http://www.cnn.com/2002/US/04/02/ret.norway.us/index.html Norway pledges support in U.S. war on terrorism April 2, 2002 Posted: 3:08 PM EST (2008 GMT) WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Norway strongly supports the United States in its war against terrorism, and will provide F-16 fighter jets to the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan later this year, if needed, its defense minister said Tuesday. "We have been backing the United States and will continue to back the United States. It's very important to us, because there are actually more Norwegians living in the United States than there are in Norway," Defense Minister Kristin Krohn Devold told reporters. Devold made her comments at a joint news conference after meetings with U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, who thanked Norway for supplying special forces to the war in Afghanistan and AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control Systems) surveillance planes to help patrol U.S. skies after the September 11 terrorist attacks. In addition to the war on terrorism, Devold said the two discussed Norway's commitment to the effort to modernize NATO. On a terrorism-related topic, Rumsfeld was asked about the status of Abu Zubaydah, the most senior al Qaeda member captured since the September 11 attacks. He was taken into custody last week in Pakistan. Zubaydah, who the White House said was wounded as he tried to escape capture, is being given "very good medical care," Rumsfeld said, while refusing to divulge the prisoner's whereabouts for security reasons. The defense secretary said Zubaydah's wounds don't appear to be life-threatening. "There is no question but that having an opportunity to visit with him is helpful," Rumsfeld said about plans to interrogate him. Rumsfeld also was asked about the role of Iran in supporting al Qaeda terrorists. "There is no question but that al Qaeda have moved in and found sanctuary in Iran, and there is no question but that al Qaeda have moved into Iran and out of Iran to the south and dispersed to some other countries," Rumsfeld said. "To my knowledge they are not operating out of Iran in the sense that they were out of Afghanistan," he said. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo!
