Re: [asterisk-users] WIFI phones on asterisk
Andrew, Could you explain what problems do you have with Hitachi 5000?. We have carried out extensive tests with Hitachi 5000 at customer location who is planning to install more than 120 wifi phones. It is a mining company at 4200 mts altitude, covering the mining camp, an small village and the road within. Test were coverage, roaming, battery life, easy to use and Nortel-Asterisk integration. We had good success. Radios were Proxim 4000 and 700. For us is very important if you point out a problem. Are we missing something?. You are very unlikely, IMO, *to* find anything: doing a *proper* belt clip, that can deal with the massive variations in belt sizes and thicknesses, and having a rugged enough primary housing to attach it to, are both major problems which militate against permanently mounted clips -- at least at this point in the lifecycle of Wiphones. I'm using 7920 with chan_skinny (from 1.4branch), it working quite well I reported some chan_skinny bugs in bugtracker and I can confirm, that are solved very quickly :-) Is true, that chan_skinny have less features that chan_sccp, but more important for me is active development/maintenance we also use Nokia E70 (with latest firmware that solve issues especially with low bitrate codecs), so I think, that these combo phones have great perspective and excelent price/usability ratio ;-) PJ Andrew Joakimsen wrote: Martin: I had seen your other post and sent you a message off-list, but I never got a response. But every single WiFi phone I've tried has not gotten anywhere close to that. When playing with these devices they are about 90% reliable, but for some odd reason, moment I actually go to use it for a real call, something goes wrong; the phone freezes or the network disconnects or it says its connected but nothing happens when you try to place a call or the call is setup but there is no audio, etc, etc, etc.. I just sort of figured that Nokia would have gotten this one right. Is there any chance you did not do this testing with the latest firmware? I had heard that it really improves the SIP. What is the potential market for a USD 200-300 WiFi SIP or IAX phone that is known to be reliable. I haven't tested that many handsets, but the Linksys, Pirelli, D-Link, 3Com, Neuf Twin, and who knows how many others are all made by the same ODM so I don't think any of the variations might be any better. There's a Samsung phone that was announced a while back but I can't find anything of it, same for some Senao models and their site didn't load the VoIP wifi page (404 error) months ago and is the same today. [Asterisk-Users] WiFi phones and WDS (Wireless Distribution System)
I'm about to start working with WiFi phones on my Asterisk installations. Can anyone tell me if they are using WiFi phones on wireless network that is extended with WDS and how well the phone handles jumping from access point to access point while on a call? Do any WiFi phones support WPA encryption or are they all still under the impression they are only being used on public hot spots? Thanks! Re: [Asterisk-Users] WiFi phones and WDS (Wireless Distribution System)
There are a number of phones that support WPA, including the UTStarcom F1000G and F3000, and the Linksys WIP300 and WIP330, although current availability on these products is scarce. I know a couple of integrators that are having good success on WIFI deployments using the D-Link DWS-1008 (8 port Wireless Switch with PoE) and the corresponding DWL-8220AP Access points. In this scenario, administration of the AP's is handled through a central point on the switch. Here are a few specs on the switch. The D-Link MobileLAN solution is powered by Trapeze Networks and executes Trapeze Networks' Mobility System Software (MSS), which maintains the intelligence of the MobileLAN system. In addition to managing users' identities as they roam, the DWS-1008 configures and controls all aspects of the complementing DWL-8220AP Wireless Switch Dualband Access Points. Product Features: a.. Powered by Trapeze NetworksT Mobility System b.. Provides Central Management for WLAN Infrastructure c.. Automatically Configures All Attached DWL-8220APs AAA Authentication Offloading Capability The MobileLAN DWS-1008 supports Administration, Authorization, and Authentication (AAA) policies to ensure maximum security. Rather than checking the identity of a connecting user from the switch's local database, user authentication policies can be sent back to an AAA server for complete verification. This offloading capability ensures that the WLAN will not overload when clients are simultaneously connecting to the network. User-Based Authentication Services This wireless switch delivers Identity-based Networking, which provides user-based services such as virtual private group membership, personal firewall filters, time-of-day/day-of-week access, encryption type, authentication, usage tracking, location tracking, and associated network statistics. Authorizations stay with users wherever they roam because all deployed DWS-1008s share stored information, ensuring secure access and connectivity to the right services. Easy Deployment The DWS-1008 includes eight 10/100 Mbps ports with integrated PoE to enable network connectivity to any connected DWL-8220AP. It is designed for distributed deployments in the wiring closet or small or medium offices. It can support up to six directly connected DWL-8220APs and up to six more DWL-8220APs connected indirectly. Maximum Performance With Load Balancing Capabilities The DWS-1008 performs Layer 2 forwarding and also comes with extensive Layer 3-4 and identity-tracking capabilities. It integrates seamlessly with wired infrastructures and offers redundant load-sharing links, 802.1q trunking, spanning tree and per-VLAN spanning tree (PVST+). It also supports IGMP snooping, which is vital to supporting IP multicast streams. Hi, I use the Zyxel P-2000W v2 wireless VOIP phones with Zyxel G-1000 access points and the hand off calls fairly smoothly using a port for the hand off and using WEP security (the Zyxel is not capable of WPA security yet). I understand that people have problems with some manufactures access points not handling the hand off very well due to latency issues. I can not remember the article but I believe Network World or a similar rag did hand off tests and found the Zyxel to be one of the best at the time. We've got a WDS mesh setup on WRT54GS's here internally with the HyperWRT firmware, and we're able to roam fairly seamlessly with the Linksys WIP300 and the Zyxel phones. The F1000 from UTStarcom gets a little cranky while you're on a call and go from one to the other. The Linksys WIP300 does support WPA and 802.11g. Re: [Asterisk-Users] WiFi Phones
The UTStarcom F1000 with the latest firmware (3.10st) has improved sound volume over the default firmware shipped with the units. Also, TFTP configuration works well so you don't have to configure the units with the keypad. You will need to get the configuration compiler from your vendor and be aware that the default encryption key should be set to NULL rather than F1000 as stated in the docs when compiling your config. At first I was not sure how I would like a WiFi phone because I figured it would sound bad, but I have been very impressed with the quality of the F1000. We have now added it to our VoIP product offerings. - Pedro http://www.traci.netOn 10/8/05, Cory Andrews [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The F3000 is not anticipated to be available for distribution until lateDecember/January, FYI. I also seemed to have a problem transferring calls (using the built in transfer function -- # should still work). Despite many vendors' pages saying that it does 802.1x authentication, it sure looks like WEP is the only available security option. I also seemed to have a problem transferring calls (using the built in transfer function -- # should still work). Despite many vendors' pages saying that it does 802.1x authentication, it sure looks like WEP is the only available security option. Hi I have a Zyxel 2000W wifi phone, setup is easy and quick to perform. However I have found the range less that satisfactory. I have a Cisco 1200 AP and our wireless laptop devices can acccess the network fine, however the Zyxel is pretty rubbish. For example I can be 5 metres away with only a single brick wall in the way and hardly have signal. It could be this particular handset has a problem. I would be interested to see if anyone else has a similar experience or could it be my phone? RE: [Asterisk-Users] WiFi Phones
We bought a couple of the UTStarCom phones. They work fine in the office environment where noise is low, but on our production floor it is impossible for me to hear what is being said and the person on the other end of the call also says that they cannot hear a thing from the F1000 when the wireless phone is in a noisy environment. Still looking for a good WiFi phone for production/factory use. --Phil -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Vahan Yerkanian Sent: Friday, October 07, 2005 5:53 AM To: Asterisk Users Mailing List - Non-Commercial Discussion Subject: Re: [Asterisk-Users] WiFi Phones Andy Hamilton wrote: Anyone have good words to say about any of the WiFi handsets currently available? Re: [Asterisk-Users] WiFi Phones
Jim, I have one of the Hitachi WIP-5000 wifi phones. Been using it about 6 months. I've even travelled with it and tried to make use of hotspots here and there. My primary application for the phone was to replace a Panasonic analog corldess phone and Sipura SPA-2000 combination for my home office. I have both 802.11b (house) and 801.11g (office) on the property. The WIP-5000 is a .11b device. While it supports long encryption keys it does not support WPA...which is specific to .11g. I have been able to make it mount both WLANs with encryption enabled. There is a bit of an issue making it jump from AP to AP seamlessly as both APs must share channels & SSIDs, which is troublesome. As a phone its behaviour is very good. It's very small. The battery life has been good. It has a 2.5mm jack for a standard headset, which is essential for me. It can perform basic PBX functions better than the ATA/Panasonic pair. I wish that the volume would go a bit louder...that's my one major complaint about the phone. However, what I've learned about wifi along the way is more enlightening. My wlan is simply not sufficient to ensure a good voice experience. I've been using several access point including; Linksys WAP54G, Linksys WAP11b & a cheap Belkin 802.11b. None of these provide absolutely continuous calling. Periodically the wlan goes away for a couple of seconds then restores itself. The result is a momentary pause in an ongoing call...very much like a cell phone. The call never gets dropped, but I often need to ask the other party to repeat their last statement. Also, the range you can expect is nowhere near what you will achieve with a normal 2.4 or 5.8 GHz cordless phone. I get around 40-60 feet maximum...and I don't like in a brick house. As an alternative I've also purchased an Aastra 480 CTi which comes with a cordless handset. Too early to know much about this in detail but so far I like it a lot. There is a bit of an issue making it jump from AP to AP seamlessly as both APs must share channels SSIDs, which is troublesome. I've been using several access point including; Linksys WAP54G, Linksys WAP11b a cheap Belkin 802.11b. Re: [Asterisk-Users] WiFi Phones
Anyone have good words to say about any of the WiFi handsets currently available? The UTStarCom F1000 (an 802.11b device) works pretty well. It's about half the $$$ of a Cisco 7920 (which are also pretty nice), but it seems like most of the config is done from the keypad. There is a TFTP option, but it seems that isn't quite perfect. You could check the manual (I programmed the unit without that, except to find that the default password is 88). The unit, I'm guessing, was designed somewhere in Asia, and the language translation shows it a little bit. Sound quality seems pretty good for the few calls I've passed through it. I only have one AP in my house, so I can't comment on roaming. The headset for my cell phone is stereo, and I think the phone would be most happy with a standard 3 conductor plug, but I imagine a headset on a phone is a headset on a phone. The keypad is a touch small, and sometimes I hit the wrong key (and my fingers aren't terribly fat). I also seemed to have a problem transferring calls (using the built in transfer function -- # should still work). Despite many vendors' pages saying that it does 802.1x authentication, it sure looks like WEP is the only available security option. Overall: I would recommend purchasing one, for testing at the very least. They are well priced and of good quality. Battery life seems to be pretty good, too. -A ___ --Bandwidth and Colocation sponsored by Easynews.com -- Asterisk-Users mailing list Asterisk-Users@lists.digium.com http://lists.digium.com/mailman/listinfo/asterisk-users To UNSUBSCRIBE or update options visit: http://lists.digium.com/mailman/listinfo/asterisk-users

When you get it going please compare notes on functionality. So far I am finding Mine appears to be working fine.. the Wisip likes my brand new Cisco AP1100 a lot more than either an airport or linksys ap. This could however be wep as my new Ap doesn't have that setup yet. Mine works ok with the cheap Dlink 1000ap.. I also noticed that the volume level varies considerably depending on how you place the phone next to your ear. It really needs to be lined up just right. Yeah, that's one major flaw in my eyes... RE: [Asterisk-Users] Wifi Phones
I am also going to share this with the list since it may be helpful for other Wisip/* users out there. There are two tricks that I discovered in getting the Wisip to work with *. The first thing is to go into the Wisip's web config and select the SW/Update section. There will be an entry for a tftp server. This is tricky because it looks like an entry to get software updates but it is actually a tftp config file loader. As with many other entries in the wisip it will not allow you to put a blank entry. Just put in an fake entry and it works fine. If you don't do this you will find that no matter how many times you reenter your settings you will lose all the sips settings on each bootup :-). Note that this will be an issue even if you explicitly ordered the phone without a FWD config. Even though they offer the option on the order form they call come configured this way. The second trick is to change the outgoing proxy port from the fwd/wisip default to 5060. Otherwise it is a pretty standard sip setup. Here is the entry from my sip.conf file. If you don't have a G.729 licence then you need to switch the settings to uLaw or aLaw in the codec. Also make sure you match up the dtmf settings. [wisip] type=friend secret=blah host=dynamic context=local dtmfmode=rfc2833 callerid=Joe Schmoe nat=yes qualify=1000 When you get it going please compare notes on functionality. I also noticed that the volume level varies considerably depending on how you place the phone next to your ear. It really needs to be lined up just right. Once I got connected with the cisco and everything running, and the phone placed correctly against my ear I had one really clear 20 minute call with the unit while I roamed around the building. The range was really pretty good. -- Jonathan Moore Director of Technology Winfield Public Schools Office 620.221.5100 Fax 620.221.0508 Quoting Gene Brown [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Could you send me a copy of your sip.conf for the wisip from Pulver. And the config for the phone? I bought one and it worked with FWD but I haven't gotten it to work with *. Thanks Gene Brown [EMAIL PROTECTED] I don't know if anyone else has worked with Spectralink, but I tried to get some demo units to test with a while back and I was really disapointed. At first they claimed they were SIP complient. Then they sent me a contract for the demo. They wouldn't send a demo unless I agreed to have them do an onsite install to the tune of nearly $5000. I would only have been obligated for the install fees if I decided to buy, but not being happy about the install fees and wanting to know why I learned more about how the technology works. My sales rep shared that the phones aren't actually SIP compliant and work through the SVP server to provide SIP compliance to the PBX connection. He also shared that they want provide warranty on their products unless they do the install. Really turned me off, smelled very proprietary, although SVP QOS is pretty cool. I just received a Wisip last week and it looks pretty promising, although I think my unit may be damaged. Pulver support was also very up front with me that they technically only support the Wisip with FWD. They have been good to work with me so far, even rushed me a unit when I explained I was researching for a large purchase. It definetly connects to asterisk, but I think my unit has a bad antena or transmiter. The audio drops in and out and the signal strength indicator shows only one bar even when only about 25' from the access point. Anyone else actually gotten their hands one of these to try with Asterik? I would like to buy a couple hundred of them, but they need work reliably. [Asterisk-Users] Wifi Phones
Hello list, I was going to buy this weekend a Wisip from http://www.pulverinnovations.com/, but jeff got out of stock and he wont have Wisip for the next 3 to 4 weeks. But when I ask if this phone will work with asterisk I got this answer We didn't tested on Asteriskt but on IX66, hotsip, Cisoc etc... However, The IPC5000 should work on other SIP platform without any problem as it is standard based. I just dont want to spend 290 USD for a phone that wont work and that no one seems to use here. So I would like to know if anyone of you guys had try out this model or seen it working, sorry about the unnesesary traffic to the list, my question is simple would this work against asterisk if anyone knows any other Wifi phones besides Wisip and Ciscos expensive toy please tell me. RE: [Asterisk-Users] Wifi Phones
I don't know if anyone else has worked with Spectralink, but I tried to get some demo units to test with a while back and I was really disapointed.
