Subject: [IMF-WB-Protest-Discuss] teargas is not so bad... Date: Tue, 04 Sep 2001 07:48:41 -0000 From: "Rob S" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I went through all of army basic training. Week 2 they stuck us in a sealed room full of it with no masks for five minutes. I was a bit familiar with it after a few demonstrations before this unpleasant experience. but being in that room makes the CS levels you get in open air at a protest seem like taking a hit off of a menthol cigarette. The most important thing to remember is not to panic; most people instinctively run away from it. But that only makes your respiratory system and the chemical agents in the CS work harder. inhale deep breaths slowly and hold it (if you can); it will still burn; but the less concentrated gas you breathe in- the more manageable the effects are. Cloth does act as a poor, but reductive filter when breathing through the mouth- i remember the bandana i used to breathe through in cinci smelled like CS residue for a few days so that means it works. I had my eyes open the whole time i was in the chamber- just don't rub em' that makes it worse. People say it makes it easier on you if you breathe through your nose; but i haven't tried that one. Also, just like in a fire- crouch low to the ground. Teargas is the least of your worrys... Some notes on tactical movement: If the tear gas has been fired, odds are rubber bullets and bean bag projectiles are flying around too. ALWAYS watch where the officers with the shotguns are. most nonlethal projectiles are fired from these- a weapon with a canister or stomach shaped tank on it is also a non lethal weapon. Take note of these people- not all officers in a riot unit or squad carries these; but these are the folks who will be shooting at you- so if you see their muzzle pointing in your direction- then it's time to move fast and seek cover. Also if you are being fired upon in the middle of a street- it is best to move to the sidewalk and run up along the buildings. Not only will any parked cars around provide cover; but if you run away down the center of the street directly centered with the firer's line of sight in a straight line, you're toast. But if he's behind your left and you run along the buildings to your right, he'll have to adjust his aim, and be a very good shot to hit you even without cover. Those projectiles move much slower than an actual bullet; so the time it takes to reach it's target takes much longer. The bean bag shots move slow enough where you can actually see them fly at you. Without a proper lead on a target moving from left to right (lead:where you aim and fire ahead of the target a few feet so the target moves into your shot- which is difficult because you have to take range, FPS, and sometimes wind into account) theres a slim chance you'll get hit if you keep moving. One more thing- if you are fired at from behind the fence- run alongside the fence instead of away from it, same rule as above. Hope y'all watch your own asses. I know i will.
