Windows Live Mail doesn't work seemlessly with Microsoft mail services anymore, and they dropped support for it. You have to actually configure servers to get it working. even then it's not always relyable. I've been having trouble

I did once try Thunderbird with supernova back when I first tried windows 7, and while it was certainly usable it seemed to a lot of things to tab through, though whether the layout can be made more minimal or heck whether things have just advanced since

That is actually an issue these days and one of the reasons I somewhat fell out with supernova on windows 10 the default windows 10 client won't work with supernova at all despite it being textual. From what I gather on windows 10 you have two options
