for real-time, interactive use of Animata in conjunction with other programs (on my mac), I use Camtwist (free) to create a video signal from the Animata output window. Then I use that video signal as a video source in another application, allowing me to layer and mix the Animata output like any other video signal. Using Quartz Composer and/or VDMX I am able to send OSC signals to Animata, giving me real-time control over the animations within the same application(s) I am using to mix the video signal. This would also work with any other video mixing software that allows OSC output.
