You don't need a load balancer to use a server group. But you loose the ability to automatically distribute the workload evenly across your arservers and automatic failover from user's POV. Failover of Escalation, DSO etc. will work as this is a feature of the server group. You have to tell the half of your users to use server A and the other half to use server B, to distribute the workload.
