As far as I can tell (though others may correct me - which would be great) 
you are the first to mention historic garden recording here. From an 
English perspective, of course, gardens are something of an obsession, and 
we have a special register of nationally protected heritage just covering 
parks and gardens - see

Is anyone else working on horticultural heritage? How does Arches cope with 
recording assets which are alive... any special data requirements?
