[asterisk-users] Faxing with Asterisk 1.8.4 T.38
Hi - I am looking for suggestions for ITSPs for faxing with asterisk 1.8. We are based in the US, so would need an ITSP with US DIDs. #1) We would like to use Fax For Asterisk with asterisk 1.8.4 in order to receive faxes via T.38. Sending faxes is not a requirement. Does anyone have a working asterisk 1.8.4 configuration and ITSP provider that they can recommend? We have been trying T.38 DIDs from our current ITSP, but we have been unable to make it work. I am more than happy to purchase new DIDs from a different provider if they will consistently work and are fairly priced. #2) We would also like to connect an ATA directly to some of our fax machines, and use that for both sending and receiving faxes. We have several SPA2102s (and similar models) and have been unable to get them to work with T.38 and our current provider. We have tried connecting the ATAs directly to our ITSP, and also with asterisk sitting in the middle doing pass-through. Once again, I am willing to purchase new DIDs, and purchase new ATAs if someone can point us towards a known working provider configuration. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks! Interesting logic. You don't indicate the kind of setup you are using. If you are trying to FAX over a VoIP connection, its probably that connection making FAXes fail. If you are using mISDN, it is probably that making FAXes fail. If you are using zaptel to bring in FAXes from the PSTN, spandsp should work well. If you are using the agx addons to interface spandsp to asterisk, they have just been updated to work with the latest spandsp. This should be more robust in its error recovery than the older versions of spandsp. However, with a good connection to the PSTN you shouldn't be hitting recovery conditions often enough for that to be too serious. Modems adapt to varying signal levels, and are very insensitive to gain. However, I have received numerous wave files for analysis from different people using Asterisk where the gain is so crazily high that the signal is in a continuous clipping condition. There is no way anything can be reliably decoded from that. I've used it in exactly this mode with TDM400 cards. It worked mostly OK. You might need to fiddle with the gains in the zapata.conf file. (although I now steer people away from this way of doing it and use a separate ATA if they have a real fax machine, or an external fax to email service) Also, I read somewhere that Asterisk should never be used with fax. FAX data is nothing special - however modems are very critical of jitter - you and me and tolerate a bit of packet loss, or the odd duplicate, etc. in an audio stream, a modem can't. (NO CARRIER :) So your asterisk box shouldn't have jitter internally, but if it's running cpu intensive applications, it might have, I guess... A lot of people have success with running iaxmodem - which is just spanDSP connected to some fancy code to understand AT commands, and they then plumb this into hylafax running on a separate server over ethernet.. I've tried ATAs over ethernet to send/receive faxes to real fax machines with good results too. The issue is that the code has exceptions to the GPL, to allow it to be linked to certain patented codecs, for example, without violating patent licenses or the GPL. SpanDSP, on the other hand, is not dual licensed, so you cannot run, for example, both G.729 and SpanDSP in the same binary (legally), since the pure GPL license of SpanDSP pollutes the Asterisk binary to require the same of the G.729 codec (which is not permissible until the patents on G.729 expire). -- Tilghman ___ --Bandwidth and Colocation Provided by http://www.api-digital.com-- asterisk-users mailing list To UNSUBSCRIBE or update options visit: http://lists.digium.com/mailman/listinfo/asterisk-users
[Asterisk-Users] Faxing with Asterisk using both ISDN and FXS
Hi everyone,I have a question about faxing. I am running Asterisk SVN-trunk-r7498 on a ubuntu server and everything is going fine. I have a tdm40b, a tdm04b and an avm fritz!card pci plugged on it.Here is what I'd like to do: Receiving fax via the ISDN avm fritz!card, sending the fax via email (for the moment I know I can do that) but also routing the fax trough my old fax machine which would be plugged in an FXS port (which means using the old fax machine as a printer). Using the same old fax machine to send fax which means translating the fax so that the ISDN card understand it and send it (which means using the old fax machine as a scanner).Any idea if it is possible? [Asterisk-Users] faxing with asterisk
Hi all, I was wondering if someone would mind giving me an example of how to configure a fax machine with asterisk. We would ideally like to have 2 fax extensions configured, one is a modem for faxing the other is an actual fax machine. Im not sure if I should configure them as standard extensions or if they should be in their own context or what. The user guide doesnt seem to talk about faxing so any help is greatly appreciated. Im confused about contexts and signaling (fxo fxs) and how they effect faxing. I have tried many configurations in extensions.conf and Zapata.conf. Here is an example of our part of our extensions.conf file [globals] FAX=Zap/13 [default] include = voicemail include = phones include = functions include = pbxsupport include = incomingfax exten = s,1,Answer exten = s,2,DigitTimeout,5 exten = s,3,ResponseTimeout,10 exten = s,4,Background(std-welcome) exten = 0,1,Macro(stdexten,200,${RINGOUT}) exten = 1,1,Macro(stdexten,201,${ACCESSSERVICES}) exten = 1,2,Goto,default|s|4 exten = 3,1,Macro(stdexten,205,${SOFTWARE}) exten = 3,2,Goto,default|s|4 exten = 4,1,Macro(stdexten,205,${INFRASTRUCTURE}) exten = 4,2,Goto,default|s|4 exten = 5,1,Macro(stdexten,202,${PDAMOBILE}) exten = 5,2,Goto,default|s|4 exten = 8,1,Background(std-directory) exten = fax,1,Goto,incomingfax|s|1 exten = #,1,Hangup exten = t,1,Goto(#,1) exten = i,1,Playback(invalid) exten = o,1,Macro(stdexten,200,${RINGOUT}) [incomingfax] exten = s,1,Dial(${FAX},30,d) exten = s,2,Hangup Zapata.conf ;FAX line callerid=fax 207 context=incomingfax channel = 13 Thanks, Steve Bradwell 905.387.6526 x202 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
