Re: how do online multiplayer games work?

2021-01-22 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Developers room : magurp244 via Audiogames-reflector

Re: how do online multiplayer games work?

It depends, specifically it depends on the style of gameplay your going for and how often it needs to calculate changes in state, or how much the server controls vs the client. For the most part you seem familiar with the types of data and updating, so let me elaborate a bit.For the sake of argument, lets say were working with an RTS. Now in an RTS there are a lot of units and events happening simultaneously, so much in fact that it would be impractical for a centralized server to update every unit action across multiple players. So in this case they use whats referred to as Asynchronous Lockstep. What this means is that each machine will hold a simulation of the game on each of the clients, and pass only those things that effect the state of that simulation, for example just clicks or actions by each player. When all the mouse clicks or actions have been received each "cycle", their entered in the simulation, and the next cycle continues. To make use each simulation stays in sync across multiple clients, they use a sudo-random number, that is a random seed that spits out the same sequence of random numbers every time on each machine to remain deterministic throughout the simulation. Now in the case of a FPS, where each player is an independent entity and thats all each player controls, you can get away with an authoritative server model where the server receives player input. Because of the pace of each game, the time it takes for a server to sent input can take time, so they employ something called "client side prediction", where the game keeps running even if you haven't received an update from the server and "predicts" whats going to happen to maintain the illusion that the game is running smooth. When the packet from the server arrives, it "corrects" any deviations that the client may have made in trying to predict what would happen. Players can often see this as jittering or teleportation with lag in such games.Something very important to keep in mind what it comes to network design, is to never, ever trust the client with game state data. DO NOT ever send things like the players position, health, or damage across the network, because if you do it runs the very real risk that people will spoof the packets to change the games state in unintended ways. Examples of this could be infinite health, speed hacks, teleporting, instant kills, etc.

Interestingly though, bleach only stays effective for a couple of hours, so you need to mix a new batch each time.  It's shocking how many people don't know this especially during Covid, including me as I only learned it a week ago.But yeah, air tight and away from sunlight is probably your best bet with most of these things, and the manufacturer website or cleaning blogs will probably have some good advice too.

Yeah, the mainstream VI gaming community isn't great at supporting newbies.  I think it's a combination of A. not wanting to deal with the blindy community after they've been distancing them selves successfully for so long and probably don't want to come back and B. because it's frankly hard to explain allot of this stuff if you aren't in person and most people who ask probably only show a small amount of interest so the time VS reward ratio isn't worth it for them. That's just my read on it though,, I could be missing something.

Re: Gamings Computer Question

I don't know what the price is, so I can't make a guess on whether you are getting your money's worth or not here, but that all looks quite good!  Hell I'd even say that the GPU may be a bit overkill for the kinds of games you'll probably be playing, but their is nothing wrong with futureproofing.I notice that the battery isn't amazing, and it's only going to get worse over time, though thankfully it's almost certainly replaceable and it's a common issue with gaming laptops that isn't as bad if you're fully blind and turn the screen brightness to 0 99% of the time. The SSD is far too small for more than a few mainstream games though, or really much of anything videos wise like TV or movies.  I assume you are planning on putting another drive in their as well? It's very likely that their will be at least one free bay as it's a gaming laptop, but you may want to find out if it's got a free SATA bay or only M2 slots. Also, if you go with a standard HDD for your expanded storage, games are going to load and save quite slowly, so expect to shell out a couple hundred if you want a good sized SSD instead, depending of course on how much stuff you want to put on it and whether or not you have to go with the more expensive (but ultra fast) M2 SSD's.Not having WiFi 6 support is a bit of a bummer, as we are already getting into WiFi 6E soon which means that you will be 2 generations behind in a year or so.  However, it is important to note that WiFi6 and 6E are almost exclusively about improving signal quality and network capacity in crowded areas, rather than speed improvements. Also, since you can access the WiFi card on this model, you may well be able to upgrade it in future.Maintenance isn't as easy as some gaming laptops, as it uses lots of plastic clips and screws, but it is still certainly possible if you are careful or have a professional do it, and loads better than most other non gaming laptop types. Here are a couple good in depth reviews I found.https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-Le … 271.0.htmlhttps://laptopmedia.com/review/lenovo-l … isappoint/

As far as the accessibility goes though, I’m not sure if there is any. I just learned that I need to get a micro HDMI cable for my pie, so I will have to do that and then get cited assistance to help me go through the menus. If there is accessibility on it, I will definitely let you guys know how that goes.

Good evening…Am I hallucinating here? I searched for this online, but apparently other people have an HDMI port on their Pi 4 except for me. I searched the entire device and can’t find a single port where the HDMI cable would go in. Do certain models not come with the port? Does the case I have block it? I have a television I wanted to plug it into because I just installed Lakka on it so I could play retro games and stuff like that, but I can’t find the port anywhere. All I have are three USB-C ports, one ethernet port, one headphone jack, and four full-sized USB ports. Do I need a specific adapter for this? I’d love to use Retro Arch on the thing, but I’m not sure how I can since I can’t connect a screen to it to get sighted assistance, As I believe the Lakka menu is different from the normal Retro Arch menu. Is there anyone on here who has tried to do what I tried to do and succeeded with it? I would have asked in the other topic I made regarding the Pi and Retro Arch, but I thought it might be best to make another topic as I believe this might be a completely different issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Darin,Thanks for clarifying that. I'm glad there will be some competition for my resources, so to speak.I can't wait to see where this goes. I will definitely pass along feedback as I think of it. Thus far I'm just glad you're using square grids instead of hexes, which are harder to represent in ASCII

If you are asking if the game uses neural networks for its AI, it does not right now. Although it is a long-term goal. Probably the first part of the game to see neural network usage would be at the end-game. I wrote a about my current thoughts and rough plans here if you are interested to read more. The current AI is the manually written variety you see in most strategy games. The other civilizations, barbarians, and nobility can and may attack you.Oh, yeah, also, if you contact nobility or other empires, the quotes they give you are outputs from a quote generating neural network. It's supposed to roughly match their moods. A lot of the times the quotes are nonsensical, but sometimes they can be amusing. Other times inappropriate

Re: Accessibility in video games

Re: Accessibility in video games

I think the thing that frustrates me personally is like a 1 to Camlorn's 20.5 of raging. You ask what games are accessible, e.g. on Steam with controllers. "Oh fighting games like Ninja Bloodstorm Revinocu Diorama Fight Park 3.7"! Then you go, OK, let's check that out on Youtube, and it's just a bunch of fighting noises. Then you ask about accessibility, and it's pretty much "well you can hear the direction of the enemies".For me, that's not accessibility, at least not as it stands. I don't mean that in quite the same sense Camlorn does. I mean, OK, maybe it's playable somehow or other. But "you can tell the direction of the enemies" doesn't really help me much. OK, great. How am I navigating stuff? How am I picking options, fighting the enemies, things like that? I have no idea, and a lot of more mainstream game players seem to have that attitude of "I had to suffer through figuring it out, you do that too".So for me, I check out games like that on Youtube, and I have absolutely no idea what in the hell's going on. Like I said, it's just a bunch of random fighting noises. So I mean, I've asked about this a few times over the years, e.g. what X-Box stuff is accessible, is it worth getting one, stuff like that. I either get vague answers or crickets. If people really want to push for more mainstream game accessibility, getting something together to help potential newbies would be a big step, IMO. Maybe there's something out there I'm just unfamiliar with. But just a good solid getting started with more mainstream games, what's available, how do they work, practically speaking, stuff like that. Then people could make their own decisions about whether or not Hades or Warrior Lizards 12 or whatever is actually accessible and worth buying on Steam or shelling out for a console or what have you. I'm all fine with different people being able to handle different levels of accessibility and getting enjoyment from it. But it's frustrating, for me at least, to be told "oh yeah X is accessible", when you can mostly only really find that out by spending money on X, which I will happily do. Then you manage to chase down some game playing of X and it's just random noises, so as far as you can tell, no, X isn't really accessible at all.And I mean, I'm like, old and shit. I played video games, totally blind, on the Atari 2600 when it first came out. So I'm down with some random joystick movement and button mashing, up to a point. But to Camlorn's point, this ain't the old days of Space Invaders and stuff. That approach seems a lot less satisfying and useful in modern games.

That's good to hear, zkline. Thanks! The automated workers will first build a wall around a reasonably large radius. Immediately after, they will start zoning land within the walls. This will take them some amount of time (10 or more years of game time, roughly). You can just let them stay automated indefinitely and when they finish they will become idle (and locatable with the ';' key).On the map here are some of the more common symbols used (these are all shown by default you don't have to adjust any of the view settings for these):Astericks "*" are the zoned landNumber signs "#" are unzoned landTildes "~" are waterSuperscript symbol "^" are mountainsIt's ok if you forget those symbols because whether you're on land, mountains, water, etc is shown at the bottom of the screen (use shift b to move the cursor to it).The type of zone (residential, business, etc) is also shown at the bottom of the screen. If you're able to quickly read out the color of the astricks on the map you can also infer the zone type (green = residential, blue = commercial, yellow = industrial, brown = agricultural). One thing about the text at the bottom of the screen: it is shown in two or more columns and some screen readers seem to read together more than one column of text at a time in a way that is hard to understand. If you tab through the text with the "." and "," keys, then tell the screen reader to read one word at a time it might be easier to understand the boundaries of the column. Maybe this was already obvious though.

Darin,I'm really enjoying the game thus far, though it took me a bit to figure out how to follow your instructions. I'm on Mac OS, and using the TDSR screen reader I linked above. One thing I'm a bit unsure about is what happens if I just let the game run indefinitely? If i have a worker set to automated zone production, another building a city hall, and the explorer out working, does the automated worker stop once they've built walls, etc?Another question, how do I see the zones themselves? I am guessing it's one of the view options on the map but I'm a bit unclear on how to tell where the boundaries are and so forth. Thanks for any advice. This is a great project thus far.

2021-01-22 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Off-topic room : camlorn via Audiogames-reflector

Re: Accessibility in video games

You're thinking of 3D games as made of tiles, but they're not anymore.  Think more like tens of thousands of triangles for relatively small parts of the level, oriented in all sorts of directions.  Even the concept of "ground" isn't actually really a thing if you don't want it to be: you just let the physics engine do the physics engine thing off the triangle soup.  That's an at least slight simplification, but it's nonetheless accurate enough.In-game archery for example can be as accurate as real-world archery, including simulating the arrow falling due to gravity and wind conditions if you want it to be, and you might fall anywhere on the spectrum from lock-on to you literally have to be as good at aiming as a real world archer.  Characters are simulated to the level of arms, sometimes to the level of individual fingers.Precision varies from "meh, whatever" to "this pipe is literally as wide as your character's  feet and you have to run across it while being shot at", depending on the game.  Your measurements aren't inaccurate in the sense that that's a common enough requirement, but they're inaccurate in the sense that that's not really the minimum.  1ft^3 is very, very large when close up.So, first you have to develop a walking detector that can turn triangle soup into here is a surface you can traverse and how you can traverse it.  This is going to range from not so bad, where not so bad means you put one dev on the team on it full time for a couple weeks, through to impossible.  You might or might not have some sort of pathfinding matrix to go read from, depending.  Also, hope they don't screw with gravity or something.  And whatever this is has to deal with those skinny pipes or whatever--and have I mentioned they can be curved, and that the cutoff of where you can or can't walk on a sloped surface isn't a constant, it's due to whatever the real-world simulation of physics  says about friction? Then you maybe need your "you fell down, here is your vertical orientation" communication thing, depending. Enemies above the player are a problem because HRTF isn't that good.  Maybe the game is 3rd person.  If it's 3rd person you probably need to add some sort of first person viewpoint.  Except that if it was 3rd person, that might have been because even sighted people would have trouble playing it from a first person perspective, since the artists/designers were trying to give you an overview and puzzles might rely on it, so now you're making a thing that even sighted people can't handle accessible. If it can be done in the real world it can be done in a game.  Games are at the point of simulating curtains because games have run out of things to simulate.  You can do stuff like realistically stack dishes on a table in at least Skyrim.  Maybe you find a 3d game that's mostly 2d, doesn't require anything resembling spatial accuracy, and that has incredibly good pathfinding metadata.  But things like Unity make it trivial to have a game that's accurate to the real world to the point where the illusion doesn't break down even if you zoom in as close as you can, so much so that the limit isn't the game but the resolution of your TV, and it runs on a medium-end laptop.  So everyone just does that now.  if you're sighted and you want to make a big 3D game, you have to actively opt out of this tooling.  The equivalents of 3D game BGT run at this level.  There are a few things that are sort of unsolved like realistic water simulations, but that's the sort of thing that's irrelevant because if whatever magical solution got as far as needing to make realistic water accessible, it'd be the kind of thing that's doing groundbreaking machine learning.Seriously.  When I say that to solve this in the general case you need an AI or something and it would solve it in the real world too, I'm really, truly not kidding around.  You might be able to identify games which are low spatial accuracy and with a ton of level metadata and in that case maybe you've reduced the problem set down to the world's most monumental UX challenge.  But adding that metadata takes human effort, it's not automatic.  So you're going to get the bare minimum to make the game AI run.Lidar is capable of producing real world triangle meshes at a much higher resolution than game engines.  Give me a game AI navigation buddy that's not going to take multiple man-years per game engine plus at least man-months of customization per game after that, and I'll give you guide dog drones. Probably actually guide dog helmets since putting lidar on a drone and getting any real battery life out of it isn't a super feasible ask at the moment, but nonetheless these challenges are pretty close to equivalent. And every year, the engines get more realistic and require less structured data,, just generally working their way to nothing but the triangle soup.  You may think "surely it's not that bad", so let's talk about Resonance.

Hi.@tmstuff000, yeah that's cause the old fan fiction program I used doesn't work anymore. There should be a new one in there called fan fiction downloader, it's a bit different from the old blind accessible version but it works, plus you can set up a text file with links in it then go to read links from file, then open file and find your txt file and open it, the program will then download as many links as you put and put them in the downloads folder I believe, or at least; it does for me.

As a tip for Mac and Linux users, there is an alternative screen reader called TDSR. It can be found here on Github, and works quite well for playing this game. It sadly does not work on Windows, as far as I'm aware, but might be easier to get going than the somewhat advanced Speakup.

Re: what good keyboards are there for android for the blind to type with?

2021-01-22 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Off-topic room : UltraLeetJ via Audiogames-reflector

Re: what good keyboards are there for android for the blind to type with?

amazon review below. I found a lifesaver! its called candyboard, link at end of review.I purchased this (the bluetooth edition) and fell in love with it. The fn key does have a lot of uses, and it controls a few settings like changing the touchpad orientation (if you combine it with alt key) and it turns the upper keys into music controls and volume controls for every device that i have tested, which include a laptop, an iPad, an android phone. Since it also turns the backspace key into the delete key (that erases to the right instead of to the left), then an interesting way to send the infamous control alt delete is  done by pressing that fn key plus enter. The other interesting combo you can make is the fn key plus the control key which acts just as the operating system key (so the windows key for pcs and the “pretzel key,” “Apple key,” or “clover key.” or most commonly command, for macs and this one also has functions in android, too). It also has a bluetooth specific key which I guess goes into pairing mode when long pressed. Also, you can use the laser pointer without having to turn on the device using the small button on the front side of it. I write this because the users manual just throws a glorified illustration  of the key map and says rather little about the unit. Now, all this of the way I liked:versatility: you can combine shift plus numbers and also use some of the keys paired with the fn key to extend the keyboard. Fn plus arrows also help navigate tremendously. They were smart and mapped alt as the right alt key, so that when, or if,  you change keyboard layouts on whatever you use that use the alt gr key you can get tons of other symbols by combining it with letters. Sadly, there is no really a way to input ascii characters directly such as holding alt and then typing in a number, but given that there are many references (google and find an article called Keyboard shortcuts for international characters) this is almost trivial nowadays. The added touch pad, mouse buttons and so on are just the icing on the cake.portability and compatibility: This for me is perfect. It brings back memories of blackberry and all of their lines with physical keyboard phones. As a blind user is just great because you can even unlock your phone using it so no need to get it out of a bag or whatever. plus, I can now purchase just about any touch screen only device that supports a physical keyboard and I feel at home every time. I can carry it very easily even in my jean pocket, the same I use for the phone because its just slim, and narrower, but just as tall as my samsung galaxy a9 (or pretty much any other phone in the market nowadays). So no need for extra cases, or anything, though a lanyard strap would have been kinda sleek.Only small things I did not like:Manual is too graphic thus a bit counterintuitive and you need to experiment and press everything in every way to understand what it all really does. Also, fails to mention that you can have all of the goodies when you switch layouts on the system of whatever it is you use, like the alt gr key that I explained above.Key placements. So I am still getting used to it, especially because the lower row, where the z,x, c. and so on keys are located is displaced oh so slightly to the left, I guess to acomodate more keys and such, that I trip up somewhat when I type words that contain these letters. But I am sure that with less than a month of practice this will be a breeze. Though some symbols sometimes hide in really impractical places and it can feel somewhat cramped, so nope, you cannot necessarily type easily with every finger you use if you are an avid qwerty typer. The material: OK, so this bit... is a tough shell because its very light and feels great to the touch but I would definitely have appreciated if the home row keys, in other words, j, and f, were duly marked in some tactile way. But again, getting used to things should not be much of a problem. It tends to be a bit clicky plasticky loud but i can live with that just fine. So, great product overall, I would definitely recommend this all the way.https://www.amazon.com/VisionTek-CandyB … 4?dchild=1

Re: Accessibility in video games

But realistically, if you're dealing with a human-sized avatar, an accessible resolution of 1ft^3 is quite optimistic, yeah. I do get the impression that, unless you're talking FPS type controls where precise aiming matters, most mainstream games actually are about 1ft^3 in terms of what they expect from players, or thereabouts, with all the fine details mostly being for immersion rather than gameplay. But maybe I'm misunderstanding bits and pieces of information that have Marine Snowed in over the years. You say a handful, but I've only heard of like two people who got far enough in the JFIMA for me to conclude it's playable. I do feel like a more competent sound designer could improve on the concepts and get us the 3d equivalent of BK3, but that's clearly not me.And that's a resolution of, like, 1m^3. That's abismal by mid 90s standards. But everything else we have is abismal by mid 90s standards, so whatever.(OK, actually, the size of voxels in the JFIMA is not especially consistent, because I established the low/mid/high thing using a house as the first map, and I needed something more like 1.5m to get chairs / tables / counters. But then the JFIMA has cars and sidewalks, and clearly the voxels need to be bigger. But the point is that the resolution is terrible and I don't see it improving.Meh, I'd be happy with a game that is to the JFIMA as BK3 is to Mario, probably. But that would never work as a mainstream game.

I never got that error. Did you try running the thing as admin? I am always admin on my comp in a way, maybe it couldn't write to the program files directory?and about how to get speakup, I'm really not sure why you'd still do that, but there is an arch linux distro called tarch(talking arch) that comes with it. However, as it's an arch distro, it drops you in the live environment, good luck trying to install it from there and only with the command line! Yeah, there are install arch guides on the internet, but still...a bit of a daunting task if you ask me.regarding dark days ahead, I don't think it not working with orca is the case anymore, though I might be wrong on that, didn't research in some time.Btw, the extension pac for virtual box is to enable external devices to be shared among the host and guest, not for the kind of file sharing you're thinking of, with shared folders and stuff. The guest additions, however, are kernel drivers that make it possible to do many things, from clipboard sharing, to shared folders, autoscaling displays, etc. To install that, you need to mount the VBOX guest additions iso file, then run the install.sh or run.sh or whatever they are calling  it now. Alternatively, ubuntu can and sometimes will prompt you that the cd unit has an autorun file and if you wish the program to run, in this case, the shell script that installs the kernel modules. Do that, give the password when prompted, restart when needed, and you're good to go!

Re: A strange question

Depends how you define dirty, and what the sanitizer is made of.  It probably won't lose it's ability to kill bacteria for a long time, but it doesn't break down particles because that's not what they're for.  So you can get grit, oil, etc. in it for sure.  If it's really cheap and the bottle isn't airtight, I could see it evaporating if it's alcohol-based.  But you can't find an answer because sanitizer is just a huge category covering everything from homeopathic sanitizers that couldn't kill an amoeba unless it's an amoeba that can get embarrassed on your behalf, straight through to "if this isn't off your skin in 30 seconds, say bye to your skin".

Hello everyone, this is a bit of an odd question, and I tried googling it, maybe the reason I havn't gotten answer is because well, its strange, maybe a little silly. But here goes. Can sanitiser get dirty in the bottle? After a while, does it get dirty? Or perhaps putting sanitiser in a dirty bottle make it get dirty, thus losing its cleaning ability? I was just super curious to know if there is an answer to that, and hopefully the answer is no. I mean, I suppose, anything can get dirty, but what made it more interesting was the fact it was designed to be a cleaning agent.

pyAGE - yet another Python audio game engine

2021-01-22 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Developers room : Hijacker via Audiogames-reflector

pyAGE - yet another Python audio game engine

Its not like we don't have enough of them yet, but here we go...What is it?I once started developing my own little audio game engine like 8 years ago, driving one of my first audio game attempts back then. That was in Python 2.7 times, and I just started learning Python those days. Years went by, and I switched to different projects, creating new prototypes of games, always modifying the engine in the process, but never thinking about creating a standalone project out of it. Then, Lucia and Earwax came along, together with Synthizer and some other amazing projects out there, and I decided to give it another go, entirely Python 3 based, statically typed and rewritten from scratch. Its not like that is something new, but I didn't like Lucia and earwax didn't feel like it would go the same path i'd like to take. What it doesAs I already said, pyAGE (python audio game engine) will include proper type definitions which can be properly checked against MyPy to ensure type safety. Its built with modularity in mind, allowing the user to select their favourite backend for whichever purpose and deciding for one audio library over the other. Right now, Synthizer is the default audio backend and cytolk the default output backend, but especially for Linux and Mac, other backends will be added later. Each user has the freedom to create their own backends at any time however.PyAGE is based on pygame 2.0 for now, although it will try to prevent the developer from ever having to mess around with the pygame details.Current situationPyAGE isn't even alpha ready yet. It has API documentation and a docs website ready to visit, you can give it a go here.Other than that, it has some kind of sound support, but its not where I want it to be in the long run, so i'll have some work to do for sure here.Same goes for menus, I want to provide multiple other menu item types like sliders or checkboxes in addition to the ones already available. Also, proper Linux and Mac support isn't yet here due to missing backends. And alot more helpful methods and event handling will properly show up later as well.Future visionsI don't want pyAGE to be as toolboxie as earwax tends to be. I don't want it to be a "no-brainer" audio game engine, like "create something within a yaml file and the engine will create a game for you". That feels much like Sable, or the much older audio game kit, which didn't end up very well.I will make it as comprehensive as possible though, adding pyInstaller support later on, making things as easy as possible, but sticking to actual programming at the core, so that you'll have the biggest freedom possible and can live your creativity to its fullest. I will stick to basic functionality however. For example: the structure of the project would allow me to add some sound compression/packaging functionalities later on, but its not planned yet, at least not for 1.0, since I think that those measures of protection everyone seems so concerned about are basically not worth the time implementing it. Simple configuration management will be included however, including some simple encryption to prevent everyone's mom messing with save data, but then again, even that might be part of a game as long it means fun for the players.I like the object-oriented inheritance style, so you'll probably have to import and inherit kind a few classes to add more functionalities of your own if you want to go with pyAGE. If that is what you like to do as well, why not give it a look as long as it is not ready yet? That sounds rather incomplete, why bother posting it hereSimple: so you can give it a look and send over some inspirational messages, like wishes, things you like/don't like, questions I'd need to clarify within the documentation and so on. Basically to get some discussion going. It is somehow usable already too, just no examples there yet and no tests either... I started it rather abruptly and thus didn't think about test-driven development and all that, but it will happen eventually before the official 1.0 release. That's itI could probably keep rambling for quite a while, but better stop now then never.TL;DR: You can check out the project on GitHub as well: https://github.com/Timtam/pyAGE

Re: Accessibility in video games

@18In so far as I know, everything you've done isn't even close to the complexity of the games you're mentioning.  You have to rewind the clock a lot further for that.  I'm pretty sure that even half-life had a full physics engine approximating the real world, but it was at the beginning of that era so it's possible it didn't.  I know half-life 2 did, though, being as I could play it; you might have made navigation accessible but not good enough to do a firefight.  Games since then have developed larger, more complex environments.  If you want to do something like a modern RPG then even figuring out the world map is a challenge--nothing like small islands of realistic geography to make your life fun. You've shown that you can write a 3D game for the blind which can be played by a small minority of blind players, but Audioquake showed the same thing, and no matter how you slice it 3D games have moved on since then.  Some game engines (Unity) are now used by self-driving car people.  They have extra metadata and level designers could add extra things to the level to make it work, but solving the problem in the general case would solve it for the real world too.If you/this thread wants my positive outlook?  Reach out to people like Slay the Spire, be like "if you just added text to speech blind people could play" and start trying to make inroads there.  There's enough things that could be made accessible that we don't need to chase the ones that can't, if we're going to chase it.  We could and really should be aiming for the low-hanging fruit first.  Hit up people making rhythm games.  "have you seen Sequence storm?".  Or people making fight games.  If it weren't for the bullet hell aspects, I think you could almost, almost do undertale.  But there's a whole world of games like that that are 2d and in something tile-based and all you'd need is Shadow Line levels of stuff to play them, but what everyone cares about are the big AAA 3D games that can't really be adapted even with near-infinite money.  Game accessibility is doable.  hell, if you went to indie studios doing popular-but-underpaying things and said "here is $2 and here is how you make the game accessible" things would happen, no infinite money/hypothetical solutions required.

Re: Accessibility in video games

I still say it can be done under the right circumstances. But I also notice that the right circumstances involves an uncomfortable number of grappling hooks and magic equivalents. By which I mean, before I got anywhere near here, and was designing 3d level concepts, I kept running into "if a genie gave me this right now, how could I actually play it?" problems, which tended to result in high-forgiveness features and tools to make precision less pinpoint and more dinner-plate, so to speak. But mainstream games have done similar things. In 2d, sure, most games say either jump the whole way or climb a rope/ladder, but some let you catch a ledge if you get close enough, and climb up. Slower than a perfect jump, but acceptable in most circumstances, and allows the devs to play with level design and jump animations in different ways. In 3d, Sonic games introduced the hoaming attack, because it turns out that jumping on moving enemies with precision in 3d is a lot harder than in low-res 2d.And I could sorta imagine a co-op game with the ability to target-lock, allowing one player to target the other in order to follow them sighted guide style. It would have to be a very solid game wherein this does not significantly detract from the experience, though, which sounds challenging, but still doable. But why do I bother? Nobody's going to do it right. Give me $100 million, the best software and hardware, and an elixor of infinite AP, and I'm sure I'd still mess it up. Windows Vista was in development for over 10 years before it came out, and aiui, it's the least popular version of Windows since ME. How about NASA's SLS? Duke Nukum Forever? I'd say Halflife III but I don't know if that's a good example?

@FubsepudeI don't have Linux mint but I have installed speakup on ubuntu which might be similar enough.I believe I ran:sudo apt install espeakupYou may need to restart your computer after that. Then you need to switch to the framebuffer console for speakup to work. It will not work if you just pull up a terminal window in graphics mode. You can switch to a framebuffer console by pressing ctrl alt f2Each function key will take you to a different console. For example ctrl alt f3 will take you to another separate framebuffer console.ctrl alt f1 will take you back to your graphical desktop (or similar, different distros map the function keys differently, so try out the others if that doesn't work.. some are like f7 or greater).

Re: accessible free open source and closed source everything

@8, why, though? A programming language is a tool to make computer programs. The only programming languages that are accessible in the sense of accessibility that this topic encompasses are visual programming tools, and I don't consider that 'programming' by the traditional sense of the word since I don't think you can truly gain an understanding of computer code when you do it that way, and your restricted in what you can do with visual programming tools anyway. Nearly every programming language, except visual ones, utilize text formats that any text editor supports. Therefore, it seems illogical to include programming languages here when they are not software, but ways of writing software, and accessibility cannot be a qualifier in the sense of the word that you intend here. You could argue that I'm talking about the interpreter/compiler that transforms the code into machine language, but again, nearly every compiler/interpreter is either command-line or has a command-line equivalent to its visual/GUI counterpart.

We will be posting a new video on the Youtube channel this weekend. This one will most likely cover how to take off. Getting into flight simming is a steep learning curve.

Re: Your Eclipse Experiences

Eclipse (and derivatives) have always been sluggish and difficult to use. It also has accessibility problems, e.g.: tree views not properly updating screen reader focus when navigating through nodes.

@caioSome people have had difficulty using the default terminal emulator I bundled the game with (the one that's launched if you use the .bat file). However, the game can be played with the default windows cmd.exe. You may want to check these instructions out:https://www.arcanefortune.com/wiki/inde … on_WindowsLast time I tried to use NVDA on Windows (which was several months ago), it wasn't nearly as usable as the Speakup reader on Linux.I am/was considering packaging a full Linux emulator so that Windows users could use speakup without having to install linux.

Yes, I think you can do this in the alt enter projects settings thing. You can set the default shifting algorithm, and rubber band library is in there.

Re: Arcane Fortune - Windows/Linux/Mac console-played grand strategy game

@arnold18There are a few ways you can figure out what your explorer has found. In the menu, if you go to the Accounting sub-menu and then select under "Resources" the "Discovered" entry, you can pull up a table of all the resources your explorer has found. It will also tell you the distance and direction from your current location to the resource. If you press enter while selecting one of the resource entries, the game will move you to that location and place your text cursor on it.You can use this feature to cause a worker, for example, to move that location. So what you'd do is first select the worker, and enter the move mode. Then go to the menu and select the resource to move your text cursor onto it. If the resource is close enough you then press enter to confirm moving the worker to that location. In this way you can find and move to the resource and create, for example, a new city near it.If your explorer discovers another civilization, it will be shown in the game info mode (which you enter by pressing shift R). The first line shown in that mode is always any relevant news that has happened recently -- and discovering another civilization will be shown there. If you missed it and it's no longer shown there, you can always review any past entries from the menu by going to the "View" and then "World" entry under the "History" line.Another tip I have is in warfare. Probably the easiest way to invade or conquer if playing the game with a screen reader would be to use your noble houses. Contact them via the menu "Intel" sub-menu and select the "Contact Noble House" entry. Then select the "Send your troops to attack" and tell them which city to attack. The noble house may (or may not) agree to attack that city for you. If they agree it may take them a while to be successful. Asking more than one of your noble houses, if you have more than one, to attack a target can help speed things along.
