Sorry I didn't see this sooner.
Using historical records from Geneva, NY, we predict Mac bloom at 384
(+/-35) DD(base 43F) from Jan. 1(28 obs). Red Delicious bloom is
predicted to occur at 432 (+/-49) DD (base 43F) from Jan. 1 (16 obs).
Don't know how applicable DD prediction of tree phenology would be
across widely different geographic/climatic regions.
Alan Lakso, in the Hort. Dept. at Geneva, has been working on a
predictive model for bloom (using Mac, I think) that he aims to have
account for the effect, if any, of mid-winter warm periods on apple
phenology in the spring. I don't know where he stands with it at
present.

I am In the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and we are about 1/2" green
tip (or a little further) on Red Delicious. It is supposed to be
quite warm the next couple of days and I am trying to predict when
apple bloom may be i.e. will it be within the next week. Does anyone
have info on using DD to predict bloom?
We are not yet at bloom on peaches, but I expect it to start tommorrow..
