Re: Non-religion specific prayers

Draq opined:  "Religions that involve the worship of a deity seem to attempt to serve two basic functions. The first is explaining where we all came from and why we're here. As far as the Abrahamic religions go, those teach us that we were created by God to serve God, more or less. Science and religion have always been at odds about this."See, again, it would help if you knew what you were talking about. Science and religion really haven't been "at odds" until the latter half of the 1800s, and then largely in America. The idea comes largely from two books, one put out in 1874 and the other in 1896. The latter book popularized the idea that before Columbus, everybody thought the earth was flat and that the idea that the earth was round was opposed by the Catholic Church.A passing acquaintance with history would demonstrate the falseness of this claim. The ancient Greeks knew that the earth was round and gave several proofs, and from approximately 1000 CE onward, the church incorporated Greek philosophy, courtesy of the Islamic world which preserved quite a bit of it lost to the Christian world.Later, in the early 1900s, a segment of American Christianity vehemently reacted to what it saw as attacks on it by the modern world, culminating in the publication of a set of books called "The Fundamentals" between 1910-1915. Many ideas about the end of the world, e.g. the rapture, also came about around this time. My point is, these are not very old ideas, considering the entire history of Western science and Christianity."The second is probably going to ruffle some feathers and step on some toes, but I have a suspicion that a lot of these religions were created to control the masses. What better way to keep people in line than to convince them that an all powerful, Omnipotent being will punish them if they do something wrong, and that if they don't believe in this being that they'll go to some place of eternal torment when they die?Religions can have some good aspects such as teaching morality and giving people a sense of purpose as well, but the above are the two main things I've identified."Again, that's because you have no idea of what you're talking about. There are about two or three religions in the world with an omnipotent god. They are Christianity, Islam, and Sikhism. Possibly Baha'i has one as well, but it's been a while since I've done any reading in Baha'i. Some forms of Hinduism can be said to as well, e.g. Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita, but considering that in Arjuna's vision of Krishna Arjuna is told that since Krishna is essentially everything/everywhere even Krishna's enemies end up at Krishna in the end, it can hardly be said that Krishna, if we're considering him to be an omnipotent god, is condemning people to a place of punishment, eternal or otherwise.Christianity and Islam both have places of punishment, I forget if Islam's is eternal but it's probably a safe assumption. That's two religions, in the whole history of religions that we know about, which covers some five thousand years, that work in the way you've described. Actually, I'll tell you what. Let me be nice to you. Let's assume Baha'i works that way too. Then we'll throw in Zoroastrianism, because even though it's kind of polytheistic, it does have a ruling god and it does have a place of punishment, and I think some writings even consider it to be eternal. I totally forget how Jainism works, so let's give you that one too, just for the hell of it, pun intended. We're up to five whole religions, and I'm being really generous to you here, that work in the manner you describe, i.e. an omnipotent god who will punish you eternally. So let's start looking at some other modern religions that don't work like this at all. Confucianism, Daoism, Shinto, all forms of Buddhism, most forms of Hinduism, pretty much any indigenous religion I've ever read about which covers huge chunks of the world including all of North and South America, Africa, Oceania (Australia, Polynesia, Melanesia, Micronesia and so on), and large parts of Asia. Basically find a people still practicing their indigenous religion, and you don't have any of this.Moving right along, if we consider historical religions, you're up to five and a half, because in ancient Egyptian religion you could be eaten by something called Amemet, which devoured you if you didn't live according to Maat, truth, righteousness, law. That's assuming you got to go through the whole post-death ordeal for a shot at eternal life. That's not eternal punishment, but I'll grant you that having your soul devoured, so to speak, is pretty final, if not eternal, and it's certainly a punishment.Other than that? Sorry my friend. I've already covered the Sumerians in a previous post, ditto the Akkadians (Babylonians) and Assyrians (pretty much the same theology as the Akkadians). I've also covered the ancient Hebrews. I'm not super up on what happened to people in

Re: Awakened Worlds, Community Edition, is here!

So here's the thing.I've been following this MUD for years now. I think it's interesting because I used to play on the original (as Tomi there too) back when Che was running the thing. Pretty cool. I even spoke to him about compiling it under Cygwin back when I was a teenager. Oh how fun. Then in 2016 I moved to Seattle and I was like, holy crappers, I'm living in the world of this MUD! I really was, the map layout is fairly exact to Seattle but with some changes as it is to be expected.I'm a big fan. Recently I got the community edition to compile on a Raspberry pi. How fun. I like being a wizard of the world now. I can do anything. Lately I've been having fun making the elementals fight each other out of boredem. So fun!I don't understand how the community edition was changed over the regular. I also see very little wizhelp documentation. Like the illusive reboot command. Reboot all works but what other parameters does it take? I may have to ask an actual God upon my death to ever find out. Poor documentation on building and creating your own things had lead me to abandon it for a while. I want to introduce weed as a good drug, not as a bad drug, for example. Making weed shops like it is in Seattle? Hell yes. That is something I think the original game makers just didn't think of would be a reality when they built it. So making it more in line with present and extending that concept to the future in a greater way would make this game more complete for me. Until then I lurk around and build source every once in awhile.

Re: An inquiry about Mathematics courses and Braille

I like what I've read so far, and as a person who has completed the calc track for a CS degree, here's what I'll say:If you can help it, get Braille for everything (assuming you're highly proficient at it). I got all my Calc books in Braille, and it helped tremendously when it came to drilling problems. Even try to get your exams in Braille, although I didn't do this.I worked with a scribe who was also a senior mathematics major. He used the Draftsman to delineate graphics to me.Above mentioned scribe was also my notetaker. He was quite familiar with LaTeX and would author his notes ultimately in a simple Tex file. I would then use Duxbury to translate into Braille which worked flawlessly. I then used my Braille display to read all of his notes. As far as output, he quite literally was the ultimate scribe. If I could either describe to him the shapes I wanted him to draw, or if I could draw a simple sketch on the Draftsman, he would just draw it on regular paper that would eventually be handed into the professor. The same goes for my mathematical work. I would do the work on my Braille display and then tell him my work.I found this to be the smoothest workflow in my undergraduate course load. I got an A in Calc 1 and an A+ in Calc 2 where the overall average grade in the latter was somewhere around a 65-70%. It was precisely because of having access to someone who knew their stuff really well that I was able to avoid the burden of learning the discipline and patience for reading and writing the math on my own. It's taxing, stressful, and has the potential to deeply interfere with the learning process. I have done very well in math because I was so focused on the material. Now, others have found workflows that seemed to have worked, so I'm not contending the "highway or my way" nonsense, but if it is possible, try to find someone (in college) who knows their stuff at an A+ level. As far as high school, I can't really offer much in the way of good advice. You're already ahead of the game in that regard, but I fear high schools lack the same amount of resources to ensure great success for blind students in STEM subjects, and this is where enrolling at a proper university would be of great benefit, so I do apologize for neglecting to offer direct advice to your College Board and other current testing issues.

If possible, we may use such an option.I plan to start at the beginning of February, though if anyone wants me to start earlier or later, I am definitely open to discussion.also, remember that this is my first time doing this, and I might make mistakes.a few more things, first, I don't plan for there to be a prize for the winner.second, I would prefer if you didn't post your scores in the topic when the tournament starts.third, I would appreciate any feedback about my idea.please post here about whether or not you think this is a good idea.

Re: Non-religion specific prayers

@16, yeah. Such a huge elephant. It was written for me, since you asked, but not because I struggle with saying the correct things, its not that I can't choose my words correctly. Its just when I'm at a computer I struggle to convay the right messages over text. And nextly, The reason I'm generally so rough is well, I view the internet through a sorta hood lense. Where you gotta be tough to survive. IMO, religion isn't just one ideal we can follow and believe. Its not one god did this and one god did that. I'm of the opinion that there is a god as I said, however spirituality shouldn't depend on that one god. The ansestors, nature and other forces play a role in our lives. Karma is an angry elephant with a sledge hammer with a superpowered suit waiting to smash you right in the testicles. And the values of respect, equality, love and peace are important to having a fulfiling and happy life. It isn't just god or mother Lutchmi or whatever, its a balance of all their ideals and teachings. Nobody can say for sure how the universe was created or what will happen to us after we die, however looking at different religions and teachings can help us better understand and craft our own opinions. That's why I dislike people who force their religion down your throat. That's why I respect nocturnous. Even though he's a proud Christian he doesn't take every chance he gets to convert everyone. I'll get the prayer for y'all tomorrow, so you can read it yourselves. Oh, and one more thing before I leaveI was on YouTube the other day, and I saw a video titled the Caribbean accent. OK< I thought there is no such thing, but lets look at it. He mostly talks about the Guyanese accent, but tat's not the part that's worth telling about, its the part in the end where he says that the Guyanese accent, and by at large the English Creoles of the Caribbean is unrepresentitive of Jesus Christ therefore his American tongue was better for teaching about Mormanism. I got pretty pissed because its not like its a far away people speaking a far away language worshipping a far away god. Its literally the same language and same god. And while I do understand that not all people are hypocrits like that, it can be totally discouraging to have your variant of a language labelled heathenistic, and that sorta judgementalism for many yis a reason why they turned away from the church and religion in general. Take what you wish from that little rant of mine.

From what I heard in the Blind Bargains podcast that talked about it, it can't even go on the Play Store. Got to agree with 3 on this one. I honestly believe that they may actually care. However, if we show disinterest, they will most likely move on. This could possibly be the perfect chance to get something like harthstone to be playable. I don't know about you, but I think that'd be awesome! I'm glad to see that it wasn't just a one-time update to patch in accessibility. I'm extremely hopeful for the future and I think that this could be a great opportunity. Let's just hope that we don't drive them off like we did with EA...

Re: Non-religion specific prayers

Religions that involve the worship of a deity seem to attempt to serve two basic functions. The first is explaining where we all came from and why we're here. As far as the Abrahamic religions go, those teach us that we were created by God to serve God, more or less. Science and religion have always been at odds about this. The second is probably going to ruffle some feathers and step on some toes, but I have a suspicion that a lot of these religions were created to control the masses. What better way to keep people in line than to convince them that an all powerful, Omnipotent being will punish them if they do something wrong, and that if they don't believe in this being that they'll go to some place of eternal torment when they die?Religions can have some good aspects such as teaching morality and giving people a sense of purpose as well, but the above are the two main things I've identified.

Re: Audio Gaming in Linux and Mac - audiogame-managerhhh

The latest Survive the Wild is now a zip file, which is good news for audiogame-manager. The installer has changed to reflect this, so probably the best thing to do is remove the old version using:audiogame-manager -rThen, reinstall it. Note that this will become available in the next release, probably on Sunday. Until then, new installations will fail because the old installer file used by audiogame-manager is no longer available.Patrons with access to the source code can access the new version in the testing branch. So far everything is going ok, so the binary release is on schedule.

The master replies, "whoever said that was very close to Buddha". Then there are some more words, and the master said that whoever said that was enlightened. I want to say it was the Sermon on the Mount, but I'm not sure. If I can remember where it is I can find it and post it.Cheese:Ah, we're probably thinking along similar lines then. I honestly don't know what people are doing in a religion, or anything like it, if they haven't had some sort of experience. I mean, I'm pretty broad-minded on what constitutes an experience, but still, it would just seem weird to me to be doing something and have no real connection to it.

Re: Blind humans and living situations?

I live alone. Own the property (before this sounds impressive, it's the sort of property where, if I sold it, I might be able to afford two Braille displays.). Were it better insulated and I didn't have college debt, and if I actually put in the effort to eat as cheaply as possible, I might-might could manage on SSI. I don't know how people who have to pay rent can manage on SSI, unless they're in the most energy-efficient walled box ever, and subsist entirely on Peanut Butter and Rice. (Note to self: look up fun things to make from Peanut Butter and Rice.)Anyway, working now, make not-quite twice SSI. Owe money to the SSA because I was misled about reporting the property to the SSA while I was in college and still listed living with my parents, so between that, student debt, and utilities, that's about half my paycheck gone immediately. The other half was allowed to build up until I could get someone to work on the house, and that was most of my savings gone. So the past two years ... I think that's what they call "the rat race"?Also, spent time here before employment, when was just getting SSI. I really don't think doubling what I was getting would have helped. Like, I can't think of anything where I went "awe, man, the quality of my life would be so much better if I had managed to save like a grand for this one thing." Maybe if I'd tried shopping for used Braille displays instead of only ever looking at wholesale prices? Maybe I'd've had enough money to hire a sound designer for , but I don't think I could have saved enough to fund a whole decent project even by now, that way. At best, I could have made those repairs sooner (OK, that one would have made a substantial difference).(I do want a raise, though. Half our workforce quit last year, and the half that remains has been having to do all the work for several months. Like, the whole department needs a raise, or a huge bonus, or something like that, which the State will never sign off on. And it's state-funded, so there's rules and bureaucracy and stuff, so I can't just walk up to my boss's boss's boss and tell them this parenthetical, increasingly huffily, and expect results.)

lazy fuckers, should have considered that before producing thousands or hundreds and assigning a 4000 dollar price tag. Also that's common sense. Newer version= more apps. I mean seriously, if your os version is over 2 or years old, it is outdated. And that's fine if you are a consumer buying something like a phone, because there are many different phones to choose from, and you can choose to buy one that supports later software. But with this, no choice to upgrade, and no other devices to buy with android. Well now there is the braille sense, but again, only 2 options.

The real elephant in the room is @OP giving a prayer, religious or not. While some might use carefully chosen words, a suitable metaphor being butterflies carrying a scroll atop a soft pillow. he is like swinging a sledge hammer, and, as if that weren't enough, with the assistance of a full suit of power armor to help deliver the blow more forcefully. My spirituality is something I don't entirely understand. I do know that my native blood comes out at times though. Nature is a big part of it, and being among nature is really the only way I ever feel at peace. I don't believe in a single god, or really multiple gods unless you count every element in nature as being a deity. I see the power behind things, and when they come together, they form beautiful patterns.I would say the closest I've ever come to a religious experience happened on frigging teamtalk of all places. I was attempting to do Tuvan throat singing, and not very good. It sort of morphed into a chant of sorts, and I remember others sort of joining in. It all came to a peak and I just felt this sense of power rushing through me. It was a flash of a thing, very fleeting, and then it was gone. I've been looking for ways to get that back. If only to study it, learn from it, know more about what happened in that moment.

Re: Non-religion specific prayers

here's a thing. Out of all the religions I've examined, only Buddhism seems to have made social equality, generosity and morality a foundation of life and the whole path in general. and let's not forget to mention the development of 4 great immeasurable attitudes lovingkindness, compassion, empathetic joy, and equanimity. that... happened without an actual belief in a supreme Creator still boggles my mind sometimes. you don't need to believe in a god to be good, or even next world to be good. see it this way.  belief in an other world is meaningless, although the work of Ian Stevenson and Jim Tucker is very, very convincing in it's scope. if you're good to yourself and others, you enjoy a clear conscience here-and-now. if you observe how the world in the experience works, you see there are causes, and effects, there are multitudes of causes intersecting at  a single point in time to produce an effect. so if there's an afterlife, or rebirth, or whatever that may be, you won't go to  a bad place[whatever that may be]. if there isn't, you still enjoy a wonderful abiding here-and-now. this is highly practical and empirically verifiable. you *don't need a god* to be spiritual. you *don't need to be religious* to have realization. all religions are like chains, I'd say. although Buddhistic worldview resounds profoundly with me, because of it's rationalistic nature, I don't let it turn into a chain of sorts and still am able to implement the principals and perceive very deep changes in myself. the path is supposed to be come-and-see, not based on blind dogma, after all. to me, something which gives instant results is way better than, say, something which offers me salvation after death, especially when I don't even know what lies afterwards. And this could actually be a wonderful exercise. The development of 4 sublime attitudes does not require any beliefs and is highly nonsectarian in nature. And the moment you implement any of those you actually feel a warmth and a subtle joy spreading and permeating your whole being. So if you're looking for nonreligious prayers, you should consider trying to develop the 4 sublime attitudes for the whole world without exception. That actually takes immense courage to be done, especially when you get to the people who have harmed you  in some way or the other.

Awakened Worlds, Community Edition, is here!

This is too awesome for me to explain it, so I'll let this Reddit thread do it for me.The year is 2064, and the world has been reforged in the fires of magic, technology, and greed. Orks, Trolls, Elves, and other races straight out of fantasy roam the streets, along with new and unfamiliar mutations inflicted on the populace in a traumatic event known as the SURGE. Cybernetic implants and arcane workings grant incredible power to those who can afford to wield them, and information– the most valuable resource in 2064– is stolen and traded by expert hackers with homemade VR rigs. Dominating this landscape are the mega-corporations, wielding nigh-limitless political clout and conducting shadow wars while an unsuspecting populace happily consumes their products. Do you have what it takes to survive in the cutthroat Sprawl?Hoi, chummers! After four years of development, the Community Edition of Awakened Worlds is finally opening its doors to the public, and it's the perfect time to get in on the ground floor. Re: An inquiry about Mathematics courses and Braille

No, the paper doesn't come with grids.  But it does come with a ruler that clips onto the side so you can just draw your own.Depending on what you need, you can often just draw a grid yourself by drawing the two axis and using your thumb to put ticks along them to mark off the coordinates.  I was told that most sighted students do that.  But you can also get a lame but good enough grid by just freehand sketching it out...yeah maybe all the squares aren't the same size but what matters is that it's just vaguely close and they can tell if your answer is right.Laptops in school are what they are.  I wish I could say that schools are unjustified in being skittish about giving students laptops, and it's a shame that they're applying that to us, but give a high school student a laptop at a school which probably doesn't know what a secure network is if not having one fucked them over, and bad things can happen.  I knew someone in high school who could get admin on the library computers with a batch file on a thumbdrive, so.

No error in communication. I was just giving advice as I have taken high level math courses in college. And also, might serve as some pointers of when indeed you do end up in college. I'm not sure where you are located, but in my response, I pointed to the fact that, at least in the US, you should have a much easier time getting access to Braille material in k-12 public schooling. That still doesn't make the subjects easier by any means. However, if you have access to teachers of the visually impaired or something similar, you can certainly talk to them about your options.I feel my techniques for graphs are still applicable. Buying a draftsman and graph paper are still a good way to go. I also had an Orion TI-84 Plus with the talking module, which can provide some assistance such as telling you intercepts, stats evaluations, etc. Also, getting ahead of your class does wonders sometimes. I know it takes effort, but reading from free textbooks like the ones on openstax, and familiarizing yourself with notation, even with a Braille display if you have one, will help you minimize challenges in understanding when the time comes around in dealing with the material. And another tip, I found that watching videos on Khan Academy helped solidify understanding of things. Just listening to them will help a little. And I hope you have access to Nemeth Braille material. Because UEB Math Braille is not so great. I co-authored a CSUN paper with some justifications from a Computer Science perspective on that topic with respect to developing mathematical software that supports Braille IO.

Re: An inquiry about Mathematics courses and Braille

I mean, look at this the other way.  The reason we all thought you were in college is that most high school students don't take Calculus in high school, at least in America (which is where I assume you are).  SO even if this fails utterly you're already ahead of most.  You can probably make all of this work out, at least for the math stuff, though idk about coding in braille.  You've probably got access to people who know the Nemeth you need to learn, so it is likely at least practical. The Draftsman is amazing.  The only downside is that the paper is expensive and not reusable.  Something like $7 for 25 sheets, so not terrible, but you won't want to waste it.  You set it up and draw on it with the stylus that comes with it or even a regular pencil, and raised lines happen.  It's enough that I was graphing trigonometry homework in high school as fast as sighted students.  It doesn't do the weird "actually the graph is on the other side of the paper and you can't see it until you're done" thing.  The graphs are more durable than braille, while being about the same quality.  They feel a little bit like those plastic graphs from textbooks.  I've used it for calculus stuff, physics stuff, all sorts of things.  I discovered it because the high school was using it to teach other students handwriting.  It's even sensitive to pressure, in the sense that if you press lightly you get lighter/thinner lines, so you can literally even shade with it.

Marvel Studios new series WondaVision discussion

Marvel Studios new series WondaVision discussion

Hi,WondaVision is going to be the series that will kick off phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.I've seen the first two episodes on DisneyPlus. The series has audio description.Keep in mind, at least for the moment it is a different kind of series. We are definitely in it for the long hall.As for what this is, well... I don't exactly know how to describe it. For the most part, believe it or not, a sitcom, retro, on purpose. The audio presentation is really good. When I say retro I really mean it, I don't want to say everything though. I laughed a lot more than I was expecting. It's cheasey but there is also, definitely, something wrong. To me, the best way I can explain this is, you need to think of this series like giant jenga. Jenga is a physical game with a tower that you start building. But as you add to it, it gets unstable and it's only a matter of time before some sort of action is going to knock it down. Well, this series feels like that, completely on purpose. There are layers that are there, you think you know what they are... but there's... cracks that are showing, and it's only a matter of time before the tower is going to fall and who knows what it is going to reveal fully when it does.

Re: Non-religion specific prayers

OK. Where do I start?"Example: Pantheism has formed more religions than any other world system of religiosity and continues to add gods faster than I can learn about them."Pantheism doesn't form anything. Pantheism means that God is in everything, or put another way, that everything is part of God. So already, you're wrong. As far as more gods being added than you can learn about, got any examples? Or do you just mean there are a lot of religions and/or gods in the world, and so you've given up on trying to learn about them?"Whatever you think about eastern world mysticism, whether you're the one with the universe type or you actually subscribe to one of scores of gods, not all of them believe the same exact thing fundamentally.""eastern world mysticism" huh? Man, you've really truly studied things I see. I'm sorry, since you're apparently treating every other religion besides whatever version of Christianity you subscribe as a mass of interchangeable "eastern world mysticism", I don't think that really requires a response from me."Meanwhile, in the western world, the question isn't one about which god to follow, but if god even exists."Riiight. Because there are no Buddhists, various forms of neopagans, the various new age religious movements, just as a few examples, all over the Western world. Nope, it's all whether the Christian god exists or not. Dude, you should maybe rethink this conversation."The atheist believes he does not.  The theist believes he does."This is the first sensible thing you've said."The common basis of the general theist revolves on 4 simple words, 4 words the atheists opposes.  those words are, "In the beginning, God."If the atheists opposes those four words and the theist believes in them, the question then becomes, how do you consolidate both as true?"Well, and I'm assuming the first half of this quote about Genesis is correct for the sake of argument, you don't. But see, this is foundationalism again. You want to have a fight, so you set this thing up where one thing has to be right, and one thing has to be wrong. Who cares? If you've found "in the beginning, God" to be true, that's great. It's got nothing to do with me, as far as I can tell, but maybe that's just because I follow some form of "eastern world mysticism" and I can't think properly or something.Because you think truth needs to be universal and foundational, you assume there has to be a fight, either A or B is true. But again, I point to a net. If the net is mostly round, that is the pattern of holes is round, does it matter that some holes in that section over there are diamond-shaped? If the net can work with multiple hole shapes, in other words be made up of different patterns of weaving and still function as a net, well there you go. The problem isn't solved, because the problem doesn't even exist.

Re: An inquiry about Mathematics courses and Braille

I appreciate the advice given here, but it seems like we have an error in communication. I am still in high school. I will take Physics C and Calc BC in high school. The tests will not be graded by my teachers, rather, sent off to some automated center for the MCQ (multiple choice questions) and graded by human graders with rubrics that literally say "Add 1 point for using an integral function." "add 1 point only if the curve on the graph reflects the ratio of acceleration to time." It's very specific. Even if they see something like int(a, b, function), and even if they know that it probably means integral, the key word here is probably. I also, like I said, have no clew on if they would require me to draw a graph. The day to day lessons I have no issues with, I commonly use shorthand do to being restricted to braille (my Braillesense conveniently doesn't support Nemyth even if it was advertised by Hims), but I have no powers of negotiation with the college board. It's like the SAT but worse if anyone remembers that.I suppose I could just take the course, but then I'd just have to sit through Calculous my freshmen year in college and be bored out of my mind... again. Not that I am complaining, okay I am, but I would hate to be locked out of an opportunity to get ahead only because I'm blind and cannot conform to the sheer idiocy of the rules.I don't actually have an account on Wickipedia, guess it's time to make one. That wouldn't solve my high school issues, though, College Board currently has not approved me using a laptop for their exams. Even if they do, there comes that tiny concern of how would they do math (if it's anything like the SAT, it's going to be in a word file). So, it's probably going to work with NVDA? Probably? It always seems to go wrong though, so who knows.@camlorn, mind expanding on the Draftsman, its uses, limitations, etc?

Re: A concern over Facebook's new privacy policy for What'sApp Users.

The current  system of SSN security is really  terrible imho. Since all that is linked to your credit report, anyone who knows it will be able to open cards in your name, and  apply for lones etc. I could give you my Turkish ID number, and you wouldn't be able to do anything at all with it, as it is always used in conjunction with a password, such as an e-government password. I remember though before the chipped IDs, in Turkey, there was a law where if you dropped or lost your ID, you had to publish a notice in any newspaper that gave your name, and said something to the effect of, I have lost my ID, it is legally null and void. If you  didn't do this, you were legally required to pay any debts that the person who found your ID racked up. And they could do anything with that ID, encluding founding a company, opening an account and taking out lones.

Re: An inquiry about Mathematics courses and Braille

You don't use Mathplayer with LaTeX much.  Mathplayer barely works on high level math content, nevermind if you're in one of the large minority of people for whom installing it doesn't work. You can learn LaTeX just by reading examples, e.g. anything math on Wikipedia if you log in and change the renderer in the settings.  I knew LaTeX as that Wikipedia math thing before I even knew it had a name.  The way I did it was to use Mathtype with Word, normal word stuff for anything not math, LaTeX snippets inline for math with mathtype converting them.  But learning to typeset properly isn't that much harder.

Re: An inquiry about Mathematics courses and Braille

Yeah, I will be facing such things soon, very soon indeed. I have known I'll be doing a cs degree for a very long time, since highschool I'd say. However, I kind of postponed this untill the last moment, since I DK even now how to approach it. So, where can I learn latex? Is it as long and verbose as I herd it is? If so, how do or did you guys manage to complete the exams in time since it's so tedious to write by hand? or do you have something like autocomplete in vs or some excel like functions and templates to generate a good amount of the most verbose parts? lastly, how do you read it? I know you use mathplayer, sure, but can it interpret latex, or should I convert it to math ml? Lastly, I herd mathplayer has some problems with installing and uninstalling it, some com component isn't deregistered and the registry key can then be used as a backdoor by malware. Is this correct? and isn't mathtype paid, aren't equations hard to write in word as well, maybe even harder than latex?Unfortunately, braille in math isn't an option for me, as the tutors in primary school didn't teach us enough of it. I went to a mainstream school since fifth grade, so that's why I only use braille for ordinary text and only when I feel like it, I prefer speech over anything else tbh. You know, it'd be quite a shame if I couldn't take the cs degree due to these things, as I was and still am particularely good at math in highschool. Now, luckily for me, I don't want to follow the electrics and stuff, since I am going for a math/informatics profile anyway, though there are still accessibility problems I am furiously thinking how to solve. So, in my country, we blind or in any other way disabled people don't have as many rights as in the USA, and here were you USA guys claiming it's hard for you, just live here for a month, and you'll desperately want your accessibility things back, never ever saying they're too expensive, that people don't do enough just the bare minimum to pass by that law, and never, never that you really have it hard. So, to clear things up, we have some rights, but due to the way they're implemented and some other factors that'd rather belong to the society, they aren't ever truely useful. For example, we get a kind of ssi too, but it's petifully small...like, it isn't quite enough to pay ones bills for the month with it, needless to speak about food and stuff. Why it happens, I DK, but it's weird...I actually do kind of have my own view about why this is how it is, but I am not gonna go into politics here, so suffice it to say it's obscure.Next, almost nothing is paid by the state, not even jaws for those who still use it.Furthermore, there is no accessibility policy thing like in the usa, telling app makers who sell to the state to make their thing accessible. So, if my online school works with software that has some accessibility pieces by accident and not design, I could well sue them and be as likely to winn as lose. There are some rules about accessibility here, like materials need to be adapted according to the person's dissability, but they're so loosly written and they leave plenty places a bit open to interpretation imho.Well, another thing would be to make reasonable conversation with those leading the college I want to go to in advance, and that's what I did. However, I got a response like we've never had blind people here and blah...blah...blah. Then, they said they don't have any special tools or whatever to work with the blind at all, and that I can go, but they can't guarantee I would have good accessibility. Then, when I tried explaining, like a reasonable man in normal conversation, that they won't have to do many things, just give me some understanding regarding, for example, the time limit for exams, the fakt I need a comp equipped with a synth in the lab or to be able to bring my own computer, or that if this isn't possible, to let me record the lectures, I even suggested it would be good if they could give me the latex sources of courses with math, so that I could understand them better and at my own pase. I got some let's call them no, get away... kind of answers. For example, they invoked the privacy protection and data blah blah blah eu legislation about recording, saying that all teachers I want to record must agree with it, and somehow implying that they won't, or is this only me? Next, they said they can't be sure the nvda or any other such program doesn't have some viruses or spying backdoors or whatever in them, and going as far as to suggest I could use those backdoors my self to give me some advantages and shit. Then, about my comp in the lab, they said something about security and that they can't really let a non-institution provided comp connect to their software and networks because it might open them to volnerabilities. OK, I might agree with them on the last one, but seriously, how the hell can one think assistive

Re: Introducing an accessible graph viewr for the web

This is interesting and comprehensible for at least small examples.  I will have to play with the larger graph at some point to see how well it scales up.  Two things:Having to press enter in order to expand what you're calling subgraphs is annoying and it seems that the table is always two columns.  Why not let right arrow expand indefinitely?  Right arrow on a node moves to the edges, right arrow on an edge moves to the target of the edge, left arrow takes you "back".The left "column" which is always only one node seems superfluous.  It feels like down arrow should do something there.  I imagine that if right arrow always expanded then that would go away because left arrow always takes you back to where you were.  Maybe I missed something and that's not always one column. It feels sort of  like a treeview but with a bunch of extra levels for no particular reason, if that makes sense.

He who does not coincide with anything will not coincide more with himself either: hence the calls without faith, the hesitant convictions, the fever without fervor, that doubling which affects our ideas and even our reflexes. The ambiguity, which governs all our relations with this world and the next, we keep at first for ourselves; then I spread it around, so that no one would escape, so that no one would know what to expect. There is nothing clear anywhere: it is our fault that things themselves are faltering and perplexed. We should have the faculty — indispensable to one who seeks salvation — to believe that prayer is possible. Hell is when prayer becomes inconceivable.Establishing a universal ambiguity is our most disastrous feat and makes us rivals of the demiurge.
