Op Ed: Empire Mud and the warring system

It is with regret that I am discontinuing work on the empiremud soundpack. This is because of a conversation I had with the lead administrator Khufu about declaring war against other empires, which is legal to do within the game. He actively stopped the war that I had legitimately declared and forced me off my land, and told me that I was not allowed to declare war with a certain empire, Knashteran, because its members were "afraid to log in".The background: Declaring war on an empire can only work when at least one of its members is online. When you declare war, you can reclaim open tiles that belong to that empire and destroy its buildings until one of the empires has no online members, and for an hour after that. When i was looking for a place to start up my empire, I did not realize that my desired location was very close to some extended roads from Knashteran, and my city ended up being built with its roads going through it. I tried to negotiate with Knashteran to remove the roads for a sizeable payment, but they said no, and told me that they would retain the roads if those roads would persuade me to pick up and leave. That clued me in that they were only keeping the roads to antagonize me, as they could have easily shifted location slightly, retained all their empire inventory, and stayed out of our way. So I declared war against them to take those roads back. After I told Knashteran that I would declare war on them if they logged on, they complained to the admins about it.Khufu also told me that I could move, and even showed me to a large plot of land that would suit just well, but the mud is about power, and we were obviously the more poewrful empire. If knashteran were afraid of us they could have either done what we wanted, or moved. That is the way that PK muds like this work. Look at lords and knights. There is no one on there complaining that players rae too powerful and are bullying them off their land and destroying their stuff. They fight back or they retreat. We will not  be making new ones, because it is obviously a stance that Khufu takes very seriously and will not change no matter how many good reasons we give. I will continue to have a link to the Empire Mud soundpack but it won't be updated anymore.

And don't anyone even mention Max Shrapnel. rofl I spent cash on raceway and shrapnel both, but I'd spend it again if those would actually be released by someone with what was promised of them at the time. Now, who knows. lol I'd love to see if castle quest from BSC can make a come back to, but that's just another dream shattered and broken. sadly.I don't mean to bring up lost games, but if I think about them too much, and what they might have been, I'm still bumbed about the loss of those titles to this day.

The training camp will be covered in the next part, sometime tomorrow, most likely. I will give some tips now though. First, even though it is tempting to train on the medium to hard difficulty levels, don't do it yet.  So much of this game is based on stamina, and your newly created character does not have the stamina to train at the higher levels. For stand up training, stay away from "quick strike" training. The reason for this is that each strike combo is listed on the screen for a second or two and then goes away. Sadly, I was never able to read that with OCR.For training things like heavy bag hands or feet, there is something that is not so good for us blind players. The bag will light up in the area where you have to punch. By the way, to throw body blows, use the left trigger along with the x and y buttons. Here is the trick to training heavy bag hand or 
 feet. The trick is not to throw so many punches you get tired. Throw like three or four punches then wait a second or two, and then throw some more. The reason for this is to keep your stamina up. Also, if you throw a punch and it is in the wrong area (throwing a head punch when a body blow is required), the trainer will say things like "what's he giving you, where's the target?" Throwing less punches will let you get back on target quicker.In the next part as well, I am going to discuss blocking and more defence. In short, you will block high with right bumper, and block low with right trigger. My advice, stick to blocking high! Protect that face. At this point, there isn't a real good way to tell when body shots are coming. This will most likely change in UFC 3, however.Jerey

Aha, it's Mv 30, not Mv--=30. I forgot to remove it again.Blindndangerous, for your errors, reload plugins that gave you errors and save the world.I did try to make the pack in its own client, but people complained a lot about how hard it was to use. I can't make it straight to the world like yugioh or squaresoft, and not only that, the plugins drove people nuts every time.

Latest is here. http://www.gammon.com.au/files/mushclie … ent505.exeI would highly suggest that you make this it's own sound pack, and not rely only on mush-z to get the plugins. Get the ones that you require from your readme, install that .exe I gave you, put your pack together and zip it up. If people want to use mush-z, that's on them, but don't automatically assume that people are going to do that. I'd make this in it's own client.

Weird, my last comment seems to have vanished.  I'll type it again I guess.The game is a restaurant management game, but so far I've kept its details to myself until it's ready to be majorly tested.  The game has a lot going on so right now the part I'm sort of stuck on is how to let the player understand and set all of the game options without being overwhelmed or bored silly.  This summer has been the busiest summer I can remember in my life, so I haven't had much time to work on it lately.  The skilled sound master Kai has already produced tons of great sounds for the game, so hopefully it will turn out being a fun enough game to justify the sound work he has put into it, ROFL!

I agree with Joseph Westhouse, we shouldn't include titles that are still in development.  If we include games based on developer promises, USA Raceway would be at the top (or near the top) of this list.  While the game doesn't exist, the odds of it being completed are just as high as they've always been.

Hello,and when also good titles are worsing themselves, that is very hard for us too. Typically RTR, it was perfect first person shooter comparable to Counter strike for example and where is it now? Muhammad: I appreciate the shout-out, but for fairness' sake, Out of Sight Games really shouldn't be listed in a list of top audio game dev until we've released a project that can be judged on actual gameplay, and not just from its demo audio :-)CAE_Jones has a really good point, which is that the development cycle for small indies is unforgiving. Even more so for small indies who can't hope to make a living off their games and have to develop in what time they can find around day jobs—and since the audio games market is such a small niche, that's probably going to remain the case for audio game developers unless we find a way to market to the mainstream as well.CAE's also right that the issue isn't that we have outdated genres. Check out big releases on Steam and you're going to find tons of side-scrollers. The issue is that mainstream devs are pushing the envelope—creating games with high production values, interesting premises, compelling writing, and so on. That's what we need to be doing. There's nothing stopping a blind dev from making a blind-accessible side scroller with a riveting story, powerful script, and engaging features akin to anything being made today—and a game like that wouldn't be stuck in the '90s, it would be every bit as modern as a 3D Call of Duty clone or anything else.Big Gun: Regarding my comments on post eight, I'm not saying that the future of audio games lies in developers going back and making old games accessible. With very rare exceptions, that's probably never going to happen. What I'm talking about is developers making new games with more and more attention to accessibility, until hopefully some day the mainstream titles being released are just as playable by the blind as they are by the sighted.

To go to a specific time stamp, you should be able to go into the Selection area and edit the "Selection Start" field to whatever time stamp you want the cursor at. I think that's probably the best way to do it, though there may be another.Rastislav Kiss: I've had that happen on occasion by accident. I think this usually happens if the track isn't stopped. Be sure that you've stopped the track with Space, and not just paused it with P, before you delete. Sometimes weird things seem to happen with the selection and it doesn't actually register the selection, so it defaults to selecting the whole track—I'm sure that's user error on my part, I just don't know what I'm doing to make it do that. If that happens I just hit control + Z (or command + Z on Mac) to undo, and do my selection again. I've also found that  control/command + K instead of delete gives me more consistent results for deleting audio, for some reason.

Hi,I also read the documentation too, but I like that this game has an in-game tutorial so there's no need for it. Also, I have found out something. There is definitely a hidden scene in this game, and you will learn, or at least get a better idea of, who Priscilla is. I've now finished everything this game has to offer, it seems. I enjoyed it. The hidden scene was a nice little bonus and it did surprise me.If you want  a hint of what to do, I've put it in spoilers below, but I have not revealed the exact instructions, I'd like to see if anyone can figure it out first.spoilerspacePay close attention during the very beginning of the finale, to what Heart says. Another quick thing, Simba wondered if all those restarts would count against statistics. The answer is no. While you are in the Ultimate fighter tournament, you aren't technically in the UFC, so you don't have an official record yet. Your first UFC fight that counts is the finals of the ultimate fighter tournament. After that, any wins and losses count for good. Jeremy

Hi,Audacity is good, hovever for some reason it makes crazy things on my computer. For example I select a part of a track, make sure that it is selected properly and when I hit delete, it removes full track. Just adding my 2 cents about walkthroughs. Firstly, if you solve a quest with no help, another solving it via a step-by-step guide doesn't undermine your achievement at all. Being guided right to an item is not at all rewarding, unless the game is really enjoyable to play while you're doing it, so that the end result isn't as important as the journey. Being given a decent hint then going there yourself and finding stuff can be pretty satisfying. Doing it completely alone with no hints is the most satisfying of all. But the trouble with the latter in STW is that it's such a massive chore to search the place systematically, and add to that the fact that the thing you're seeking might not even be present at the time you pass by its location. The constant need to stop and recharge makes it such a drag to explore maps thoroughly. Challenges are great, but chores are chores. Cleaning your house with a toothbrush is a challenge but not one most of us would enjoy 
 taking on. Games are supposed to be fun, and I don't think STW quite has the balance right.

Hi.[[wow]], thanks for the demo part, I already listened to it and will get on character creation very soon.One hint for you which I found out, when you are streaming to the PC with the xbox app and there is a text input dialogue coming up, you can also type in the text via the pc keyboard, tab over to the ok button and hit enter on that, will work quicker for inputs like messages and other things you might need.Greetings Moritz.

Forgive me for saying so, Lirin, because obviously it's hard not to take that sort of criticism a little personally—but you have no basis to say there's something wrong with the mastering. You can say that the mastering is different than how you would do it personally, or different than you would expect, but saying that there is something wrong with it suggests that there is an objective "right" way to master a soundtrack—which there is not.If I understand what you're commenting on, though, it's interesting that you use the phrase "not natural"—since I think what you're picking up on is the fact that this album has more of a concert hall feel, whereas most movie scores remove any sense that the music is being played in any sort of real space, and simply put it right up in front of your face. Of the two, I'd actually say that the latter is less realistic.Just my thoughts—but again, I'm pretty biased. Also, we didn't quite have a big enough budget to hire Hans Zimmer, so comparing our soundtrack to a Hollywood score might be a bit unfair in the first place...

I run it on 32 bit Windows 7 with JAWS in suspend mode and the only issue I've found is that it sometimes doesn't give you your score at the end of the game, however I now believe that whether you are told your score depends on where you are in the game when it ends.

I want to clarify about the whole "stuck in the 1990s" thing. Audio Games are barely relatable to 1990s games. Side-scrollers don't inherently suck. It's just that there are like 2 in Audio which are worth considering comparing to mainstream side-scrollers. Sure, sound quality, whatever, but gameplay and content are rarely anything compared to even the 1980s. We have a few titles that push it toward the mid-late 90s, and those aren't the side-scrollers. Swamp, Manamon, and maybe the endless stream of drama-spawning FPSs sorta-kinda invoke 1997-2005. It's not that we need things besides side-scrollers (we do), but that we need side-scrollers that wouldn't lose to Super Mario Bros 2 without a fight. We have BK3, and that's more Megaman without the timing-sensitive traps and puzzles (and way more content than the 1990s Megaman games, so it kinda balances out?).As a general rule, Audio Games suck. At this rate, the mainst
 ream will become fully accessible, or they'll find a general workaround for blindness, or the world will be devoured by Galactus, before the number of Audio Games which can compare to the massive libraries of pre-PS2/xbox games gets to double digits.A Hero's Call is a massive step in the right direction, but it's been in development for several years, has done pretty much everything right in terms of the process and funding, and is still not availible. We could have 5 of these secretly in production, now, and nothing will change for the remainder of this decade.Now, maybe I'm more pessimistic than usual because I have been fighting tooth and nail to get enough sleep and have failed for several nights running, but I'm not seeing anything big enough to catch us up to the N64 coming along any time soon.

There are (yes) audio games that are close to the mainstream level like Shadow Line, Paladin of the Sky for its content but not sounds I think, most of VGStorm's games are quite good games. Swamp is great also. I think A Hero's Call will be a big thing for a brighter future for audio games.Edit: woups, how I forgot the BK series? There are few audio games that are valuable, but compared to the early two thousands, seems that our audio gaming world is getting better as time passes.

Pracs can be bought for xp too though, so no need to buy any with credits.Currently crafting skills don't really make anything too exciting, no, but they are also relatively new skills, and more will come later. Being able to inset gems in crafted items and such should increase some of their stats, from what I gather.As for gold being hard to get, that isn't really true either. If you have a thief you can learn to pick pockets and steal gold, that can bring in a fair amount relatively fast. Necromancers can sell their soulstones which can give in huge amounts of gold. Mages can brew potions and scribe scrolls that they can sell, people are always looking for consumables. Druids can sell suncatchers or starcatchers if they're high enough level. If any of those things don't work, do quests, jobs, learn where the piles of gold load and go pick up those from time to time, learn what makes equipment attractive and sell such items on auction.
