Re: Apple-Crop: degree days and apple bloom prediction
Sorry I didn't see this sooner. Using historical records from Geneva, NY, we predict Mac bloom at 384 (+/-35) DD(base 43F) from Jan. 1(28 obs). Red Delicious bloom is predicted to occur at 432 (+/-49) DD (base 43F) from Jan. 1 (16 obs). Don't know how applicable DD prediction of tree phenology would be across widely different geographic/climatic regions. Alan Lakso, in the Hort. Dept. at Geneva, has been working on a predictive model for bloom (using Mac, I think) that he aims to have account for the effect, if any, of mid-winter warm periods on apple phenology in the spring. I don't know where he stands with it at present. Dave Kain Dept. of Entomology Cornell University NYSAES Geneva, NY 14456 I am In the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and we are about 1/2 green tip (or a little further) on Red Delicious. It is supposed to be quite warm the next couple of days and I am trying to predict when apple bloom may be i.e. will it be within the next week. Does anyone have info on using DD to predict bloom? We are not yet at bloom on peaches, but I expect it to start tommorrow.. Bill Sharp --
RE: Apple-Crop: degree days and apple bloom prediction
Sorry Bill, Degree days on what degree base? Con In Michigan we have used approximately 284 DD42 from March 1 as the start point for king bloom on Macs. This is in our Michigan State University Fruit Management guide E-154, from a chart originally prepared by Phil Schwallier of MSU. This is based on pre-1990 weather data in the Grand Rapids area of Michigan. In recent years we have been getting more DD before March 1so ignoring what happens before Mar 1 is now becoming problematic. So, I generally add on 25 DD42 to the total and use a target of 310 DD42 from January 1 as the start point for king bloom for Macs. Not sure if this works for your area. 1/2 green is approx 205 DD42 from March 1, or 230 DD42 from January 1 with my fudge factor. RE: Apple-Crop: degree days and apple bloom prediction
bill good morning. my orchard is the berkshires of western massachusetts, elavation 1300ft. my past records of 20 years show 18 to 20 days from greentip to full bloom on apples (given varietal differences-i don't grow red delicious) plums bloom about 2 weeks before apples, asian pears about 10 days before, reliance and red haven peaches about 7 days before apples. all of the above bloom has been at the earliest 25 days away (ie. april 24th) to start. is green tip early for you this year (and recent years)? our bloom dates have steadily gotten earlier on average. i've grown apples since 1982, and at this home orchard since 1990. i hope this helps. i don't do alot with degree days opting to observation of the trees directly and comparing with my records. probably some university websites could help with degree days. both UMass Amherst and Cornell have good sites. on a different note would you be up for a brief visit from a couple of fellow apple growers? my partner and i are planning to travel to visit friends in asheville and pittsboro, NC early next week for 12 days or so (bloom really isn't till early may here!). we plan on coming down the blue ridge on the way to asheville. i haven't been in your beautiful country since walking the appalachain trail in 1976. best of luck this year alan surprenant brook farm orchard ashfield, massachusetts Date: Wed, 31 Mar 2010 06:18:36 -0700 From: bsharp1...@yahoo.com Subject: Apple-Crop: degree days and apple bloom prediction To: apple-crop@virtualorchard.net I am In the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and we are about 1/2 green tip (or a little further) on Red Delicious. Heading for a record early budbreak in Quebec. Old record of April 9th established in 1981 will be beaten by about 2-3 days with the help of the temperature in the higher 70's forecasted for the coming days. That's 2-3 WEEKS ahead of our 30 year average for green tip. Of course pruning is not finished and sprayers are not ready. No Easter Holiday up here this year! We hit 15 degrees last Saturday morning and may have gotten some damage. We were at silver tip then on apples and swollen bud on peaches. Cool weather, wet weather since has slowed development.
