That...actually sounds like a good thing.  I can handle the quirks like indentation—once I get into the habit I wont even think about it. Ill probably keep messing around with BGT on the side, though. The adventure game I have in mind for my eventual project will have loads of maps to move around in, with 3D movement (some of the characters can fly and/or dive into deep water, so this is kind of necessary), but although turn-based battles give me a chance to work out how to attack before I do so, the fact that unless theres a way to defend myself during the enemys turn they might kill me if Im outnumbered is rather unpleasant. Ill work that out later. If Python can do everything BGT does plus some, Ill be happy. Edit: AND ITS FRE! Im officially sold.

Python is a full-blown programming language with C integration.This means that engines that huge titles use can be what is called wrapped in python. That way you can use the engine in python.So basically, you can do anything in python. The only reason why you go to C or C++ is for the speed.But you are just learning now, so dont worry about anything yet!BTW, real-time combat is easier than movement like swamp IMO.

What a great app, I tried it several times already! However, it hasnt begun as expected...When I used the app for the first time, I had a guy, probably British but that doesnt play a role for me, who was complaining that he couldnt see me. In the background, I heard some people laughing. All right, I turned around my phone and then told him about an iTunes card I had on my table. I was just testing this app, and the card, as far as I knew at this time, had already been used. So I just wanted him to read the code, he was instructing me how to hold my camera, then he said something like Yeah, now I can see it, and disconnected.Not quite sure whether it was my internet connection which interrupted for a short time, but when I then tried to call another volunteer, I was waiting a few minutes and nothing happened.A few days lat
 er, I gave it a nother try, which worked just as expected.The guy could tell me that it was an iTunes card which has been already used. Then, I showed him a closed package and he corrected me several times to hold the camera right. He first was assuming that the package provides a firewire cable, but after putting my hand a bit to the left, he could recognize that it was a micro USB cable.This app is just awesome, and I would love to see this service growing! I would also apreciate multiple languages. I selected German and English as my languages and so far, I only got English speaking volunteers. I can imagine that, since the service is still growing, there are more English people than for example German people, so I hope thisll change soon.

Got it working last weekend. In win7 64 bit you have to enable driver test mode in order to get the bns emulation running.For images larger than 2,88 mb you can use mkisofs to create cd images of a directory.I also created a couple of batchfiles which ask the directory of which the image should be made of. The images are named floppy.flp and cd.iso, so you dont have to browse the images every time you want to mount them.If you want to start the speech every time you boot the system, edit autoexec.bat and add s in the end of the file.The only two problems I have is that I cannot access the asap control panel with alt+enter and I couldnt get the audio to work in dos games with sound, but otherwise it is really awesome!

Thanks for the fixes, it does seem to make a difference to both the calibrations and the help screen, Im also glad more colourful descriptions are on the cards. I will confess I was a little disappointed when the combat turned out to be automatic rather than actually turn based, but if it is! to be automatic, making it feel like actually witnessing two robots knock the bolts out of each other rather than read the output of a couple of random dice rolls would make things considerably more fun. I confess this is an issue Ive had with several combat based games in the past such as Alien adoption agency, which is very much why I was so interested in the story aspects.

I can confirm that the arrow keys dont work under Jaws, thats probably why hes going to add letter key equivalents, since PureBasic probably has no equivalent to the BGT Install_Keyhook() function, since PureBasic is a general purpose language.

thats actually not a stupid question, believe it or not. Many programmers dont know what that does.Its commonly called the ternary operator, or at least it is in common usage. There is probably a more official name for it, but as its the only operator that takes 3 operands ternary operator is pretty unambiguous.Anyhow, its a shorthand if statement:expr ? true : false;Evaluates to whatever true is if expr is true or whatever false is if expr is false. If you wrote it out the long way:if(expr) {
 variable =true;
} else {
 variable = false
}I dont use it often, but thats probably because most of my expressions are already pretty long (o the joys of mathematical coding) and its worth just breaking them up. Also it lets me put in comments.Perhaps the most common use is this line, which is usually abstracted behind a function:var = var  0 ? -var : var;Also known as absolute value.

Not arguing with that last poster. I completely agree. I renewed my membership last year after years of not playing. I was bored, I had twenty bucks, why not? The continuously increasing AT prices for things and the astounding lack of content over the past year are my main two complaints.Mostly, what Ive seen over the past twelve months are repetitions of contest after contest with only a few tiny hints of new material thrown in.I like Sryth as a game. I enjoy playing through the stories and adventures. But I too feel that over the last few years, its become all about money in the pocket and less about creating more content to play.

A word of caution. If youre only doing tiles or voxels (tiles but in a 3d array) you do not want any of the aforementioned physics libraries. The physics libraries only help when you try to do something like swamp where everything can turn and move at arbitrary angles.As for anything else, Frastlin is right. It doesnt really matter if youre in BGT or not at the moment-you still have to learn programming itself, one way or another.

You can just add aria-label. But you missed my entire point. Thats not necessarily implemented everywhere nor guaranteed to be presented in the way you think it is. The standard gives almost no guarantees on that regard. Have you actually tested this with screen readers and, if so, which?The thing people dont understand about Aria is that the AT market moves slowly. Every time I bring it up, someone jumps on it like its the end-all solution for everything. If youre doing proper testing across multiple browsers and screen readers, go ahead. If youre not doing proper testing, please just stop now and think about all the harm that making everything in your entire game a div does in terms of accessibility. At worst, your new found solution of Aria will actually break things, especially if you ever go beyond Aria-label--I have seen this many times, most notably with Google.

DOS Games with sound probably use Sound Blaster, which I doubt your computer knows how to emulate. Ive never tried this, but maybe theres a virtual Sound Blaster out there for this sort of thing?

This message is going to be weird. So just be prepared for it to be weird.I am very bored right now in my life. I am not quite sure why. I have, over the last few weeks, acquired a lot of new sound effects. I, however, do not know what to use them for. This is where you come in:Your goal: give me a scenario with which I could make a cut scene or other extended audio production such as an audio drama. If it requires voice acting, I may have difficulty getting actors, but otherwise, I probably have any sound that you want and a fairly high number and varied selection 
 of music. And its all royalty-free. If you have an idea of, say, a funny cut scene youd like to hear, such as the stuff that you get in the elevator program, or if you are creating a game and need a cut scene, or if you want a custom sound or 2 or 3 or 4 or more for your game and you dont have or want another sound designer, let me know, either through forum email or through replies to this topic. I dont really check PMs all that often, so forum email is a better way to contact me. Hmm. Interesting.Since my game is not primarily for screen readers I do have to prioritize where I spend development time. If adding an ARIA label element isnt the nice solution it should be, I may change to tiny images with alt text inside any mysterious divs. Would be nice if there was a sure fire way to include HTML info targeted just for audio browsers and screen readers.I dont use divs as visual elements in many areas, only when I cant get around it in a more standard way.

need help with my new phone

hi all, recently I bought an asus zenphone 4s running android 4.4.2 kitkat.the problem I am having with this new phone is when I want to type something, like entering passwords, sending SMS, typing phone numbers ETC.Ive turned on talkback, and I check the settings for it.it seams that the typing echo is set correctly(always speak typed keys).however when I start sliding around the letters in the touchscreen, talkback doesnt say any letter, except when I double click on that letter that I want to type.so, whats wrong with this typing thing? is it a talkback bug? or I have to mess around with the asus system?

Alt attributes generally only work on images, sadly. Assigning ARIA roles based on _javascript_ might work, or you could append some text DOM nodes that are only visible to screenreaders to determine if there is damage or not. HTH,Balliol

Yeah. The reason I say this is because, I had been playing sryth since about 2004. Ive seen what it was like. I was there when stoneback hill was put in as a paid adventure. I saw the signs even then that this could go very, very wrong. But things were great for a long time. I fell in love with the proving grounds adventures. But then around 2009 or 2010, it really started going downhill. Adventures where starting to be incredibly less creative. The spark was gone. It became clear that the game had become nothing more than a grab for cash and little else. I just hope it can die in peace someday.

I agree that a turn by turn combat would be awesome. However for a browser game which is not using Java or Flash or some other plugin, this is very hard to do. You would need to ensure that each player is online (and not idle) at the same time, that they dont wander away from their browser, and then have each players browser constantly poll the server to find out what the other player did and if its your turn or youre still waiting. Its possible, just very heavy server load and a monster programming task. As a solo developer at this time, its more time and effort than Id want to spend. Especially since my vision of the game is to have so much more than just combat. I want the combat itself to only be about 5% of what there is available to do in the game.If Im ever so fortunate to earn any income from the game, I might be able to hire a second programmer who could help with jazzy feature improvements like that!

Actually, having combat as part of a larger game sounds a nice plan, sinse too often in games with auto combat your left finding that auto combat is all there is, plus as I said Im a big fan of exploring.Flash and occasionally java have sometimes been dodgy from an access perspective as regards real time updates, but I have seen it done in the game puppet nightmares, (which actually has an awsome combat system though I did wish it had more by way of descriptive text). If you fight an online battle against someone else you can choose a time limit for each turn as short as one minute or as long as seven, (I usually prefer a long limit myself to give me time to read my opponents actions and assign actions for the three creatures in my party sinse puppet nightmares involves fights between teams of three puppets each). The two players each submit a turn, and after both have submitted the page refreshes you get the results for the round with the actions 
 of everyones creatures. Theres nothing that special in terms of flashy controls, just a timer, and if a player times out before submiting their actions, the other player wins the fight. I dont know how complex the backend of this is, indeed given how complex the combat in puppet nightmares is there is possibly something heavy duty happening, but in terms of basic system and interface it works fine and isnt all that different from fighting a battle against computer opponents other than perhaps waiting for the other player to complete their turn.Im not saying roboid should have this sort of system, just that its not always necessary to go all realtime and flashy for controls when timers and calculating submitted info would work. Getting back to the game as is however, I do have one slightly more practical question. Combat seems pretty random, whether I win or lose fights seems heavily dependent upon what stance I ch
 oose and what my opponent uses, but sinse there is no way of knowing before hand (well not in the matches for competitions or the practice droid fights), Im not sure how to make a tactical choice, indeed I tend to win or lose roughly half of the time despite having calibrated my robot, done several practices and bought a weapon. I also unfortunately keep playing matches against the same robot in the competition, but I suspect this is more due to the lack of lower rank players at the moment, (perhaps until the player base fills up there could be some computer generated opponents just to keep the variety?).

You have to convert your .vmx file to a .ovf before you can use them with virtualbox. As far as I can tell, virtualbox is not accessible.I have a problem with Linux vms. Ive downloaded both a vinux and Sonar iso, created a vm with them, and neither one has sound working. I checked to see if my soundcard was connected; it is. Does anyone know how to fix this?

It may but you may have issues with speed, and if your VPN has a usage limit of some kind you may have issues with that.Like I said virtually all on demand services have location restrictions of some kind, for example I cant go onto the on demand service of a US TV network and use it for the same reason. Its for complicated legal reasons, short version is they only buy the rights to something for the region they broadcast to, or in the case of the BBC where they make their own content not limiting it would harm their ability to sell rights to broadcasters in other countries. Its all about money sadly.

I hear you. I had the same headaches with IE non-standards compliance. Ug.From a developer perspective though, if the effort required far outstrips the potential returns, most profit driven companies wont bother. then youre stuck with developers who make games specifically for VI players and the few smaller devs who do it for the interest or goodwill.None of this helps the VI community, who I imagine is starved for quality media. I have a deaf uncle who has the parellel struggles with poor captioning standards.Ug.

Well if you look at the dosbox site there is vdm sound which is supposed to be a dos sound driver bridge for use in windows and dosbox I am not sure how that works with vm software but it may be a looker anyway.Its not been modified since 2004 though so dont know if it even works or not.

I can see your point about shifting environments but I tend to just go with a generic bunch of fantasy style music so theres at least something in the background, I find it oils my brain a little.

It might be. It might not. Its going to depend on the screen reader and the platform and whether you ask me that question now or in 6 months. I read the algorithm for the computation of text that Arias spec provides and its not exactly simple. Or short, for that matter. It almost certainly works with NVDA and Firefox, and Id be willing to bet quite a lot that it doesnt work well or at all with Voiceover on OS X. To get some idea, consider all the HTML5 features and how long its taking for them to all be consistently implemented everywhere. Now cut the user base down to like 1% and factor in the fact that Jaws is money-driven, hasnt done anything major in years, has their hooks in with governmental agencies, and is still the most popular screen reader.Im sorry if Im snappish here. Sighted devs find Aria and then assume that its the end-all and they can go right ahead with whatever 
 practice is causing the problem in the first place, which is why we have things like Angular.js that provide no end of trouble without special extensions. The problem with Aria is that it is almost exclusively for accessibility. As a consequence, its actually really fuzzy where the browsers responsibility ends and the screen readers responsibility begins; the implementation involves both. Basically, its assumed that if youre using Aria you know what youre doing, so the end user cant usually override this. In fact, overriding application role took a very large discussion on the NVDA tracker, and is still a major problem. Aria-label is relatively safe, in that the way its likely to fail is simply that the screen reader doesnt respect it, but going beyond that will almost certainly cause you to start running into bugs that may render something marginally usable unusable, or fix something tha

Might be worth checking whether VMWare has any sound drivers included, sometimes you need to have VMWare install its own drivers onto the virtual machine for the virtual sound card it uses to work. At least I seem to think thats how it worked when I played with a Windows VM some years ago. Whatever you use will need to be set up from within the VM so I dont think VDMSound will work though I could be wrong.

this is because of the oem or rom builder adding a custom, inaccessible keyboard. However, there is a simple fix: 1: On your computer, go to https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta … hl=en and sign in when prompted. 2: find a button that sais install and click it. 3: in the list of devices, find and select your phone. 4: click ok or accept, In a few minutes, you will get a notification on your phone that says successfully installed google keyboard. 4: Once you get this notification, open the settings app and double tap on language and input. 5: Under keyboards and input methods, slide the google keyboard switch to the on possition by double tapping and hitting ok on the dialog that warns that this input method may be able to collect all text you type, including personal data like passwords and credit card numbers, this is a standard notification, it does not mean anything malicious! 6: Finally, find the option above that that sais default input method and select google keyboard as your default. This will fix your problem of talkback not reporting letters you slide around because talkback knows how to interact with the google keyboard. Hope this helps.

New facebook group created for audiogame devs

Hi all!I made a new facebook group for audiogame developers. I know fb is not the main way to communicate for most of you, but here it is anyway. It is for me, and I think groups are a good way to discuss things fast and get proper notifications of new posts etc.So here it is, the audiogame developers group, mainly bgt of course since that is what I code in:https://m.facebook.com/groups/392768150901506

Yep. Its not immediately obvious, but it is wonderful.Pythons version makes more sense, although its not in quite the same order, so porting between Python and C-like languages is more work with these.The Python version goes:x = A if p else cIIRC, theres no punctuation before the else. Itd be more screen reader readable if there was, but it at last makes a little more sense. I like ?: more for compactness, but Pythons goal is readability, and this is certainly more readable.(The developers of Python resisted adding it for ages, as Ive heard. But its too bloody convenient so people kept demanding it.)

I dont know. In a way I feel sorry for them--theyve been so utterly shaken by the loss of customer faith and the complete disinterest in their consumer products that theyre now willing to make almost any compromise; only the enterprise market is there for them now, more or less. I like to think that they will rise again as the new underdog, having been thoroughly spanked into obedience. To watch Google now, youd think they were the evil guys and MS the saints! But we will have to see, really.

Thomas,I was happy that Piotr Machacz, Pitermach was able to rewrite my DOS Breakout game for Windows.But like I did with Packman, I thought keeping the original sounds was not as important, as they had to be down sampled to fit on a 1.44 mb floppy. In his second version he did add the down-sampled DOS sounds and I wish I had kept the original higher sampled versions.David Greenwood of GMA game converted some of his DOS games to windows that he once sold and put in his free games page.If more of my DOS games are rewritten for Windows Ill start a page of them on my site too.

Yeah. And thats why Im basically qualified for a variety of jobs that pay like $60/hour and up-even the number of people who know where to start is amazingly tiny, and the governmental regulations and stuff just keep coming...
