AP. 27 February 2003. Hundreds of Indians protest possible U.S. attack
on Iraq.

CALCUTTA -- Hundreds of people, from communists to artists, held
protests in two Indian cities Thursday against a possible U.S. attack on
Iraq.

More than 1,000 young communist activists began a 24-hour sit-in outside
a heavily guarded U.S. Information Center and Library in the eastern
city of Calcutta, the capital of West Bengal state.

Waving signs reading "No Blood for Oil," protesters marched through
parts of the city.

"We are protesting to send the United States a message that the youth is
strongly opposed to war against Iraq for a country's selfish interest,"
said Asitanga Ganguly, the general secretary of the Democratic Youth
Federation of India.

The federation is the youth wing of the Communist Party of India
(Marxist), which governs India's West Bengal state.

Also Thursday, hundreds of people joined a march in the southern city of
Bangalore opposing a possible U.S.-led attack on Iraq.

The march was organized by the Bangalore Initiative for Peace, a group
that includes intellectuals, artists and students.

The marchers shouted slogans against U.S. President George Bush.
Academics and artists later made speeches.
