2003-08-14 Thread Bastiaan Edelman, PA3FFZ
Hi Kali,
5 months ago I had the same problem but Glenn offered two
alternatives to hotmail.

XMS did not function very well... myrealbox is OK with Arachne.

So, I installed myrealbox at the neighbours and this is still running.
And... it is free :-)

No way for Arachne... total lock up with switching off the mains as a
remedy. How to explain this to your neighbours?

Is there a way to use Arachne for hotmail?

 The simple answer. no.

 Ever since MicroSoft took-over hotmail.
It now requires wincrap to access it.

See if they might be interested in using http://www.xms.ms/ for eMail.

POP3, SMTP and WebMail all work perfectly with ALL eMail clients
 and ALL web browsers.

The only requirement for doing SMTP is that you first 'login' by doing
POP3 before attempting to do SMTP.

All of this also applies to http://www.myrealbox.com/

Hello Greg, Sam, all:

Almost by definition, email is insecure. If someone gets between you
and hotmail, reading your messages would be trivial.

OTOH, Big Brother has been steadily pouring millions (US $) into
Omnivore, Carnivore, Dragon Net, DragonWare, etc. (see
http://www.epic.org/privacy/carnivore/omnivoreproposal.html among there
many FOIA documents posted on
http://www.epic.org/privacy/carnivore/foia_documents.html) in hopes of
being able to pick a needle (packet stream) out of a hay stack without
compromising others' privacy. The thing that gets me, is that most ISPs
should have the technical know-how and means to comply w/ electronic
wiretap court orders w/o having to install a crappy winblows-based
packet-sniffing setup like the one being thrown together for millions of
(wasted tax payers') dollars...

may this reach you smiling!

That's almost certainly correct. But it isn't the job of Big Brudder to
know this. They rely on the advice of consultants to find out how to
intercept email. And almost certainly those 'consultants will have a
vested interest in developing and selling some expensive software
to their biggest customer, the gummint!

They haven't heard of the old saying: Never ask the barber whether you
need a shave. G

Let's face it. The gummints main job is to spend the taxpayers money,
isn't it?

And by buying expensive software they are at least keeping some software
gurus employed.

Don't worry about Micro$oft any longer. After all, they provided the
Windoze source code to China so in a couple of daze it should be in the
public domain (unless Micro$soft also bought China).

That's not quite true.

Hotmail as webmail works very well on just about any OS and/or web
browser. I just tried and it was usable on links, as well as on lynx.

And there is even pop3-hotmail gateway for linux that lets you use with
just about any email program.

Not that I understand why anyone would want to use that horrible
spam-trap as their primary email address...

BTW, Hotmail is looked upon with great scorn by many sysadmins at
US military bases and aboard ships. Service members are allowed to
use some government computers on their own time for doing private
email correspondence. In many cases they are allowed to access any
web-based email service EXCEPT Hotmail. Hotmail causes problems for
their computers so they say. Using government computers for doing
Hotmail is prohibited on many US military installations and offices
where accessing alternative web-based email services is allowed. Not
all US military installations and offices prohibit Hotmail access by
government computers, but many do. US service members should not use
Hotmail because it is prohibited in many places where they might get
assigned. I don't know if the military services of other countries
have experienced having problems with their systems as a result of
using Hotmail.

Hmmm,
I have an idea! Why don't we BLOCK ALL HOTMAIL ACCOUNTS!!! I mean, I
have one, but rarely use it for anything lately except a spam can,
hehe...since our offender with the crude language and low IQ is posting
from Hotmail, we KNOW he is using at least Windows 3.1, probably even
9X, and MSIE4 or higher! It's VERY difficult to get Hotmail to work
with anything else since MS purchased it a coupla years ago!

Hahaha...just joking now, don't take everything so serious! But this
you can...John Tate, PLEASE, refrain from the lude language, as
mentioned there are younger Arachne fans out there, and even myself do
not particularly relish reading such garbage. Thank you in advance for
