Re: Windows Compatibility on Apple's New Hardware From Now on
@26, the problem is that Microsoft licenses Windows for ARM to OEMs only, last time I checked. I can't go to the MS store and buy a license for windows and expect that to work on ARM.

Re: Windows Compatibility on Apple's New Hardware From Now on
As far as I know, Windows works great on ARM. What is this about it not doing so? There may be some issues specifically for accessibility, but I'm pretty sure NVDA supports it. Microsoft has mostly done the same thing, ARM
Re: Windows Compatibility on Apple's New Hardware From Now on
Problem with running Linux on Apple devices now is that Apple may not release hardware specifications/programmer documentation so that we can teach Linux how to work with their hardware. It wouldn't surprise me if they didn't do
Re: Windows Compatibility on Apple's New Hardware From Now on
Apple is notorious for soldering RAM and SSDs nowadays. They're also starting to glue batteries. My biggest problem isn't necessarily that they're moving to ARM, it's more the fact it gives them even more control over
Re: Windows Compatibility on Apple's New Hardware From Now on
Yeah, I don't get it. Apple has done what literally everyone else has done and literally also they moved to a more standard architecture, not a less standard one.As far as I know, being Arm doesn't effect peripherals or ram
Re: Windows Compatibility on Apple's New Hardware From Now on
It appears the only way forward is to presumably run ARM compatible operating systems virtually in an ARM virtual machine environment. Unless Microsoft decides to release ARM Windows to the masses, say goodbye to the possibility
Re: Windows Compatibility on Apple's New Hardware From Now on
No, that's actually limitations of X86 getting in the way. They can't translate VMs. It breaks the isolation of the VM from a security perspective, but more to the point it's slow. The reason that VMs are practical

Re: Windows Compatibility on Apple's New Hardware From Now on
@12No one sighted really cares about Bootcamp anymore because virtualization is pretty good, and if you read the article I linked part of the issue is apparently that Windows isn't licensed for consumers on ARM
Re: Windows Compatibility on Apple's New Hardware From Now on
@ogomez92, Yeah that's what I went with in the end. I'm getting a Windows SFF PC, just wanted to see theoretically what virtualising Windows on a Mac would be like.

um, if you want to use windows primarily why don't you get a windows pc but in the mini form factor? They are called mini pcs and they exist

a 2000 doller mac would buy me a 32GB windows machine desktop and 2 extra ssd hard drive of 2TB, in this case, i don't need a mac at all, and i'm never ever gonna buy one anyways

Re: Windows Compatibility on Apple's New Hardware From Now on
@12, Apple controls literally everything about the platform now. I doubt Windows will run perfectly -- if at all -- on the new macs just because I doubt MS has drivers for it and Apple probably won't port their driver code over
Re: Windows Compatibility on Apple's New Hardware From Now on
Isn't their a version of Windows for ARM computers now anyway? Why would they take out Bootcamp entirely rather than just requiring that you only use an ARM compatible OS. I mean Linux has several distros that work on ARM I
Re: Windows Compatibility on Apple's New Hardware From Now on
As far as i've heard; and read; running windows on the new arm macs will still be possible; but only via vertual machines. That's as far as I know. I've no idea if bootcamp would work.

Vmware's accessibility is fine on Windows, save for one panel that can be worked around with object nav.

Maybe the Mac audio latency story is different, but in general VM audio latency has tended to consistently be a problem.

Actually, if you use parallels desktop you don't have any noticable latency. At least on my macbook pro with 32 gigs of ram and an i9 8 core processor. It's technically not accessible unless you use VOCR.

I got curious so did a quick google, and looks like Bootcamp won't be available on Arm: https://www.theverge.com/2020/6/24/2130 … -boot-campThis isn't surprising as Vms are actually very good these days, but unfortunately
