Thanks for the reply. What we have hit is granite ledge, which is non
poundable. I think the boring machine will be needed.

FrANKLYN,

I have a 4 acre planting that has a layer locally called a Hardpackthat
occurs about 12 to 18 inches down.

I used a skid steer with a hydraulic Ram for pounding/driving posts. I
drove 5-6 treated southern pine posts 4 feet down

with little trouble. Beside the End posts/anchors there is another post
every 30 ft or so.

In between the posts I planted 10 to 11 Tall spindle trees all secured to 4
layers of High tensile wire spaced every 2 ft.

This anchoring has been in the ground for 4 years now and is quite stable.

We are inquiring if anyone else has hit unexpected ledge in anchoring a tall

anchor a post in the soil.

One idea we have is to drill a 13/4 inch hole in the ledge and put a 12
foot galv steel fence post in, but it is only good for every other one
because of its strength to bend when you use more than one.

Experience or ideas ?

Thanks,

Re: [apple-crop] ledge in tall spindle planting

2012-05-23 Thread Dan Wilson
Frank,

Ours is a very ledgy site; shale loam, with emphasis on shale. We've been
working with a fencing contractor who resorted to pre-drilling each hole with a
rock drill before pounding in posts (metal or wood). No failed posts, most got
about four feet in.

I'd also be a bit extra concerned about water stress on your site- dwarf root
systems on shallow soils not a good mix.

Good Luck!

Re: [apple-crop] ledge in tall spindle planting

2012-05-23 Thread David Kollas

Frank:
Last week I was looking for info on drivers and diggers and found one
of interest, linked below.
The video shows a driver pounding a pipe into a rock quarry. No
further description. I wrote
the danuser company an email inquiry but have not received a reply.
The Danuser Hammer is
expected to be first available in July or August of this year.
Danuser also has a CRB Rock Auger
that drills 4inch diam holes in Solid and Fracturable Rock. It is
made for skid-steer eqpt.

Mo's suggestion of a quarter stick dynamite would be cheaper if it
works. I assume he drills the

ledge to accommodate the explosive.
