And see no instruction to gunzip, but I have been known to misread!
Once it failed, I figured that out, but others attempting to follow the
excellent step by step instructions may not.

Were you not gunzip'ing the downloaded file? I updated the instructions
to make that clearer.

The kernel used on the 0.6.x branch won't properly support that chipset
without a patch. An image from trunk should work fine. We hope to have
some early test images available soon if you don't want to build your own.

The network card gets discovered but dhcp can´t find an address. I googled
