Hi, My name is Francisco from México. Here, in my work we have a very very old panasonic PBX(12 years old). We are growing and we need to increase our external lines(from 3 to 4) and our internal lines(from 6 to 10). Besides we need voice mail and voice menu too. We asked for a quote to our panasonic dealer. The whole thing cost about 4,500 dollars. My boss just saw a thing called Asterisk this morning looking for options in Google. He asked my to investigate what this thing called Asterisk is and if we could save some money using it instead of the panasonic solution. So, here I am. I have some experience as linux sysadmin(we have 1 oracle linux server and 1 linux print server) nevertheless I don´t have any idea where and how to start this evaluation? Re: [asterisk-users] 3rd party app store
What could we do to make the AsteriskExchange more effective? Rod, I'm not involved with Digium or even Asterisk on a daily basis so I don't know you, I also don't know your intentions but taking you at face value and answering your questions - I suggest you listen to the phone call and understand the reason why it was essential that Digium provide a central transaction point (re-use of Digium code and licensing server). Feel free to give me a call if you have any questions. Cheers, Dean -Original Message- From: asterisk-users-boun...@lists.digium.com [mailto:asterisk-users- boun...@lists.digium.com] On Behalf Of Rod Montgomery Sent: Monday, 20 September 2010 2:44 PM To: Asterisk Users Mailing List - Non-Commercial Discussion Subject: Re: [asterisk-users] 3rd party app store That Apple App Store really gets imaginations going, doesn't it? Wouldn't it be great to just publish an AGI script and see even 1% of the Asterisk installed base buy it for the low, low price of $49? Yes, that would be great. But one of the significant components of the moneymaking App Store is platform control. Apple's is the sole legitimate App Store for their platform. Digium gave that sort of control away with the source code to Asterisk. And really, who wants Digium to play middleman in their transaction? We watched with interest when our friends at RedHat launched the RedHat Exchange (RHX). After three years, VP Mike Evans said, We no longer believe that it is productive for Red Hat to try and front end the sale of third-party open source products. It's more effective for them to line up in sales channels with our partners. Source: URL:http://www.linuxplanet.com/linuxplanet/reports/6975/1/ In short, what open source-based ISVs want is not a virtual storefront, but exposure to new customers through existing sales channels and partners. That's why we created AsteriskExchange.com. AsteriskExchange.com provides free listings for free products and services, and paid listings for paid products and services. Digium has already consolidated many of its partnership types into the site, to cross-pollinate them and simplify the programs. The site receives roughly 1/10 the traffic of Asterisk.org and is growing. There's a difference in the visitor as well -- Asterisk newcomers visit Asterisk.org; Asterisk users looking for complementary products and services visit AsteriskExchange.com. Yes, there are fees associated with the AsteriskExchange. You've seen what happens on voip-info and other sites when the barrier is too low. AsteriskExchange is a business project that must earn enough to justify its development and tending. That said, please do get in touch with me if the listing fee is preventing you from joining. We aim to encourage innovative Asterisk applications, even the ones that haven't yet found commercial success. Could we do a better job at getting the word out? Yes, definitely. But we're also cautious about using Asterisk.org and such to promote things like AsteriskExchange. (Also a good reason to discuss this on asterisk-users rather than move it to -biz.) Is it a big deal to see commercial messages on Asterisk.org? We created AsteriskExchange.com as a separate website, but we could just fold it into the project site to raise its visibility and traffic. What waves (good and bad) might this create? What could we do to make the AsteriskExchange more effective? I recently came across this email that I wrote in May 2008 .. http://lists.digium.com/pipermail/asterisk-users/2008-May/210887.html It's such a shame that Digium manhandled the project away from the community only to then bury it and not allow it to proceed. I really wonder when I look at the Apple iphone development community as to where the 3rd party Asterisk development community could have been if Digium didn't kill this project. (for those of you not involved in Asterisk back in 2208 here is the audio of that conference call. http://recordings.talkshoe.com/TC-22622/TS-109845.mp3?dl=1 ) Regards, Dean Collins Cognation Inc d...@cognation.net +1-212-203-4357 New York +61-2-9016-5642 (Sydney in-dial). +44-20-3129-6001 (London in-dial). asterisk-users] FW: Asterisk 3rd party developed commercial software sales licensing platform Dean Collins Dean at cognation.net Mon May 5 06:24:48 CDT 2008 * Previous message: [asterisk-users] MeetMeAdmin() working problem * Next message: [asterisk-users] FW: Asterisk 3rd party developed commercial software sales licensing platform * Messages sorted by: [ date ] [ thread ] [ subject ] [ author ] Hi Randy, As discussed on Friday the 9th of May I would like to host this weeks Voip Users Conference Call. The purpose of this call is to discuss the community's feelings about an Asterisk 3rd party developed commercial software sales licensing platform. The plan is that some form of documented published schema be implemented that will allow for 3rd party software developers to sell their software applications using a common licensing model similar to the way G729 licenses are sold by Digium. Basically this discussion came about for a 3rd party ecosystem question a few weeks ago when Cory Andrews from VoIP supply was on the Voip-Users conference call. I asked the question - how much of VoIP Supply revenue is product hardware versus applications - he said we don't sell any services such as ITSP hosted Asterisk so I replied that wasn't what I was thinking of and gave the example of Snap Dialer which is a low cost (I paid $20 for it) application which allows me to dial names from Outlook. He said they didn't sell any applications like this at all but would consider selling them if this was an opportunity presented to him. I then talked about some of the consulting I did for Salesforce.com and how they have built an entire ecosystem of third party applications all built by other people apart from salesforce.com but utilizing the documented API's and application security /licensing etc. My comments were that although Asterisk should always remain a free open source application that developers need to eat and pay rent as well. If there was some common marketplace that developers could sell small - low cost third party applications to the Asterisk community that Digium had some type of overview/management control over who listed etc that this would deliver a stream of revenue that would encourage further application development. The question I then posed to the group was if anyone knew how Digium managed the sale and licensing of the G729 codes. And if this was an open published standard that could it be used as the basis for the Asterisk ecosystem license model. Now I know it's not perfect and can be hacked but everything can be hacked. The idea is to build apps cheap enough that it's not worth the effort of hacking. If anyone has some alternative suggestions on how apps should be licensed we'd like to hear them this Friday. I know there were discussions in the early days of the Mexuar launch about how they could license a single channel of the Mexuar Corraleta application rather than the entire server license for $2000. The issue always came down to how we could license it to 1/ a single channel license. 2/ tied to a single machine and not transferable (currently the Mexuar license is hard coded in the application to the servers IP address). I know for me personally although I have donated to numerous bounty requests (I even tried to get one developed for video conferencing a few years ago that was around the $10,000 range) I haven't seen the ongoing continual development that would benefit the Asterisk community. * I personally would be more than happy to pay for 'the next generation of FOP', it was a great application when launched but there is a lot more it could be offering. * I'd also like to implement a far smarter 'user dashboard' similar to what Druid are developing. * Now I no longer work for Mexuar and don't have access to it anymore I'd also like to pay for a single channel Mexuar license rather than using 'lesser quality' experiences by other solutions. * Drawing on my own now defunct project - is the Asterisk user community now ready for centrally provided services such as the 'off-deck processing' like the Tellme Speech Recognition Service http

[asterisk-users] Microsoft Response Point Voip server discontinued
Interesting announcement today; http://www.crn.com.au/News/174872,microsoft-response-point-voip-gets-a-d irt-nap.aspx Microsoft this week revealed its intention to discontinue its Response Point, its small business VoIP system for companies with up to 50 employees. While not unexpected, the move is significant because Response Point was once a promising product in which Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates took a particular interest. After taking a good look at the Microsoft Response Point offering and the needs of small businesses, we've decided to discontinue the sale, support, and development of the Response Point phone system for small businesses, effective August 31, 2010 Anyone got any thoughts about using OCS in smaller than 50 users? Shows the naysayers who suggested 3com/MS voip was better because they had big company support compared to the small asterisk vendors. But hey, RTP certainly supports stereo streams, right? I don't know if any of the used codecs do. Kinda lame of course that it would only work over softphones. Viable solution? 2010/1/13 Martin Ravell martin.rav...@rave-tech.com.au: General consensust is that in order to use my PVR-350 I'd need to use PCI Passthrough. Support for PCI Passthrough is via a capability known as DV-t (at least on Intel based systems). The boards that I have been looking at (Gigabyte) do not seem to have this enabled. I have sent an inquiry off to Gigabyte to confirm this and will post any response back to this list. I've just changed my motherboard in my old Core 2 based system to a Gigabyte motherboard. The new motherboard is a Gigabyte EQ45M-S2 with Intel Q45 (VT-D capable) chipset. It doesn't say anything about VT-D anywhere, but if you click Ctrl+F1 in the BIOS, some advanced settings will get activated, including VT-D :-D I've tested it yesterday with a PVR-500 card and passthrough worked perfectly! So if your Gigabyte motherboard uses a VT-D capable chipset, there'll be a good chance that you can activate it with Ctrl+F1 in the BIOS. A nice rugged little phone with great sound quality and some good features. We use a managed switch to create seamless wifi coverage over all of our AP's. Provisioning the phone is pretty easy, but no web browser if you were planning on using the phone to travel with, some hotels require login for internet access. Not related to asterisk: but I figured someone here would have used them before? Has anyone tried http://www.wcell.com/ab/ZnJpZW5kLzEwNjI= yet? Looks like they have a voip app for your mobile handset sending voice calls out over your data service or wifi for 1c per minute calls both in the USA and internationally. Hi guys, I'd like to add a LIVE SUPPORT function to my website. When a person visiting my website has a question they hot the button to cause a text popup chat to occur. Anyone know of an open source solution? I know there are plenty of commercial hosted options available for a monthly fee but seems like such a simple requirement that something has to be available (especially as I'm only looking for one support client and no need to round robin or multiple agent support or agent cut and paste functions etc). Came across this today http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/03/09/y-combinators-voxli-targets-gamers- with-browser-based-group-voice-chat/ Yet another opportunity Asterisk http://www.digium.com/ / Mexuar http://www.mexuar.com/ / PhoneFromHere http://www.phonefromhere.com/ / (insert the other multiple versions here) have missed out on. Lol - and not from lack of trying on my part as you can see here over 2 years ago http://deancollinsblog.blogspot.com/2007/04/voipify-your-website.html) I know people in the asterisk community keep thinking asterisk is a phone system but it's not - it's a voice server with just as many opportunities outside of the regular phone 'network' as there are inside. Yes some people like Jay Phillips with the Adhearsion Ruby platform and Thomas Howe with his multitude of API mashups have proven that voice is just one of many channels, time for the rest of you to stop thinking it ends with the phone on your desk. Re: [asterisk-users] $20 Bounty
Ok guys I have to jump in here. Seems some of you took affront to my $20 paypal bounty. Not sure how long some of you have been around here but the history behind the Weather app on the Trixbox (or Asterisk @ home as it used to be known back then) was that my wife used to always ask me what the weather was like outside because our NY apartment had double glazed floor to ceiling windows you couldn't always judge what the temperature was like. About the same time I was learning that Asterisk had text to speech functionality. Wanting to encourage the community to use this text to speech functionality more I posted a bounty to see if someone could get the weather report read to me on my asterisk server. (sadly I think there is still a lack of text to speech apps for Asterisk). I don't remember the original amount of the bounty (or who it was paid to) but I think it was about $40 to $50 or something like that. It was a super simple app 'dial *68 a ftp session would download the flat text file from the national weather service for my preprogrammed zip code and it would initiate a text to speech event. It was pure simplicity and perfect. Once it was posted to the community I don't know how many people have installed it but I've seen hundreds of variations and install guides since then. Every person that has ever come to my office who I've said hey check out this technology called Asterisk one of the functions I demonstrate along with voicemail to email and FOP conference rooms is the weather call How many of those people have gone out and installed asterisk I don't know but the point being it was a cool way to demonstrate advance apps rather than just plain old dial tone. Sorry some of you took affront to my $20 bounty and the current cost of your overpriced coffees. But my concept was maybe this would be a good way we could demonstrate Asterisk integration to the Tropo community. Guess not. Two of the ship's owners were there, watching this man, hoping he would know what to do. After looking things over, the old man reached into his bag and pulled out a small hammer. He gently tapped something. Instantly, the engine lurched into life. He carefully put his hammer away. The engine was fixed! From: Dean Collins Sent: Sunday, 4 May 2008 3:45 PM Subject: Asterisk 3rd party developed commercial software sales licensing platform Hi Randy, As discussed on Friday the 9th of May I would like to host the Voip Users Conference Call. * Drawing on my own now defunct project - is the Asterisk user community now ready for centrally provided services such as the 'off-deck processing' like the Tellme Speech Recognition Service http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/view/Tellme . As demonstrated by Amazon EC2 / S3 web services I'm a huge fan of cloud computing off-deck processing, Should these style services also be able to take advantage of an Asterisk 3rd party ecosystem licensing model
[asterisk-users] Amazon Flexible Payment System - micropayments finally cracked?
First posted at: http://deancollinsblog.blogspot.com/2009/02/amazon-flexible-payment-syst em.html Amazon have just announced they are finally opening up their API's to their credit card processing platform https://payments-sandbox.amazon.com/sdui/sdui/business?sn=devfps/o So does this mean that micropayments have finally been cracked? It certainly helps out users because you can easily process a transaction without entering in credit card details (it uses the credit card details you have stored on your Amazon account) and for content providers the transaction fees are finally reasonable to low cost content access. For Transactions = $10: 1.5% + $0.01 for Amazon Payments balance transfers 2.0% + $0.05 for bank account debits 2.9% + $0.30 for credit card transactions. More importantly For Transactions $10: 1.5% + $0.01 for Amazon Payments balance transfers 2.0% + $0.05 for bank account debits 5.0% + $0.05 for credit card So lets say you want to sell a 24 hour access pass to your cartoon library content for 20c, that's a pretty reasonable charge for the consumer. Up until now this transaction would not have been possible as the access fees would have been eaten up in transaction costs. But using the Amazon FPS your fees would be ($0.20 x 5%) + $0.05= $0.06 This means the content provider would receive $0.14 for selling this 24 hour limited access license. I don't know about you but that's probably way more than what they would have made in click throughs or display advertising. There are some issues in that it requires a USA based credit card for content providers to collect money (hopefully this is a temporary issue for offshore web content providers) but it doesn't look like there are any requirements for incorporation in the USA or IRS tax collection issues. Re: [asterisk-users] Packet8 hacked
Service Alerts/Updates 1/23/2009 2:00am PST: Due to a global DNS (name server) issue with register.com, Packet8 servers and services became unreachable for customers using certain ISPs including ATT, Cox, and Verizon while customers on other ISPs such as Comcast and Level3 were impacted very briefly due to quick DNS update recovery. As of 1:30am PST our tests show that all DNS servers of the known impacted ISPs have been updated correctly, and Packet8 customers on these networks should be able to reach our services. If you experience any issue using your Packet8 service or reaching the Packet8 website, please reboot your network (by rebooting the DSL/Cable modem, router, Packet8 phones and computers) to clear any cache information. Unfortuately for some reason even though I rebooted my server timewarner didn't update etc, problem fixed itself in the morning. Paul Charles Leddy - on - The Asterisk Free Software Telephone System Please join us Thursday October 23 for a demonstration and overview of Asterisk, a Free Software implementation of a telephone switch. What is a switch? Well, it's the essential core of a phone company. It's also what lets you dial 42 on your phone at work and be connected to the person who knows everything. Wait, that's you? Paul Charles Leddy will be guiding us through a technical overview of how Asterisk works, rather than an overview of how to use it. This talk will be of interest to anyone interested in how a PBX works, as well as those interested in building their own Asterisk PBX. We'll start with a look at the various things Asterisk does, and work our way through setting up extensions, VoIP, SIP, IAX, and call routing. The machine is barely used but it does have some crucial programs i need to run in windows so reformating or dual booting is not an option. Its basically a iax2 connection to my voip provider and a sip connection to my phone. It does work well, but the calls especially the voicemail are all garbarled alot. Its definetly not the provider or internet connection because i use this provider for many clients asterisk setups and i also even setup a temp. asterisk setup on this very pc to test to make sure it was infact vmware causing the problem. I upgraded from vmware player to the latest vmware workstation hoping that would fix the problem since its a better system but it hasnt. I also installed and compiled the vmware tools when i installed workstation version. Is this a known issue with vmware? Is there a way to correct the issue either on the windows/vmware side or on the asterisk/linux side? Re: [asterisk-users] Cisco acquires Jabber
No I know they just bought the company and not the protocol basically they bought engineering bums on seats. http://deancollinsblog.blogspot.com/2008/09/cisco-acquires-jabber.html Cisco obviously didn't buy jabber.com engineers to implement a Cisco IM platform for their retail clients and that they must have something much bigger in mind. You could possible see different Cisco devices communicating with each other (or even using an api to communicate with other manufacturers devices) eg, you might have an XMPP api to 'discover' appliance functionality or to communicate status updates.
