I think we should tell the President that he has been doggedly defending the river-linking concept although this is far from his area of experience. Let's tell him pointblanc that this is a travesty of scientific temper and ethics.

Well, friends, the President is back centre stage, even as Parliamentary Standing Committee (PSC) debates
go on, he again sees it as the solution to all problems, by
correcting the mistakes of nature or of God.

Friends,
# Not only is it ILR to the fore once again, but also about permitting more testing of drugs on animals (which will promote pharmaceutical research that benefits MNCs but not poor people, thanks to WTO). # For floods in Bihar and Assam (and equally in Mumbai or Gujarat), Dr.Kalam has advocated ILR! How can a scientist/engineer overlook the simple argument that flood in Ganga and B'putra that rages at 50,000 and 60,000 cumecs cannot be relieved by a canal that conducts away a mere 1,500 or 2,000 cumecs? Or not understand that the expressways and rail embankments (and also canals) are obstacles to the natural drainage of the land and cause disaster due to flood water NOT flowing away? The answer to those questions is the blind, unscientific faith that our science education in schools gives to children, that S&T can solve all problems, without understanding that S&T causes its own set of problems that are often worse that the problem that they are meant to solve. The thermodynamic law of entropy needs practical interpretation into other fields, ... # In his Independence Day speech that entirely focussed on science and technology aspects, Dr.Kalam said, " ... rainfall and floods are annual features in many parts of the country." We need to thank God that they are annual features. We NEED rainfall and we NEED flood, and that too annually! But what we do NOT need and do NOT want is the DISASTER due to floods. Disaster due to flood is caused or accentuated by interference of man-made structures like river embankments (or road embankments and rail embankments without thought to adequate cross-drainage) with the natural drainage of the land. Proponents of our so-called "modern" methods of blind application of technology argue that if "x" quantity of something is good, then "1000x" of that same thing is 1,000 times as good. They fail to see that if the ill effect of "x" is "y", the ill effect of "1000x" mostly cannot be accurately assessed (especially when human and other intangible factors come into play) and is often more than "1000y" or sometimes less. This is a typical problem in non-linearity. # In the context of road and rail embankments that do not have adequate cross-drainage (noting that adequate cross-drainage affects the financial viability of the project) , I am reproducing below, a very interesting bit of news that Shri Sanjay M.G. of NAPM sent to me regarding the Mumbai floods. ""Western Express highway from Mumbai to Ahmedabad is proved to be blockade to the natural water flow, and caused heavy flooding in nearby villages. 55 flyovers in Mumbai caused obstacle to the drainage. Our famous Bal Thackeray of ShivSena who inaugurated Western Express highway in the past and laid the foundation stone of Bandra Worli sea link bridge in Mumbai faced water flooding in his posh house upto first floor. No security could stop this water. No so-called brave and dashing Shiv Sainiks came to rescue their boss. Finaly the nearby fisher people who were displaced due to Bandra Worli sea link came with boats and he was taken through the boat over the Western Express highway which had got converted into a lake!"" # Many of the vocal proponents of modern technology have little respect for life (plant, animal or human) and are interested in developing anti-life, anti-planet technologies like nuclear weapons and their delivery systems. They dream of populating Mars with humans while increasing millions of humans on Earth are getting a raw deal that worsens by the day. They dream of making Mumbai into a Shanghai or Bangalore into a Singapore and say nothing of 90,000 slum dwellings demolished in Mumbai. They countenance the export of foodgrains (at a profit to build up a balance of FE) and deny that people starve in India - those foolish people are used to eating mango kernels, according to Mr.Patnaik, CM of Orissa. They want to make India shine while Bharat goes down the sewers.
Jai Hind!!

Title : 58 Years of Independence- 'A Wonder that is India'
(Posted by IDC Editor On 14 August, 2005)

Article :
The Spirit of Freedom is going to be celebrated once again today. Once again in synchrony our hands will rise to Salute the Champions of Freedom Struggle who brought us Independence from the British rule. There is a generation in India in whom, the spirit of independence and patriotism is visible in their respect and participation in the flag hoisting ceremony. There is also a Generation, who celebrate the Spirit of Patriotism in a very different way. Patriotism to them means 'work' towards making India the best in all fields. One can see the brightness in every Indian's eyes and a sense of pride, irrespective of age, caste, creed, gender on hearing the song:

'Jahaan daal-daal par,
sone kii chidiyaa karati hai baseraa
vo bhaarat desh hai meraa

jahaan satya, ahinsaa aur dharm kaa
pag-pag lagataa Deraa
vo bhaarat desh hai meraa

…………….
……………….
alabelon ki is dharati ke
tyohaar bhi hai alabele
kahin deevaali ki jagamag hai
kahin hain holi ke mele
jahaan raag rang aur hansii khushi kaa
chaaro aur hai gheraa
vo bhaarat desh hai meraa

……………….
……………….
jahaan daal-daal par,
sone kii chidiyaa karati hai baseraa
vo bhaarat desh hai meraa….'

Years ago A.L.Basham, a renowned historian had written a historical version titled: 'A Wonder that was India'. Taking the lines with a twist let’s try to celebrate A Wonder that India is!

Unity in diversity; culture and simplicity, yet grandeur and celebration; development and progress in multi-spheres, India has emerged as a powerful and significant nation in the world today. Its role in world politics and democratic initiatives in nations has been widely appreciated and respected. As one of the most celebrated nations of Asia, India has stood by the neighboring nations in the times of turmoil and adversity and has been acknowledged as a strong pillar of strength and support.

Our achievements in the field of Science and Technology, Sports, Economy, Entertainment, etc tell a long story of struggle, creativity, knowledge and recognition.

A sense of pride emerges at what we achieved, but there is remise to sadness and bitterness when the horrifying scenes of Tsunami, the floods in Gujarat and Mumbai; violence in Kashmir and the Northeast, come to mind. If natural calamities have taken scores of lives and left the land and people in shatters, the human force, has not been any kind to life and environment. Sarsika Tigers, water crisis in states, terrorism and violence, crime and corruption have given us reasons to wonder if we are moving towards development and making progress in the 'right direction'. Are we in true spirits Independent? Can every common man/woman live a life of peace and freedom from corruption, violence, poverty and disease? No!!! We still have to set our goals and achieve a lot on these scales. Are we ready for making a better future for India or we plan to stay happy and celebrate the shallow success and glories.

Starting from this week, we at www.IndiaDemocracy.com present to you a series of articles on India's progress - achievements and failures; recognitions and celebrations, pleasant and unpleasant incidents and happenings in varied fields - science and technology, defense, economy, education, rural-urban development, environment, human rights, sports, politics and international relations. We also would like you to contribute to the knowledge compilation on our Wonderful Country - India. Lets learn from our past achievements and tribulations - a lesson on how we can keep every Indian proud of his/her nation.

After all 'Bharat humko Jaan Se Pyaara hai, Gulisita humara hai'! Our India is like a bouquet of lovely, colourful flowers, which we need to protect from fading and scattering away to storms of corruption, violence and disharmony.

This Independence Day lets vow to celebrate peace and freedom in its true spirit.

Jai Hind!

Dear Himanshu,
I do not think Dr.Kalam needs a speech writer, being the author and poet that he is said to be. However, I have my reservations on the capability of his advisors ...

yes, and it is amazing that his speech writer or advisors did not remind him
that the if river links were to have been implemented, the situation would
have gone worse in the flooded states he mentioned in his speech. For, the
flooded central gujarat was to get more water from the south Gujarat (Paar
Tapi Narmada link) and the Krishna basin (main cause of floods in rural
Maharashtra, Karnataka and AP) was to get MORE water from other basins.....

Amazing lack of information and understanding of hydrology.
