US ships continue to carry equipment, Patriots arrive
in Turkey

U.S. cargo ships continued to arrive at one of
Turkey's seaports in the southern part of Turkey on
Wednesday, carrying military equipment which will be
used in upgrading Turkish airbases and seaports, while
the first Patriot Missile Systems to protect Turkey in
case of a war also arrived the same day.

Turkey has permitted the U.S. for site preparations at
Turkish airbases and seaports which will be used in a
possible invasion of Iraq.

Turkey's Parliament is expected to vote this week on a
motion to allow up to 62,000 U.S. troops to be
stationed here in the event of an operation. Turkey
fears support for the U.S. could make it vulnerable to
a retaliatory strike by Baghdad.

After the U.S. military cargo ship "Cappella", "Gute"
and "Rozano" Ro-Ro ships also arrived at Turkey's
southern seaport Iskenderun.

While the upgrading of Mersin's Tasucu seaport
accelerates and the finishing date of upgrading the
seaport is foreseen as Thursday, a delegation of
American and Turkish military officials visited
Mersin's Silifke State Hospital.

Meanwhile, U.S. cargo planes continued to arrive at
Adana's Incirlik airbase also on Wednesday. The cargo
planes are reportedly carrying military equipment that
will be used in the site preparations.

Two refuelling planes and a Prowlers plane also landed
at the airbase on Wednesday. Incirlik is still hosting
50 U.S. and British warplanes that performed in
Operation Northern Watch over northern Iraq.

Dutch "Patriot" missiles arrive at Turkish port
A cargo ship docked at Iskenderun port in southern
Turkey on Wednesday and began unloading Dutch Patriot
air defence missiles promised for the defence of
Turkey in the event of war with Iraq.

Large trucks and heavy lifting vehicles marked with
the Dutch flag drove in bright sunshine through the
open front of a roll-on roll-off ship onto Iskenderun
quayside. Turkish military patrolled the harbor, on
the eastern Mediterranean coast, and marshalled
traffic through the harbor.

"These are the Dutch Patriots arriving as per the
arrangement," a Western diplomat said.

The Patriots are the first consignment promised by the
Netherlands to Turkey under a bilateral arrangement.
They could be mounted around military bases or cities.

AWACS air reconnaissance aircraft were due to arrive
under a NATO agreement in the Anatolian city of Konya
later on Wednesday to patrol the skies near the Iraqi
border.
