Re: text-based games and screen readers

Kenshira is correct here. A lot of games, even if their interface is text either use funky programming environments that do not render the text in a standard way a screen reader can pickup, or alternatively, simply use graphical representations of the lettered text, especially if created using canvasing, IE, using the image and different parts of the screen as interactions for the program, rather than having the program write actual text to the screen, EG instead of writing the words "start game" in a game menu, having the developer just create a page in their favourite graphics development program with the words "start game" as an image, and having the game react when you click on that part of the screen. This is how a lot of games created with game maker work, and yeah, it's annoying. Whether screen reader ocr will get to a point where it can handle such things regularly enough to play games I'm not sure.

I'm pretty sure it didn't have combo attacks that you have to wait out, power attacks that you can't block so well, stuff like that. It definitely didn't have working magic, and I'm pretty sure you couldn't use your bow in combat. So it's definitely come along, for sure.

Part of it depends on the engine in which the game is constructed. I ran into plenty of text games on android that should have been playable, but aren't because the screen reader doesn't recognize the text in the engine. I would imagine that it is the same for all other platforms.

Hi,Holding down the space key moves the bike in the specified direction. Arrows are used to turn the bike in the directino you would like to go. For example, pressing Left arrow and then holding down space will turn your bike left, if it isn't already, and then it will begin to move you to the left. Same corresponds to the right arrow. Obviously you can't bike vertically, so Up and Down arrows do nothing. Hope this helps.

They plug into the IPhone's or IPad's lightning port and draw power from there. text-based games and screen readers

text-based games and screen readers

Hi all,Please hear me out here as I don't exactly know how to word this topic title.I'm asking, from a literal standpoint, what a text-based game is.Because, here's the thing.I am browsing Itch, and I'm noticing some really promising, so-called, text-based games. Yet, if these games are text, why can't a screen reader, a program literally designed for reading text, actually make head or tail of some of these? I've commented on several games now. So I'm asking: what is, a text-based game, and why can't screen readers, read all text-based games? What will it take to change this?

Re: pole, would you go for perpetual or subscription for software? Why?

Subscriptions can be good for some things. We've always had subscriptions for antivirus software so we can keep their databases updated. We have subscriptions for cloud storage and streaming services too. I'm okay with that model if something requires constant maintenance. When it comes to something like JAWS that doesn't exactly require constant maintenance, I keep my perpetual license. Why? Because at least with a perpetual license, I won't be stuck with 40 minute mode if I can't renew my SMA right away. That and the starting price for that license was a lot of money, and I don't want to just throw that away.that said, the home annual license is a great option for someone who can't afford that starting price for a perpetual license. It also gives you the ability to move authorization keys around. But as I said before, if you can't afford to renew it for some reason, you go back to 40 minute mode.As for Office, I chose the subscription model because the price of a retail version is insane, and I think you have to pay that price every time there's a new major version. That's unless there's some discount for upgrading from a previous one.

Introducing you to my antique clocks

Introducing you to my antique clocks

Hey everyone!Long time since I've posted on here it feels like... Audio gaming just isn't what it used to be nowadays, and since there isn't much I play anymore, I'm afraid I've become more of a listener than a talker, as it were. That said, I figured I'd share with you a recording I just made... A binaural tour of my six currently running antique clocks. I started developing an interest in chiming clocks about eight months ago now, and since then, I've started a surprisingly fast-growing collection of these fascinating mechanical time-keepers. Since I now have two thirds of this collection going strong, I thought I'd share some facts about them, as well as recording their ticking, and even some chiming. I'm hoping there are some of you on here that would get some enjoyment out of this recording. I'd love to hear from you if you have any thoughts, questions, or if there are others on here with an interest in old clocks. The recording can be found at:https://www.dropbox.com/s/mkz0d75gy4tvx … w.mp3?dl=0As this is a binaural recording, please listen to this through your favorite pair of headphones for best results. Otherwise, enjoy, and be well.

@192, that's well put, and exactly what I would've said. Blind jokes and tropes are funny to some blind people, horrible to some. There is a time and place for them, and if you're goin to throw in a blind comment or two, at least have more witty ones than have a listen around! I definitely agree that going out to a market which by and large has no context for these jokes, this is definitely on the horrible representation side of things. And thumbs up to everything else you said as well.

I also stand with Jayde and the moderator team. I think they are taking all the crap thrown at them very well, and I would not blame them if they decided this constant sniping by a couple people was almost akin to character assassination and just invoke the community failure clause. It's not just the attitudes to the mods though, it's the attitudes toward developers that has gone down hill as well. I'd like to say, "Most of these people who are doing it are just kids," but when I found this forum back in 2005, I was nineteen, I new how to talk to people with respect. To be fair, I didn't join the forum until a couple  years later, but I did like to read the topics and keep up on the news.In all my time I have not received a warning, a caution, or a ban of any kind. I don't really understand how hard it is for people to just think about what they write and how others will respond to it.Keep it up mods!

Re: The Vale (final?) Demo

2020-09-01 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — General Game Discussion : Jayde via Audiogames-reflector

Re: The Vale (final?) Demo

Exodus and Defender unintentionally unearthed my biggest problem with the "listen around" thing. So as blind folks, some of us care about this, some of us don't, and while it may be a bit cringe, it's also sort of a wash. Live with it.But this is also going out to sighted players. The kindest interpretation of "have a listen around" with no retort from Alex is that this is supposed to be funny, and no thought was given beyond this. However, the less charitable explanation suggests that this was not accidental. It's okay for sighted people playing the game to maybe expect that this represents real life in some way. God knows we already get shit like this. Perhaps it was someone's idea of a joke, but optics matter. This is why I think far greater research and inclusion was necessary pretty much from point 1. Now that'we are a year post first demo and we're in basically the same boat in a few key and critical areas, it's highlighting the various struggles this studio has had in trying to please its target market.Because here's the deal.A bopit-style fighter is still a bopit-style fighter, no matter how much window dressing you put on it. They've done a good job with it - better than others I could mention - but the core mechanics, for good or ill, are in place. This alone is not a death-knell by any stretch; I'd have hoped for better, but it is what it is.This may suggest to non-blind players that this sort of game is what blind folks like, want or expect, and as this forum will attest, this is manifestly not the case. We run a pretty good chance of being misrepresented by a group of developers who, so far as I am aware, are sighted. Isn't the world already full to bursting with groups outside of a given demographic purporting to speak for that demographic? Then you pile in some awkward dialogue. Some of it I'll just hand-wave, but the "have a listen around" thing falls flat. Again, it may not be intentional, but this is going to misrepresent us. Some blind folks don't care about jokes like this, or might even enjoy them. But I think most of us don't. If sighted folks play this game, get the idea that Falling Squirrel in any way represents normalcy among blind people because of its mechanics, its subject matter or other factors, then this type of humour is going to be portrayed as acceptable, more so when the main character makes absolutely no retort whatsoever and thus tacitly accepts the statement for what it is.I guess the stance I'm coming around to here is that I think Falling Squirrel is awfully nervy trying to make a game for the blind and sighted alike, with a blind protagonist, with tropes, without taking huge cues from a vital part of its player and research base. it feels pretty damned presumptive, honestly.I am still interested in the game, but if nothing else at all, I hope Falling Squirrel has learned a lot about optics, representation and the like for any future titles. If you want to represent a minority group, maybe get right in there and, y'know, talk with that minority group a bunch? Don't go in with assumptions, claim 80% of what you've built is inviolate due to time/code/budget limitations, end expect we'll forgive it without a qualm. The game still does many things right, and I think this is a recoverable lapse in judgment, but as I sit here writing this, I'm not at all happy with the way this has all been done.

I spoke too soon. I did seem to enable surround sound. Not sure why the exact same thing did nothing earlier, but it does switch between presets. I seem to have 5 profiles with maybe increasing amounts of bass, but I'm not entirely sure what the difference is. I don't yet have a decent sound source to test with.I'm probably not the best to compare setups, though. My actual surround system isn't super well installed. I put a couple screws at roughly the same height into the wall above my bed for the rear speakers, and used a metric arm-width to approximate the width. I also just got the Corsair working, and am looking for good games to test it out with. Sorry, if I have any definitive comparisons then I'll check in. I'll certainly give it a shot with Onslaught once I get that working in the Windows dev environment.

Re: Code Dungeon - A FREE hack & slash dungeon crawler

Just got a chance to try this out and it really is pretty neat. Haven't spent a huge amount of time with it, but you're onto something with this. One bit of feedback: Any chance for an audio glossary, "learn sounds" menu, etc.? The tutorial is nice, but when I read a game message telling me that open spaces sound different, it can be a bit difficult to tell those specific sounds from others. So being able to experience them in isolation would be helpful. Thanks for all your work, and I agree with folks who tell you that you shouldn't apologize for your bugs. You *could* be making an inaccessible game, but you're busting your ass to make it playable by us. So thanks for that, and give yourself a break.

@NevEd, That, and you're missing out on force-feedback potentially, or the whole thing feels so light, cheap and plastic! For an old one I tried, some of the plastic cuts felt especially cheap and sharp, and the face buttons needed to be pushed with so much force, it was almost impossible to press multiple comfortably!

Re: Good, moderate to low priced controller that works with Windows?

the 8Bitdo SF30 PRO is good if you want a tiny, wireless controller with a built in battery that will do multiple modes. It just looks like a snes controller that's managed to sprout dual analogue sticks and a set of shoulder triggers. When you connect it up to windows it just acts as a standard xinput controller by default, but can be switched to dinput if you need to.The down side is that because it's so small, rumble isn't particularly powerful on it and battery life is  shorter than an xbox controller running on AA batteries. It still beats a ps4 controller though. This is assuming that the xbox controller falls into the unreasonably priced category, if it doesn't then it is the best controller and you should go for that one.

Re: Corsair Void Pro headset, Windows, and accessibility

yes, when the headset is connected to the computer and iCue is running, you should hear voice prompts for certain actions. It will say surround on or something. Just pressing the button will cycle through 5 EQ presets. If you do that and hear a sort of double beep, it's not connected to the actual software. You should also hear voice prompts for moving the mic boom into position. If you hear only a series of beeps either ascending or descending, again, it's not picking up the software. Also, even though when you turn it on, it will grab the audio right away, it will say powering on when it connects with the software.Sometimes it doesn't pick up the software right away, and sometimes it doesn't do it at all. If it doesn't do it at all, I'd recommend unplugging then reconnecting the dongle.

Just get the Xbox 1 controller. It's really good and doesn't do the jittery bull dink that the cheaper ones do. It can work through Bluetooth or hooked up through USB. If you have dead batteries, you can just plug it in and play. The only downside is deciding what to do about batteries since they're not built in. I got some rechargeable  ones at 2K mAh which work well. The play 'n charge kit or whatever it's called I think is only 1100maH which wouldn't get you as far.

Agree with you there. However if there is a perpetual option i'll go for it 99.9percent of the time. Kinda still want to turn this into a poll though, not sure how.
