I have ubuntu 8.10 and adb from sdk not working for me.
I build sdk from source and then it see my phone.
Try to copy adb from:
http://ironphone.ru/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/adb.tar.gz
to your sdk/tools folder. Don't forget to backup old adb file.
If it's not working for you, try to build sdk
