NATO members Poland, German and Denmark inviting
Baltic states to set up missions at joint corps
Mon Apr 29,12:17 PM ET

WARSAW, Poland - A Polish-German-Danish military corps
will invite the three Baltic states to establish
missions at its headquarters, a possible prelude to
NATO membership, Poland's defense minister said
Monday.

Jerzy Szmajdzinski likened the proposal to overtures
Denmark and Germany made to the Poles on military
cooperation before Poland joined NATO along with
Hungary and the Czech Republic 1999.

"The cooperation of Denmark, Germany and Poland ...
was the first time two NATO countries established
equal cooperation" with a non-NATO state, Szmajdzinski
said.

He made the remarks before the start of two days of
talks with defense ministers Rudolf Scharping of
Germany and Svend Age Jensby of Denmark.

On Tuesday, they will by joined by their counterparts
from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, former Soviet
republics whose possible membership in NATO will be
addressed at an alliance summit in Prague later this
year.

The German-Danish-Polish corps, formally headquartered
in the northwestern Polish city of Szczecin, takes
orders from the three participating countries but
operates with NATO on peacekeeping and other missions.
