I started asterisk like so:
/usr/sbin/asterisk -gc
Looks like Asterisk wasn't started as a daemon. Just run
/usr/sbin/asterisk. Then to connect to asterisk run

to start daemon type:
safe_asterisk
to start console type:
asterisk -vvvr
(notice the r at the end)
Note you don't really need that many v's just more for more verbosity
