It's in the process of landing into Unstable. RC1 packages (and soon release
packages) for Sarge are availble, see http://xorcom-rapid.berlios.de/ :

  deb http://rapid.dotsrc.org/ experimental/
  deb-src http://rapid.dotsrc.org/ experimental/

I took the debian unstable source for 1.2 and easily built packages for
debian stable. Here is what I have built in order
to install asterisk 1.2 on a standard debian stable sarge box:

asterisk
libpri
speex
zaptel

The only change I made to the source was reducing adduser version
dependency to match that of installed sarge version. I did that because
I could not find rationale for that dependency and I like to minimize
modifications to systems running stable version of debian distro.

Is there any interest? Should I create a project at sourceforge or
elsewhere and make these available for download?

It does not include several important things. It does not include a SIP
jitter buffer. It does not include the ability to use Zaptel for timing
of the RTP audio. It does not include VAD/CND support. As far as I
know it also does not have the patch to make the new IAX2 jitterbuffer
work correctly when connecting to a 1.0.x server.

I took the debian testing source for rc2 and easily built packages for
debian stable. I imagine this release will appear in the debian archives
soon and I can do the same with it. Here is what I have built in order
to upgrade a standard debian stable sarge box:

asterisk
libpri
speex
zaptel

Speeex upgrade was probably not needed but I did it just in case. There
are possibly some other packages that I might update. I have been
running debian for years and my approach with updates/additions to
stable is to minimize number of packages changed.

I added one line to /etc/apt/sources.list, installed and it's been
running since then. 2 days 9 hours since my last config change and
restart with a console open since then. No problems so far.

We are proud to announce that Asterisk 1.2.0 has been released!
