[asterisk-users] where did the switch statement come from?

Hi all, I have looked up the applications and function in asterisk but i could not find the help for the switch statement which is used in several places in sample extensions.conf file. i am using asterisk 1.4.2. On voip-info.org the switch statement seems to be used to connect 2 asterisk servers,
