Here is a simpler condensed one...
gunzip -c yadda | dd of=/dev/(device) bs=16k
the bs switch will let you define block size and is very useful when
dealing with cf cards to eliminate the additional writes done in dd'ing
(it will also write to the cf faster)

2. On Linux or *BSD use dd to transfer the image to the CF card. (gunzip
the image, then dd if=astlinux-XXX.img of=/dev/sdX where sdX is your
compact flash card).

Once it failed, I figured that out, but others attempting to follow the
excellent step by step instructions may not.

Were you not gunzip'ing the downloaded file? I updated the instructions
to make that clearer.
