BRITISH REPORTER'S NATO UNIFORM MAKES HIM TARGET OF FEDERAL
FORCES
MOSCOW, SEPTEMBER 26, RIA NOVOSTI - The British reporter John Scott, killed
in a clash between federal troops and a rebel group in Ingushetia (a North Caucasus
republic adjacent to Chechnya), was wearing a NATO uniform, which made him
visually indistinguishable from a Chechen rebel, Sergei Yastrzhembsky, aide to the
Russian President, revealed to the media Thursday.
According to the presidential aide, two cartridge drums to a machine gun and several
notebooks with comments were found on Scott. "We are sorry about the British
reporter's death," Yastrzhembsky said. Russian authorities have time and again warned
foreign journalists against travelling to the battlefields of the North Caucasus, he
stressed.
The killed British journalist had a Russian visa, but it became invalid by the time he
arrived in Russia, Yastrzhembsky revealed.
