In Linux you will probably set up your MTA (sendmail, exim, etc.)
to use your ISP's (Bluegrass) SMTP (smarthost). Best to leave it
like that, although I believe that gmx supports pop-before-smtp,
and smtp auth. I have a gmx account, aber ich kann nur ein Bischen

I subscribed to the Yahoogroups Arachne list, so I think. To: line on the
confirmation message was 77 characters long. I didn't stay online long enough
to get the welcome message, that was the end of my session. I didn't use the
web interface at all, so I didn't have to answer all those questions.

I used gmx.net address instead of [EMAIL PROTECTED] so as to have some
fodder for testing with fetchmail when I set up with Linux. Do I need to use
gmx.net SMTP or can I also use Bluegrass Net SMTP? I noticed some messages to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] CC'ed to the Yahoogroups list.

Actually the To: line was not long enough, though it may have been too long for
Compuserve. Maybe Compuserve truncates the To: line after a certain number of
characters. Bug in Compuserve, and didn't you say Compuserve limited your
inbox to 100 messages? I've exceeded 100 with Bluegrass Net many times, even
exceeded 200.

See, the server has no way of knowing that the shortened ...com@yaho really is
supposed to be [EMAIL PROTECTED] . I believe I've had To: lines even longer than
this on list subscription confirmations, and I was successful sending the
confirmation mini-message.

I believe Majordomo is a software rather than hardware item, thus the Arachne
list server would be in Michael's premises.

In a recent message Michael Polak, the author of Arachne and owner of
the Arachne List said that he would have fixed the unsubscribe problem
with the list if it were easy for him to do so. If it is hard for even
him to fix it, then it might also be a very difficult task for any other
list owner to fix it. Fixing Majordomo might require action on the part
of those who administrate the Majordomo servers. Maybe the problems
cannot be fixed at the list-owner level.

Michael has not described the cause or the nature of the problem.
He just said that the problem is not easy to fix.

Glenn,

I tried to subscribe to the Arachne list on Yahoo groups, but the
confirmation reply got bounced. It seems that the "To:" line is too long.

Why can't the owner of the Majordomo list just be transferred to a new owner?

Goback to Glenn's original message. It describes a second method
for subscribing to [EMAIL PROTECTED] that doesn't involve
giving them any information whatsoever.

It worked almost instantaneously and that was that. You don't have
to tell them a thing to subscribe just to the list.

Ron,

Did you simply send mail to the Subscribe e-dress, or did you go to
Yahoo? I sent mail to the first link Glenn gave -- pretty sure it's the
one under "Subscribe" down there. I was told I'd get an e-mail to
verify subscribe, and I did get an e-mail to verify, and then I stared
getting stuff from the list ...

Wasn't necessary to "join" Yahoo at all.

Do not click the link in the confirmation eMail that gets sent to you.

Just click 'reply' and then 'send'.

By replying-back to the message no questions will be asked.
And no Yahoo ID will need to be signed-up for.

You'll just begin receiving the mailing list messages.

Do they make you try to sign up for a yahoo id first?
I tried signing up for a yahoo id several times a couple of
years ago. They would send me a yahoo id, but when I
entered my yahoo id at the prompt their system alwys rejected
it. When I wrote to tech support to complain they just sent
me a canned response referring me to their useless help pages.
Maybe the yahoos have a system that is designed to work only
with Window$. Another thing I don't like about the yahoos is
that they are associated with lots of spams and porns. For this
reason some ISPs won't even accept emails sent by someone using
a yahoo email address.

As of my last email download, which was a little after 10:00 GMT January 17,
it has already taken months.

I remember the ugly sendmail config file, sendmail.cf, a nightmare to read
through and see what was happening. I never got into qmail. Any other
possibilities, exim maybe?

Michael said he had no more time to continue work on Arachne, so maybe the list
should be switched to other hands? When should I send a subscription request to
yahoogroups?

Re: Fw: arachne list cancelled

2003-01-17 Thread Cristian Burneci
Sendmail has very ugly config files and it is hard enough to configure
it without any help from an automatic configuration tool. In addition to
that, there are this Majordomo config troubles

I wonder if time has come for Michael to try and switch to qmail and its
companion ezmlm (for mailing lists). Both ISPs I use are employing qmail.
It also took me less than two hours to compile and figure out how to
install qmail and to instruct it to masquerade my e-mail address (as you
can see in this e-mail's header). Qmail is more stable and versatile than
sendmail and it is modular (this is why it doesn't require one huge and
cryptic config file, but a bunch of much smaller and simpler ones).

The biggest trouble with Qmail is setting it up to deliver mail to any
domain. (needs some additional software; by default qmail has a very
weird policy to prevent relaying), but it can be done.

My vote is to keep this as a Majordomo list. I don't
understand why the unsubscribe problem can't be fixed.
I have been on other Majordomo lists for years that

can't Michael (or a trusted volunteer) just manually
delete the addresses of the people who have been

Yahoo groups sux. I have in the past had some very bad experiences
with the yahoos. In order to send or read posts in the yahoo groups
they say you have to sign up for a yahoo user ID. It appears that this
is just a ruse. I suspect the yahoos just want to harvest your email
address and sign you up for the opt-in lists of all the spammers they
support. I suspect them of supporting spammers because their main
web page has links to lots of porn sites. Almost all porn sites are
promoted primarily by spammers. The yahoos won't even send you a valid
yahoo user ID. If you complain to them about how your yahoo user ID
doesn't work they will just send you a canned response referring you to
their useless help pages.

I am all in favor of dumping Majordomo, but please don't select yahoo
groups as an alternative. BTW, several people on this list have
reported the same problems as I have about how yahoo groups sux.
