Come today Dec 25, asterisk has stopped responding. I have done the
usual, stop and restart Asterisk, reboot the machine, even upgraded
asterisk to 1.4.23-rc3. All with the same results.

Sounds like a DNS problem to me. If Asterisk can't get
DNS server rebooted. Everything is back online now.
What threw me was that one of the sip provider registries is by ip
address and all the internal sip and ata's are by ip. That should have
bypassed the DNS.

Chances are you have a DNS problem. Asterisk is trying to look up a
hostname and it is not getting a response.

Asterisk still does things like use DNS SRV records unless turned off,
it also tries to do a DNS lookup for all IP addresses on the system.
Update your hosts file and see if that helps.
