write a little app that just has 1 screen, which contains a message saying
somthing like "this app has been superceded" and a button that launches a
play store intent for the other app. Give it the same package id as your
app (and of course a higher version number). Then upload the "update" to
the play store!

[android-developers] Android watch

2016-05-28 Thread Steve Gabrilowitz
I've developed several apps for phone and tablet and now want to try my
hand at developing a wearable app. Googled some and found numerous
examples of how to send notifications to the watch and tutorials for
setting up a development environment but nothing about how to make the
device run an app with a button/touch/gesture whatever? The app I want to
write is for a Tesla so some sort of UI on the watch is mandatory
(lock/unlock commands etc), what I have in mind is that the commands are
sent via BT to the phone which then performs a REST command on the Tesla
server. Any hints or pointers? Is the watch capable of something like
this?

Also, since I don't currently own an android watch are there any
suggestions for which one to get?

Re: [android-developers] App Android Development

2016-04-01 Thread Steve Gabrilowitz
If you have experience programming on a different platform then one way to
learn is to just dive in - install Android Studio and play with some of the
demo programs and try reading the code. Before doing that google "android
activity lifecycle" and pay careful attention to learning the information
you find there, when you have that down you will find that the code makes a
lot more sense. First demo program you should probably try (not actually a
demo but...) is the little app that studio will completely write for you
when you tell it to start a new app, it will demonstrate the use of the
lifecycle information.

Re: [android-developers] Can we recover lost Android.Keystore file from Android apk?

2016-03-31 Thread Steve Gabrilowitz
If there was a way to recover the keystore from an apk then there would be
such a big security hole as to render the digital signing totally
worthless. Your only recourse is to unpublish, then make a new keystore to
publish under a new package id. Then, make sure that your new keystore is
properly backed up so that you can never lose it again!

Re: [android-developers] First app not working

2016-01-09 Thread Steve Gabrilowitz
I don't think you suck at this, I think you need to have a bit more
patience and remember that there is a learning curve here. First thing you
need to learn is probably how to read a stack trace like the one that
appears at the bottom of your logcat. In this case it is telling you that
you have a null pointer in your MyActivity.OnCreate at line 25 so look at
that line of code and figure out why that is!

Re: [android-developers] Delete an application from google play store

2015-12-30 Thread Steve Gabrilowitz
A different app id means a different app. Keep the app id and upload the
refactored code. Otherwise you will need to create a new play store app
for the new app id, then you can unpublish but not delete the original.

Re: [android-developers] How to new a class extends TelephonyManager?there is no default constructor in TM class.

You don't instantiate it directly, you don't instantiate it at all,
therefore you can not extend it in the conventional sense. What you can do

extensions you want to make you will get better suggestions!

 Does anyone else have this problem?

 I'm on my way to solving it using unit testing scripts, but it would help
 a bunch to know if other developers are suffering though manual
 configuration and what they are trying to setup their Android devices to do.

 Thanks much!

Re: [android-developers] Re: Android studio inished with non-zero exit value 3 error

2015-05-13 Thread Steve Gabrilowitz
Sorry if you don't like the truth, but you were being rude and impatient.
When you post in this forum is it expected that somebody who knows the
answer will enlighten you, not that people will search for the solution for
you. It is also expected that if you should happen to solve the problem
yourself then you will post the solution for the benefit of others, but
apparently you didn't know that either.

On Wed, May 13, 2015 at 9:54 AM, Ristar rista...@gmail.com wrote:

 I am no longer interested in the answer, because I, being better than all

 I am neither fragile nor sensitive. You were being rude, were called out

 *In fact, I would go one step further and suggest that you stop surfing

 Given that your only response is to lash out at those calling you out on
 your behavior, perhaps you should take your own advice.

 The only person responsible for derailing the thread is yourself, and how
 you have chosen to lash out at those that called you out on your rudeness.

 *As I have mentioned earlier the same question was not answered on Stack

 What does that matter? All that shows is that your particular problem is
 a rare one, and that it may take some time for someone to figure out, which
 in turn means you are probably going to have to wait a little bit.

 I've been on this forum since it was created. That doesn't really matter
 other than that I can tell you that people best get answers when they are
 patient, and not rude when they don't get an answer. As I said before, it
 is not uncommon for a period of 2-3 days before someone is able to answer a
 question.

 Can you post a follow-up to your question? Absolutely. Generally I would
 suggest at least waiting 2 days. And when you do, a very simple question
 like Has anyone seen anything like this before? should suffice.

 *I do not appreciate your derailing of the thread.*
 Likewise, I do not appreciate your rudeness. C'est la vie. The only
 person truly responsible for the thread getting derailed is your own.

 This list is answered by people who answer things in their spare time.

 It is not uncommon for answers to take 2-3 days (our longer!) before

 So sit back, wait, grab a cup of coffee, perhaps apologize for being
 rude, and hopefully someone will see your question soon that knows how to

Re: [android-developers] Sending and receiving SMS within my own app and not show in the built in text app

2015-03-31 Thread Steve Gabrilowitz
So basically, you are trying to build a messenger app that uses SMS as a
transport layer but doesn't affect other SMS apps? Try investigating the
use of a data SMS rather than the usual text.
On Mar 31, 2015 5:50 PM, Dan Cha cuban...@gmail.com wrote:

 So im working or playing around with sending text/sms from within our app
 as well as receiving replies. We will have the app on both ends(sender and
 receiver devices)
 But right now just prelim testing the messages are sent but they are
 showing up as text within the default text app on the phone.

 So even though our app sent the message a copy shows up in the default
 text app as sent.

 I have this in the manifest
 receiver android:name=.SMSBReceiver
 intent-filter android:priority=999
 action
 android:name=android.provider.Telephony.SMS_RECEIVED /
 /intent-filter
 /receiver

 But as soon as the message is sent, its received in the default app. How
 can we configure or code our app to send and receive within itself and not
 affect the other text app?

 Basically we want to contain the text within the app, anything initiated
 within the app is only to show up in the app and no other sms app on the
 devices.

 Is this possible? We dont want copies of the text also showing up in the
 users default text app.

 thank you

 Now with that said, if someone sends a actually text from outside the app,
 then it should end up where it normally does for the user.

 Hopefully that makes sense.

 thank you

 It ends up in the catch and returns a
 java.io.FileNotFoundException: http://www.site.com/imgs/inventory/Video
 Game/3_1_Vanellope.jpg

 But if i copy the URL and paste into my browser, it opens the images
 fine.. all images are available, so im sure im doing something wrong.

 Can anyone pin point any possible issues?

 This is all within the original posted code, all ive done is change the

Re: [android-developers] Re: AndroidStudio feedback (vs Eclipse)

2015-01-14 Thread Steve Gabrilowitz
I had the same situation, (free, full, lib) and found the migration pretty
easy. I'm not using flavors, all the common functionality is in the
library units and the free and full each use descendants of the objects in
the library. I simply did an import eclipse project on each of the free
and full (the import process automatically grabs the library and pulls it
in). Import, build, done - I was impressed. Only issue was that doing the
2 imports caused each to be put into a seperate folder (what would
correspond to a workspace in Eclipse). So I just moved the free project
into the same folder as the root of the full and all was good!

 Is this Android Studio or the migration to Android Studio?

 Because with new projects, even months ago, I had no hesitation starting
 them in Android Studio.
 It was the forced migration that was a pain.

 Well... I'm not yet ready to stop my Android work. But it's boring to
 learn AndroidStudio, time consuming. There are so little help on the web.
 And the 'flavor' stuff : a good idea, but really badly implemented in their
 IDE.
 I don't know when/if I will be able to publish updates of my App...

 I have not tried the 'import Eclipse Project' stuff, as I have 3 projects
 (free,full,lib).
 I have stated an AndroidStudio project from scratch, and I plan to
 copy/paste resources code from my existing code.
 From the beginning, I have decided to create flavors, and not wait until a
 free version was ready, to add a full version (add a flavor). So, I am
 learning AndroidStudio new features at the same time as learning
 AndroidStudio use. Not easy at all

Re: [android-developers] Lock Orientation at runtime

2015-01-02 Thread Steve Gabrilowitz
If you can't do it any other way you could make each of your activities
into a library module, then create 2 extensions of each - one with
orientation locked in the manifest and the other not. Now simply choose
which activity to start with your lock orientation setting!
On Jan 2, 2015 9:57 PM, Nathan nathan.d.mel...@gmail.com wrote:

 I wanted to know if it is possible to lock the orientation of an activity
 at runtime.

 I know it is possible:

1. To restrict a particular activity to portrait or landscape by means
of the manifest file.
2. For the user to restrict all activities to stay in the current
orientation by turning of Screen Rotation in their phone or tablet
settings.

 I wondered if it is possible to allow users to choose Lock Orientation
 inside my app, if they so choose, and then act in such a way to enforce it.

 If not possible, the next option might be simply to educate users about
 the global setting as an option.

Re: [android-developers] Database access error causes force close

2014-12-05 Thread Steve Gabrilowitz
You could try putting a try/catch block around the offending statement to

 spot the error.

 Here is the code where it's failing and force closing:

---  CUT HERE  ---

// global - before start of DataBaseHelper class:
private static final String TABLE_GRAINBRANDS = grainbrands;

// much later in DataBaseHelper

ListString grainBrandsList = new ArrayListString();
String selectQuery = SELECT  * FROM  + TABLE_GRAINBRANDS;
String brand;

SQLiteDatabase db = this.getWritableDatabase();
Cursor c = db.rawQuery(selectQuery, null); // This is the line (75)
// that logcat says causes the force close

---  CUT HERE  ---

 Surrounding logcat code:

 ---  CUT HERE  ---

 I/ActivityManager(15152): Start proc com.jdgapps.andgtbrew2 for activity
   com.jdgapps.andgtbrew2/.AndGTbrew2: pid=28296 uid=10327

 I/ActivityManager(15152): Process com.jdgapps.andgtbrew2 (pid 28296) has
 died.

 ---  CUT HERE  ---

 Unfortunately, this error message doesn't tell me much, and while looking
 between tutorials and my code here, I can't see what's wrong with it.

 I tried to check in /data/data/com.jdgapps.andgtbrew2/ to see if gtbrew2.db
 was there, but /data was empty, so I gather it's hidden. Good security,
 normally, but a PITA right now.

 Logcat does not show any of the errors that would be generated if the
 dabase copy (from assets to the above) failed, so it should be there.

 Does anyone see anything that I might have missed?

 Thanks,

 I tried that. The catch statement, which should have logged the error,
 became the new source of the force close. And logcat did not give ANY
 additional data.  :-(

 I also tried deleting the database and re-creating it. It STILL shows up
 as much smaller than the copy in assets, but I'm still assuming Android
 quietly does some kind of compression on it.

 Limited time .

 So I guess it would be a special version with a different package name,

2014-08-08 Thread Steve Gabrilowitz
You can't delete it but you can unpublish it! Almost the same effect
except you can't reuse the package name.

 ¿It is legal to delete the app and to upload it again to start with 0
 installations and 0 rates?

Re: [android-developers] return object or listobject

2014-08-04 Thread Steve Gabrilowitz
How would list.isEmpty() be better than object==null? If you never plan on
returning more than one object then it makes no sense to use a list.
On Aug 4, 2014 11:04 AM, sweety fx fxswe...@gmail.com wrote:

 A method is supposed to return a object when called.

 Which is better to implement for the method:
 1. Is it better to have the method return an object.
 2. Or return ListObject where the single object is added to the array
 list.

 because, we can check for list.isEmpty() which is better than
 object!=null. not sure which one is better.

Re: [android-developers] Is it possible to allow Alpha/Beta testers to test my paid app for free?

2014-07-30 Thread Steve Gabrilowitz
I can verify that it works as I stated as of a few weeks ago, but of course
since this is not officially documented behaviour I guess it is always
subject to change. Seems to me that quite some time ago we had 2 buttons,
refund and cancel but now the cancel button is there only until the status
goes from yellow to green and the refund button doesn't appear until the
status is green.

 Are you sure about that? That doesn't sound like correct behavior at all.

This would be true only if activity A called its finish after starting B.
Otherwise A remains on the backstack and reappears when B finishes.

 Have you overridden onBackPressed in activity B in which case you should
 call this.finish() in B. Your code should look similar to this
 class A : Activity {
  onClick(..) {

 class B : Activity {
  onBackPressed() {
   this.finish(); /* this takes you back to the previous activity on
 stack. You need not do start activity to go to A as it will create new
 activity A and launch it instead of closing B and going to previous A.*/

Re: [android-developers] Is it possible to allow Alpha/Beta testers to test my paid app for free?

What I did was to advise my testers that they would have to pay to install

 I've done in the past with my first paid app like Bhavin said: use
 *com.your.package.test* for beta testing (free of course) and when
 you're ready to launch, disable this APK and upload the same binary as
 *com.your.package*

 reading around it would appear that testers would also have to pay in

 to test my app for me. Is there any way around this, or I have I
 misunderstood? I'm talking about the initial purchase of the app, not in
 app purchases.

 If not, how do others approach this situation? Give the app away on
 email, but lose out on the auto updating facilities of the play store, or
 do you create two apps one for free that is only visible to testers, and
 then the paid app later on launch?

 If I did that, would I need two diff package names for each of the app?

 Thanks
