  Hi all, specially Glenn,

Glenn, what is the current situation regarding the Linux version
of Arachne? I'm re-furbing my old arachne4dos website and want to
update a few bits of the info?

From what I have been able to tell
  Linux Arachne is dead.

  As-is Michael's planned devevolpment of Arachne v2.x

And also, the current 1,71 version is downloadable from you
(Glenn that is) and anywhere else?

  Nope not available anywhere else.

I'm now going to be a bit simplistic here maybe!

We all agree that Glenn is doing/has done a great job moving arachne on t
o 1.71 UE under his own steam? YES!

Michael is too busy to develop either arachne DOS or linux? YES?

We know Glenn has 1.73 up and running and we would all like a copy? MOST
 LIKELY YES!?

Could we all gather together a list of known e-mail addresses for Michael
and if everyone of us on the list ask Michael nicely,

Can you authorise Glenn to move on? PLEASE?

Seems to me it's worth a try! If we ALL do it, to ALL the addresses, at m
ore or less the same time?

That is fantastic idea.

Count me in. :))

It might work, as long as he doesn't get too p*ssed off with the flood
of messages.

You must remember that he has other things to do, and this is probably
the reason why Arachne has gone onto the back burner. And remember that
he gets no financial return from the non-professional users of Arachne.

Get him too riled up, and he may say The hell with Arachne and (a) cut
off the A-list and (b) refuse to release anything to anybody.

I suspect he is reading the messages in the A-list, so it may not be
necessary to flood him with mail to get his attention.

Please Michael, are you reading this? If so, what is the answer?

Greg

Greg,

As you may have seen now in one of the massages he sent to the list.
(which had been CCed to his private address)..

Michael is no longer reading the list at-all. :((

Nothing was done with the Linux version of Arachne after the initial
release. It was never improved or updated. It's dead.

Michael has said that he is working on an Arachne version 2.00
which would be entirely new, designed especially for Linux and
perhaps portable to other platforms via what he's called a flowerpot
concept. The status of version 2.00 is unknown. My guess is that it
never got out of the planning stage and is probably also dead. I
don't think Michael has the time to program anymore.

The current version of Arachne for DOS is available only at Glenn's
website.

Yeah ... I like the idea. So now if someone could create the above note
email list pass it on so we can just forward under our own sigs :-)

oh yeah, don't forget the Linux part.

Re: arachne updates

2003-08-11 Thread Cristian Burneci
We all wait for the release of the code under GPL. Then, hopefully
Arachne will get its team of developers.

Arachne for Linux looks very promising, at least the GGI version which
is fairly stable. Unfortunately it can't do anything else then http. The
Linux code makes me very confident there will be a 32bit DJGPP Arachne some
day. It's the only way to break the damned 640 kB barrier and to get
rid of the xSwap mechanism.

From what i've noticed lately, JavaScript is loosing steam. The new
tendency is to use the combination between PHP and SQL in order to generate web
pages dynamicaly. Web designers are now focusing on PHP (server-side)
and tend to forget about JavaScript. CSS are heavily used because they
are pretty comfortable. Unfortunately there are some misguided people
who think that a site entirely written in Flash is the coolest thing on the
web, but these are mostly beginners.

IMO once Arachne GPL'd, the main directions for further developing the code
should be:
1. A better implementation for CSS
2. SSL

Java Script much later

Cristian
