Though he could set up a webserver without sudo -- say, Caddy -- it would be of no use. He wouldn't be able to actually create a domain because he wouldn't be able to go through the verification process -- because he wouldn't own the server hosting

You can create a website that also serves as your personal clouud storage. Even if you don't want a website, you can still create a web server and have it host files if you wish people to download things. For instance, I have a directory on my web

If he doesn't have sudo access, how could he install a VPN? Because to install something, you'd need a administrative rights to do so, don't you? Like everyone said, if this is your own VPS account, you should have administrative rights on that VPS

Exactly, and in that case it's no wonder they're a bit weary on trust. Typically you should know what you can and can't do, and if they need you to do something for them under sudo and it happens that they haven't let you in, either send them

Probably a friend who is a bit wary on trust. Still, if you have to ask the question, you probably don't need the account.

You can also use your VPS to perform remote port forwarding. You can either use SSH tunneling if you're dealing with applications that use TCP, or Secure Socket Funneling for TCP or UDP traffic. Essentially, this sends traffic destined for your VPS

@monkey999: THe big question is how you've got access to a vps but don't have sudo access. If you're sysadminning for someone then they should have put your user in the sudo group. If this is your own account, what the hell kind of vps provider
