ADM: ARSlist Future 2017 update

[Jason Miller]

Just wanted to send a quick update. We made arrangements to keep the
ARSlist up as-is past the original license that is expiring very soon.

Enjoy the T3SMAC conference next week (for those of you going). We'll have
the system up and running for anybody that might want to post updates for
those of us that cannot attend :)

I have been thinking about this the last few days and we have had some
chats. At the moment we are leaning more towards moving ARSlist to an open
source platform. More to come...

List moves to is not a hosted system in the cloud, Misi, who has been 
graciously hosting ARSlist LISTSERV on his server for the last year, will not 
be able to make a software switch until after the T3SMAC conference 
(http://tooltechtrain.com/) in November. If we give Misi a few days to hangout 
in Vegas after the conference, get home, and setup a new mail list system, we 
are looking at possibly a few week outage of the ARSlist while things

That is an interesting option. A few years ago when we had a WWRUG Remedy
server we kicked around the idea of replacing LISTSERV with a Remedy app. I
had a few thoughts regarding UI and structure (I think I even may have
started a mock up). We already had profile form that automated User record
management and self-service registration/password reset.

We put the breaks on that thought when we started to discuss the LOE to
build the app vs. how little ARSlist was being used. Personally I was a
little burnt out from building, supporting. maintaining the WWRUG
conference app (especially during conference week [for example I got what I
needed to install and start to integrate MyIT with our custom app the day I
arrived in Vegas lol!]). Throw in a few personal events and I was not going
to be building the ARSlist app anytime soon.

It would certainly be very cool to have the ARSlist run on Remedy. I think
we still have a licensing challenge even with that approach (we all know
Remedy is not free).

I agree changing to an open source (aka free) solution makes more sense
over keeping it on LISTSERV. Even if we have a successful crowdfunding
campaign, we'll be having this conversation again next year around this
time.

I am working on confirming the renewal price.

Another thought is to setup a GoFundMe (or one of the crowdfunding payment
options) to let the ARSlist community vote with their dollars and see if
the List lives on (at least in its traditional format/technology).

I would be interested to see feedback on the quality of responses on ARSList 
versus the BMC Communities.  I know there are a lot of old timers on the 
ARSList that have a lot of experience.  The volume is definitely not what it 
use to be.  I like the ease of the ARSList and viewing everything via emails.  
As with anything time changes everything.  I'll have to kick the tires some 
more on BMC Communities.  For me personally it is a few extra steps to look at, 
but I'm sure that is easy to overcome.

conference.

feedback. At heart I know none of us want to see the ARSlist go, it has been 
here for us for many years. Shutting it down is not something to be taken

Thank you for maintaining the ARSlist!



I don’t know if this will help, but I once wrote an ARS replacement for the 
ARSlist.

It’s was built on ARS 5 or 6, so I’ll volunteer to do the upgrade/rewrite.



If you have a ‘spare’ AR Server, this could be a ‘no additional cost’ solution.

Note that all subscribers will have Public (no-cost) licenses – but the 
Submitter field will need to be locked.

Of course, this would have all the Use Cases covered.



I must admit that I dislike “… the idea of shutting down the List based on … 
feelings”

AND the difficulty I have with the BMC Communities interface.

Transferring to, GNU Mailman should not be that tough I think. And in addition 
to that we need to put some archive search capabilities in place (swish-e?). So 
all in all there will be some hours needed to get this going.

I am happy to continue hosting the ARSList on my server, but I think we need to 
go to an open source solution.

finding information here.  Just seems there are more people actively floating
