Re: Earwax Story Builder

Hi.I have read this topic with huge interest.I don't have much experience with Python, and I haven't tried the virtual invirement yet. I'm afraid to mess things up, but sounds like that's the point of a virtual invirement, that if you do mess things up, then it doesn't matter. So, for this reason, I should just give it a try to see if I can get it up and running.I have a few questions about Earwax:1. When playing a world, how do you navigate? Is it like a website, or is it menu based?2. Can I create a world in other languages than English as long as it's written in characters which Python supports?3. Can a compiled world be played on other platforms than Windows?I'm quite excited for this project.

The same crash started to happen to me yesterday with the same mods and language is english. The exception in the slay the spire log refers to an error from text the spire. I can post the log here later today. Though first I am going to try to investigate a bit more. Namely I'll try to see is it just text the spire or say the spire and text the spire together that cause the crash i.e. I'll try with one of the mods disabled and see what happens. If it is only a text the spire problem I'll create a github issue about it for the text the spire project.

I believe there working on downloading the video and audio through orbital support craft, at least until the rovers main communications antenna is deployed. They're also uploading the navigation software that was still being worked on after launch, so it may be a few days before it can get up and running. If anyones interested in learning more about the experimental drone and how it works though, there's a breakdown of that [here], including what it sounds like in a martian like atmosphere. Each bot has a caller, a sign that you must put before a command. Looking in the bot's information you should find the necessary sign and the commands you can send to the bot. I've seen some bots that simmulate rpg games, even pokemon. I haven't tested any of them yet but am planning to do it in the near future.

Re: Tips for safely walking on ice?

Plant your feet slightly apart, about shoulder width. Walk slowly taking little steps and plant your whole foot on the ground. If you happen to slide, and believe me, it will happen eventually, Don't panic. Hold your balance until you stop. Bent your knees slightly so your center of gravity is closer to the ground, this way you'll have a better balance.I loved ice when I was a child, I still do actually. We have ice each year and as kids, we used to slide on patches of ice just for fun, this is how I learned. Having balance on it is the key, you just have to learn by practicing.I would have loved to go ice scating this year too but sadly due to covid the facilities are closed.Seriously, ice scating is the best practice you could get, it really helps you getting used to how your body works on ice and it will elliminate the fear of it. Atleast it did for me.

the point of open source software is for any one who wants bugs to be fixed, to do it them selves as well. For example if you see a bug, and you know how to fix it, no one should stop you from fixing it your self... else, just submit an issue if you don't want to fix it or can not fix it...Else the software would not be open sourced.

Re: Little Boss' Lemonade Stand 1.0.0 is now available!

Please allow me to try to explain what I meant in post #81 about "top-down"Imagine yourself on a 2 dimensional grid with coordinates X, Y.Pressing up will move your character north, or up on the Y axis.Pressing down moves you south or down on the Y axis.Pressing right moves you east or right on the X axis.Pressing left moves you west on the grid's X axis.If this were a video game and not an audiogame, it would give the player a top-down perspective on the screen.Manamon uses such a style as well.I have not played the games you menttioned, but I am told shadowrineuses a top-down perspecttive as well.In DragonSong, you can move around using the directional keys as I just described. There will be objects such as treasures, NPC's or enemies. Some remain stationary, some move around in the same manner described above. Each object will have a sound associated with it. As your character moves around the map, the volume and channels for the sounds will change according to your position relative to the object. If the object is to your left, you will hear it in your left ear or on your left speaker. The opposite being ttrue for the right side.If the object is above you, the object will sound more centered. If the object is below you, it will sound centered, but at a slightly lowered pitch.Special sounds will play in your right or left ear if the area opens up, for example, if you are following a wall on your left, the game will play a sound if the wall comes to an end on your left. The game will play a differend sound if there is no wall on your left and there is on your next step up or down. The game will also emit sounds as your character approaches walls or barriers in the appropriate direction. these sounds increase in pitch the closer you get to the wall. If you have a map of the area, you can use it to activate pre-made beacons to help guide you to specific places on that map. You can even add custom beacons by marking spots on your map.Even without a map, you still have some help navigating the game world with the ability to pause the game and look around, which will tell you where nearby objects are relative to your position. I hope this helps! If you have any suggestions as to this subject, feel free to reach out!-Cerulean

Oh, my mistake. While I have played some NES games, I’ve never played those particular ones because of that very reason. You have to know where you’re going and there weren’t many good audio cues. so, in terms of moving about the world in audio games, is the game you are making something like shadow Rhine and or planet saga?

What I would have done is put different move tutors in different cities. Maybe a total of four of them.Maybe the first is in Vermacaw, post power plant. Available moves would be something like Holy Water, Dark Gift, Protect, Wind Force, Bubble Burst, Parasite Bite and Speed Kick. Nothing too overpowered. Then move up from there. And not every manamon would get every one of those moves.Of course, this would take some time to set up, but it would definitely improve the experience immensely. Aaron spoke once of maybe having a single move tutor that allowed for some manamon to learn some moves, but it hasn't happened yet. I don't think the other issues on the table are fixed yet either.

Re: I'd like to do walkthroughs, but I struggle too much with presentation

A few observations and hopefully helpful pieces for you.I think you being on the autism spectrum is at least a small part of this. You probably care about smaller details more than your average player will. This is absolutely not a bad thing. It's just objective fact, so please don't take it as a criticism. The trick is going to be in hitting the sweet spot between the way you would want a walkthrough done, vs. how you believe others would want a walkthrough done.To that end, I think the level of description should be commensurate with the difficulty and/or the complexity. If you spent five minutes explaining the layout of a set of corridors, and you only actually navigate through them for a minute and twenty seconds, that might be overkill. There's no exact formula to this though.Generally, in my experience, walkthroughs can be of all types. Some are quick and dirty. Others are so exhaustive that no stone remains unturned. I personally tend more toward the latter, but not all the way. My manamon guide is an example of this. I explain almost everything...sort of. I don't tell you exact stats, but I give impressions and outlines of virtually anything you might care about except, like, the various coin-making games in the rocket hideout/casino place.I would love to see your TechnoShock walkthrough, by the way.

I'd like to do walkthroughs, but I struggle too much with presentation

2021-02-18 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — General Game Discussion : musicalman via Audiogames-reflector

I'd like to do walkthroughs, but I struggle too much with presentation

Hi all,I'm going to try not to make this longer than it needs to be, but no promises! I'm known to ramble, and to have my mind go a million miles a minute, but I hope I can articulate this in a way which makes sense.Basically, I've wanted to make walkthroughs for games, and other stuff too which is not game related. As a sort of introduction to this idea, I'm the type of person who likes knowing and sharing things. Things which seem workable, at any rate. For example, if I'm playing a game, I will spend sometimes an hour or two trying to work out patterns, step counts, interesting characteristics... anything I can think of to give me the information I need to develop a strategy. I know there are those who analyze more than me, but the older I've gotten, the more I catch myself analyzing things instead of running and gunning, because it does help. That said, I've been known to overthink and overanalyze in the past.My desire to turn this into making walkthroughs came from my preteen and teenage days listening to Raul Gallegos, Toonhead, Kelly Sappergia etc. It's been forever since I listened to any of that stuff, but when I was like 12 or 13, that was what I wanted to do when it came to games. I wanted to make reviews. I wanted to especially make walkthroughs to showcase an entire game. Maybe it's a little out there, but hearing someone else play an unfamiliar game does really wild things to my imagination. For instance when Raul played Shades of doom, and I heard these interesting sounds the game had, I felt like I was being transported farther into the world than I could ever get to go by myself. So when I do walkthroughs, I want to make my audience feel that, while also sharing my tips and knowledge.I've made several attempts to do walkthroughs of my favorite games. Not Shades of Doom, but others I consider myself pretty good at. At the end of the day though, I struggle a lot with presentation and it's really starting to eat at me.I'm the type of person who is prepared to pause what I'm doing and explain for 5 or 10 minutes how something works. Granted, my explanations often don't quite get the job done, but I make an honest attempt. But I feel like most people aren't like that. Why would they want to sit and listen to me talk for 10 minutes? Especially if I ramble on about how something works, when most people probably don't care and just want to see me get through the blasted game. So I never know how long to spend explaining something, or when to let the game or activity move forward. After all, some people do like to just watch and learn, as they say. So to put it simply, I never know how to balance explanation with example.Another thing I struggle with, though I'm trying to work on it, is how to be natural. Because of how well I try to explain things, I really hate being thrown off track by something which doesn't go to plan. I can't tell you the number of times I've attempted to do walkthroughs or stuff like that, only to get frustrated because I can't seem to pace things right. Either I forget things, or the game decides to be mean and throw me off track, or the explanation ends up being too long-winded... those are the three reasons I shelve any walkthroughs I start. If it were a let's play, I'd be totally fine rolling with it, because there's sort of an understanding that a let's-play is just narrating an experience in realtime, whether it be uneventful, bumpy or otherwise. But for a walkthrough, I don't want to give the sense that I've lost control of the situation. Because as soon as I lose control, I have to pretty much abandon script, and go by instinct and some prior knowledge I've been given no time to lay out. That is something I find notoriously difficult to explain to those who have no idea what happened. For example, the escape sequence in Scarlet Shells. If you've played it, you know what i'm talking about... how do you walk someone through that? Either explain it beforehand, or just say "Watch me and learn!" I'd personally explain it all, spending as much time talking as I'd be playing. But is that appropriate?I guess my low self-confidence doesn't help here either. I can think of times in the past where I went above and beyond to explain everything that seemed remotely relevant, only to get shot down because I didn't focus on what was really important. I went on too long, I was too technical, I didn't provide anything of substance. And even when I tried to moderate myself (shorten explanations, fix spelling errors, leave out all the stuff I didn't think was necessary), I was still criticized more or less the same way, and I didn't know really what to do about it, because doing something about it means changing it, which might conflict with my intentions. I struggle to deal with that. So, I've had this rather cynical feeling about uploading any big things of mine.Things I've thought of trying:Imitating my

Re: Tips for safely walking on ice?

This is ironic, because here in North Carolina we’ve only gotten snow once this year, and that was a few months ago. Since then, we never got ice, and we’ve always gotten snow and ice here for as long as I can remember. Surprised to hear that Texas has gotten hit pretty hard. That being said, I would invest in some ice cleats if I were you. They’re these little rubber things that you attached to the bottom of your shoes, and they have these little spikes on the bottom that will stab into the ice. Once you put those on your shoes, you just walk by stomping everywhere so that the cleats can do their job. The only disadvantage to those is you can’t keep them on your shoes if you have to go inside because you can actually damage your floors in your house if you keep them on. They’re also really hard to take off.I remember a fall I had before I got my ice cleats in training. I was walking to a crosswalk to go across the street, but I ended up stepping on the curb instead of the ramp. Unfortunately, the drop off between the curb and the street turned into a slope of ice, so when I stepped I slipped forward and fell flat on my ass. It didn’t hurt that much, but it did kind of hurt my pride.

Re: what types of skills do I need to work with arduinos?

I know a number of other blind people who have done it.  If I think about it I think I could come up with at least 10, though apart from myself I don't think I know anyone where I could point a random unknown off the internet at them.I started programming at 12.  I didn't release my first project until 20 or 21 or something like that.Much of your difficulty--much of what college teaches you--is that you're probably not learning in an organized way.  Project-based learning doesn't scale well, where you decide you're doing a project and damn that project is going to happen.  Being frustrated isn't really compatible with learning, and setting your goal as something specific that you can't do right now is a great way to just be frustrated instead of getting anything out of it.  I attribute much of my success to having come at it from a different perspective, where the primary motivating factor was hey aren't computers neat I wonder what makes them go, and then one day I found a project and did it.  And it sucked.  We don't talk about camlorn_audio.  But camlorn_audio was my "and now the pieces fit" a-hah moment where years of interest payed off and I saw how it fit together.  After that big projects stopped being frightening. When you do college you spend a year or two writing very tiny programs that do very boring things.  You'll spend an entire semester covering just if statements, loops, and functions.  Programming is sort of engineering.  There's no instant gratification at the beginning, and chasing instant gratification at the beginning is often harmful.  The thing that college does that's useful is it imposes a fixed structure and guides your learning down productive paths.  Yeah the classes are nice, but really what's useful is that there's a place to ask questions and the homework/syllabus etc is always saying "now go here next" or "you need this first".You're probably freaking about these timelines.  But you've got to remember: the average programmer doesn't program before college, and goes and learns it in 4 years.  It took me from 12 to 20 or so because until like 19 I was doing high school and stuff and a few hours on the weekend is never going to really do it for something so complicated as coding, because by the time you really get started you're out of time for a week or whatever.  If you sit down and do it intensively a few years to be Amazon-level competent is reasonable.  You probably won't get into Amazon because there's 99 Amazon junior level engineers who all interviewed for your position and they're going to just basically randomly pick one; but go to a good college and you come out of it with that kind of knowledge. Some sighted people--at least 1 of my coworkers, but i think 2--did the even faster path of coding bootcamp.  Those work if you find a reputable one and can get someone from not knowing much to junior-level resume in 3-4 months.  But they're expensive and very far from an ideal environment for a blind developer. In so much as I was lucky, I was privileged enough to have a family who could support me through college.  Beyond that, yes, talent plays some role.  Whether or not everyone can learn programming is an open debate, I come down weakly on the side of they can't.  But a lot of that is more to do with, I guess being inspired by it?  Some people see a keyboard and know that music is going to be their thing; some people see a computer and just start tearing it apart and finding out what's inside and etc.  Half of programming is art, in a really hard to describe way.  at least, at the level I'm at where it's not "implement this class with these 5 functions that do exactly this stuff" anymore.  If you're not inspired you can definitely force it, but you'll never be as good as the person who it spoke to.But as to how I stack up?  Hard to tell, except that I've got at least 2 coworkers who make me look like a newbie.  I think that currently my primary advantage is that I'm interested in things.  I learn bits of math and algorithms and such just because I get curious and have an hour to kill, so I go look up how a thing works.  Then I forget most of it, but a little bit stays around and suddenly 6 months later it proves useful that I knew about b-trees or this weird C++ feature or whatever.  Now imagine that over 10 or 15 years and it gets really impressive fast.  Combine that with having the experience necessary to work on large codebases and you get to throw words like full-stack engineer around.Blindness jobs go one of two ways.  It's either something average paying minimum wage or less.  Or it's something super high paying like programmer.  I think there's some blind lawyers, some of the top Randolph Sheppard spots make 6 or 7 figures, and my brother's business may very well take off in a couple years and do the same for him (also blind; he's doing dumpster rentals in Florida with a friend, and even 5 trucks

But you still take the same damage from all the old favorites like piledriver and powerfang and the like. Dragon burst still does 40 damage and so on. So, all in all, meh.

what we need to do is spread this news to big YouTube gamers. They are the ones who have a huge influence, whether you realize it or not. Even better, we need a member of the blind community to become good friends with a huge gamer so that the gamer really has a reason to push, so that their friend can play. Big goals, yeah. But that 's what we need.

I'm finding Eclipse to be pretty tolerable. It can be a bit quirky, but I don't mind using it. I'm not entirely convinced I really need it for this particular class, but when push comes to shove and I may be in a position where using it is more conducive, it'll be somewhat of a decent experience.

Online is busted. I thought we established that. lolMartiagle also gets Hone Blades, which jacks its attack into realms poor Colavaird can only dream of. It's Colavaird with a v, not a b, by the way.Fury Power is a neat move, and sometimes the defense-lowering thing really will not matter. It definitely has its place. Actually, Ninjarkon with Fury Power+Vengeance Strike+Hone Blades gets freakishly dangerous once it's set up.

my problems with this game are.  1. p2w.  seriously, the p2w of this crap is ridiculous!  imagine that you are from the shepan class, and need to make upgrades in the hard strike skill.  you buy the skill book, and you need to pray that the fucking book is the hard strike book.  ten fails to refine the equipment, players can go out and kill others at will, and then just buy with diamonds the item that reduces the evil value.  the land lives or dies if you try to get there with level 70, there will never be players with the same level as you or at least a few levels up.  and the problem that made me give up on this game.  the server.  to illustrate how shitty this server is, it comes in second after rtk.  and about p2w again.  summarizing in simple words?  excess lootboxes.

At #11, unfortunately this is also a problem I have had on my personal computer. For some reason, NVDA reads those browse dialogs just fine on my work laptop though. It is a strange bug that I am not sure about. I am guessing that the version of Eclipse I have on my work computer is older just because my work takes forever to approve new software updates, but I am not sure. I should compare versions to see.Anyways, when I have this problem, I just load JAWS to get through the browse dialog, and then reload NVDA. It is the only work around I have found. Perhaps it is something that could be added to the eclipse add on for NVDA. Not sure, I have actually wanted to get ahold of a developer for the eclipse add on project to ask a couple questions about debugging, but have had problems finding contact information.

Re: Tips for safely walking on ice?

Walk through the grass. It can still be slippery, but the ice builds up on the cement and especially on hills it can be very slick. The best advice I have is to test each step before putting your weight on it. Go slow, use your garbage cans as extra support if you need to. The straight up and straight down approach works, but that takes practice. The shuffle, if you go slow, and are able to keep all your weight off of one foot, should be okay if you slide just take that foot and put it back, or let it slide until you find a less slippery section.Lots of people fall, and a hypermobile joint is risky. Maybe let someone else take out the garbage?

Re: fatal error when running The great toy robbery

You wrap the first import of accessible output two with a try/except block.  If you can’t figure out where that happens, wrap your entire main script in try/accept and delete the folder upon triggering the exception as well as re-run the game. Finally, you could also update accessible output two itself and allow it to handle this gracefully.

Re: Tips for safely walking on ice?

Here in Canada, we get plenty of ice in the winter.Walk slowly, and do not shuffle. Take short, slow, plodding strides, and sort of stomp your feet. As in, pick your foot up, move it forward, and plop it straight down. If you're scuffing or shuffling as you put your foot down, and there's ice there, you're going to have a higher chance of sliding. Ice's main risk is that friction is fucked up, so if you're just sort of slamming your boot or shoe-soles straight down, there's a lot less risk of slipping and sliding.

Re: Manamon 2: Impressions Thread

Colavaird is faster than Martiagle, but Martiagle has higher attack and gets Hone Blades, plus Obscure and Sandy Wind if you're into that. Also, Colavaird's "coverage" comes from Fury Power, which kind of tanks its already low defenses. It's a strong move, true, and it will affect steel, ice and stone types, but you pay the price for it. By contrast, Martiagle's coverage comes from Berserk Branch and, secondarily, Speed Kick (I think?). Berserk Branch covers earth, stone and water types. Martiagle gets Fly, so it doesn't have to sacrifice its HP to do huge damage. It doesn't get Dive Bomb, which sucks, but that also means you can shove Rubber Gloves on it and give an electric type a bit of a hard day.So no, I don't think either of these manamon is head and shoulders above the other.

It is faster and has  more coverage, and can hit harder with suicide dive and dive bomb if it has a speed equipment, havin almost the same power than fly. It has almost the same defenses.

Thanks all, definitely appreciate it.Part of my issue is that my right shoulder is hypermobile, meaning it's dislocated so many times that it comes out easily. So a fall isn't just a bruised ego for me, but a real hospital risk. Fortunately I have pretty solid balance and rarely fall, but ice is definitely a new factor I don't know how to account for.Maybe I'll just try sticking it out until this melts. I'll be a bit less risk averse if I ever get this shoulder fixed. Thanks again, I'll keep these tips in mind if I need to risk this.
