AP. 27 February 2003. Tens of thousands condemn Bush in biggest anti-war
rally seen in Egypt.

CAIRO -- An estimated 100,000 chanting protesters crammed Cairo's main
stadium Thursday in Egypt's largest demonstration against the U.S.
threats of war against Iraq.

"We came here because we cannot watch our sisters and brothers being
killed in Palestine and about to be killed in Iraq and remain silent,"
said Safeya Mohamed a 20-year-old student from the Suez Canal city of
Ismailia.

Rally protesters began arriving at the stadium early Thursday from
across the country, yelling chants such as "down with America," waving
Iraqi and Palestinian flags and kicking effigies of U.S. President
George W. Bush.

The mass rally was organized by various groups, including the
Islamist-dominated Doctors' Syndicate, and sanctioned by the Egyptian
government, which has deployed large numbers of security forces to past
anti-war protests after concerns that political chaos may break out.

Among the protesters were Sunni Muslim and Coptic Christian leaders, who
held up copies of Islam's holy book, the Quran, and crucifixes signaling
their opposition to a war.

Bishop Pisenti, assistant to Coptic Pope Shenouda III, said Arab leaders
gathering for a summit in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheik Saturday
must put aside any differences "because today, the entire Arab nation is
against attacking Iraq."

When asked about the U.S. president's prediction that toppling the Iraqi
regime will inspire democratic reform in the Arab world, Islamist leader
Omar Azzam said: "If Mr. Bush believes in democracy then he should
listen to the voice of the majority that says no to war."

"He is lusting for oil, he meddles in our affairs under the guise of
human rights and now he is giving us lessons in democracy -- (Bush is)
arrogance incarnate," said 33-year-old teacher Salem Fawzi.
