The Windows version actually contains xPDF (a free PDF *viewer* - not
convertor), IMHO the author should have compressed the exe files (I haven't
done this on xpdf090.apm but if you want to upx will decrease the size
rather much on the .exe file, ideal if you don't use it very often.

 Hi Bastian,

have a look at http://www.foolabs.com/xpdf/ ,there is the latest version
of the XPDF package available, including an image extractor (extracts
images to ppm format, which is handled by PV and Paintshop Pro). Works
 fine to me.

So if PDF contains images I ask the author to send me the stuff in a
"normal" format... which they do (9 out of 10 times).
They want to tell or show me something... so it is their job to do this
in a format I can read and in most cases the PDF-file is not the
original text or image... originaly composed in WORD, WP or something
like that. Than I say: "please send me that for I cann't read PDF
containing images" and as stated they very often do.

And if they don't... I will never read their wise words and diagrams.

AFAIK there are two reasons:

1. No images
2. Not all files are converted

Images can be retrieved with another utility - but I don't know of a way to
reuse them in the correct places.

Apart from the lack of images, I have
found the main trouble is that many .pdf files cause problems with
rendition that seems related to filename lengths encountered during

Yeap, put gunzip in your path, I've recompiled the latest version (it was
the latest version when I compiled it anyway g) but haven't had time to
change the xpdf090.apm (or add gunzip.apm - which is better IMHO since some
people have gunzip already).
Anyway the "old" version, actually the same version but my compile is
somewhat smaller due to a new DJGPP version, can be found at
http://www.gzip.org/#exe

There's also PDFTOHTML
http://www.ra.informatik.uni-stuttgart.de/~gosho/pdftohtml/ but I haven't
attemtpted ro compile it for DOS (yet anyway).
