I could be wrong, but I believe that requiring that visually impaired people must first buy Minecraft to play your game will be a deal killer, unless you plan to make Blindcraft freeware. Otherwise you are traveling down the same road that Q9 eventually went.Instead of being available as a stand alone game, in order to get and play Q9, you have to first have a licensed copy of JAWS, then you have to buy an add on package for it called Leasey. So instead of being a $30 game, it's now a $1,200 game!

Minecraft licensing is like Steam in that your license is tied to an account on minecraft.com. This is from my experience with Minecraft before I lost my vision. Since then I've heard that Microsoft acquired Minecraft so things may have changed.If you want to write something similar, so long as you don't try to make a clone of Minecraft itself you should be good to go.Good luck! Making something like Minecraft will not be easy!

OK!It would be like AudioQuake then. To play Audio Quake you first have to buy the original Quake game. After Quake is installed, you then apply the Audio Quake mod to it. Now you have an accessible version of the Quake first person shooter.A year or two ago somebody was talking about doing what you're proposing, except that it would be a stand alone game, not requiring that you first buy the original Minecraft. They were calling it Audiocraft. I don't think it got anywhere.Hopefully you'll have more success, it would be nice to get something out of the money I spent on Minecraft.

The thing with Bavisoft though is that they did release a key generator for their games when they stopped selling them. Thus allowing people who didn't get the chance to buy their games the ability to play them.I don't know if any of Malinche's games had trial versions that could be converted to full versions with a registration key, but I've also never seen a key generator from them either. So the only legal way you could play any of their games was to have bought them while they were available.Barring any status updates on the games from the copyright holders, that's pretty much the end of the story.

Oops! Don't go dissing Zork (wink), of all the interactive fiction I've played, Zork is my absolute favorite.Zork was originally written on a minicomputer, a PDP 11 I believe. When Infocomm ported it over to micros it was so big they had to split it up into the now familiar Zork Trilogy. It was during the porting of Zork that they developed their interactive fiction engine that they later used for all of their games, of which I've played most.

I don't know if this will work, but I'm going to try it because I'm interested in both the Match Maker and My Country Place games.I just doenloaded VG Storm's Adventure at C and noted that it has an option to install or uninstall the hook for JAWS. I'm curious if this hook is global in that it would benefit other games or if it only works for the Adventure at C game.

Considering how hard it would be to reacquire the games, I can fully understand that.I have a computer chess game that I can't play because it wasn't designed for blind players, nor could it be adapted for blind use because of the way it works. But I refuse to sell it because it is so very rare. I spent ten years looking for it and only found two people selling one of them. I got lucky and stumbled across the one I got at a price I could hardly believe at the time. Since
  then I have never seen another one for sale anywhere.

@DarkAlready done. Actually I submitted it to them the same day I offered up this version.And for what it's worth, MSE flags it as having a Trojan so I ran it through virustotal.com and it said the file was clean so I suspect that MSE is throwing a false positive.

Leasey is a set of scripts for JAWS that add a bunch of features and tools to JAWS as well as providing a controlled environment for computer beginners to help them learn to use their computers. As the beginner advances, the controlled environment can be switched off when it is no longer needed, yet all the added features and tools remain.I made the mistake of buying it, because for what it is, it's way over priced.I uninstalled it long ago and just use JAWS without it.

But it isn't alone, There are four other games in the Leasey games module that aren't available anywhere 
 else, the difference between them and Q9 is that they were specifically written for Hartgen and were never available as a stand alone product as Q9 was.What I want to do now is find the Q9 registration code that the Leasey games module writes to where Q9 needs it so that I can remove having to install Leasey just to play the game. I did buy Leasey so I believe I'm entitled to that much.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. I also disagree that Q9 is a waste of time. Side scrollers aren't my favorite type of game mainly because I'm not very good at them, but that doesn't mean I haven't enjoyed all the hours I've spent playing Q9, even if I can't beat it on easy!What I'd like to do now is figure out where the games registration data is stored so I can save it to a .reg file for future use. As it is now, to set it up I have to first install Leasey, then the games module, then run Q9. Then terminate the game with the task manager, then manually remove Leasey and the games module from my system, then finally run the Blast Bay Studio installer.If I could capture the registration data, then I could skip all the non sense  with Leasey and the games module.

I don't mind having to switch to NVDA to play a game that won't play nice with JAWS. For self voiced games or games that can use SAPI, I just configure JAWS to go into suspend mode and all is fine.For those games that need a screen reader to provide their voice, if they won't work with JAWS, then I just switch to NVDA while playing the game.So the only real problems are the Hartgen specific games written in BGT and using the JAWS specific API to provide their voice.From my own discussions with them,Hartgen's view is that since the keyboard hook conflict doesn't affect them, there's nothing to fix. And they'd only entertain having the games rewritten to use the universal text to speech APIs that use SAPI or work with any screen reader would only occur if they decided to release the games module as a stand alone package that doesn't rely on JAWS or Leasey, and frankly with their attitude towards the keyboard hook problem, 
 I just don't see that happening.

I've seen something like this too many times to count. The promises made weren't accessibility oriented, but after a while it becomes clear that the promises were made as a tactic to garner any funding they can with no real intention to keep those promises. The up and down side of this is that a developer can only pull this deception only once because after that people begin to become wise to the lie and won't support them anymore.Case in point is Steam Punk Neverland and Watch Tower Chronicles, how many of you prepaid or reserved your copies before it was released and are still waiting for them after more than a year? At this point do you really expect to get the games you paid for?And how about all those unfinished stories out there? Games where you only got the first chapter with promises of the rest of the story to come later, and then the developer quits the audio game market leaving us with just the first chapter. Examples include, Chillingham, T
 ime Adventures, Blindside, etc.The feeling is that developers think that we are such a small part of the over all market that even if we all raised our voices in protest, nobody would hear us. So they get away with it.I myself avoid the whole question by not funding any kickstarter or go fund me campains or anything along those lines and don't preorder anything. I just wait patiently for the product to become available, then buy it if I decide I want it.

The only thing that was released today was some sort of intro, none of the four episode that make up the main body of the game have been released, but you can preorder those.Me? No thanks, I'll wait for it to be released and there is actually a product to deliver. While I'll miss out on any preorder discounts that may be offered, I'll still have my money when for whatever reason the game never gets past the intro or episode 1. Not to dispute what you've said, because there was an update recently, but I'd hardly call a version 3.2 to 3.3 a major update, now if they'd released version 4.0, then I'd call it a major update.Now that you mention it I do believe the new game is a fantasy role playing game and those things don't happen overnight. Just look at what happened to Entombed, for the longest time there was rumor of a version 2 and there was even an alpha floating around for a while, but the web site has had version 1.20j as the official release for about five years now. Personally I think that development on Entombed died out long ago.Check your PM

I never said that I was promised any additional chapters for those games. Although disappointing, I'm fine with only getting the first chapter and nothing more.What annoys and upsets me is when the developers neglect to tell you that you are only getting the first chapter, you only learn that when the game ends rather abruptly. Blindside is still being sold and there is no mention anywhere that you are buying episode 1 of a multi part story, nor that the rest of the story isn't forthcoming.And even though they are no longer being sold except maybe to get rid of remaining stock, there is no mention anywhere that Chillingham and Time Adventures are only the first part of a story that now will never be finished.Omitting that information is just as much a deception as a out right lie is. It's still a deception to get your money, because if they came right out and told you that you would only be getting part 1 and that the rest of the story would nev
 er be produced, would you buy it?And then there are games like Steam Punk Neverland and Watch Tower Chronicles, that developer even went so far as to collect money for preorders for those games, and two years later, the games still haven't been released and the developer is still collecting, or at least asking for, preorders!While I agree that taking the route of being patient and watching what develops as I am doing with Code 7 is the best course. There are too many examples of things going way south.I have downloaded the prelude for Code 7 and will be trying it out later today, but I'm not going to order the rest of the episodes until they are ready for immediate delivery. I don't see anything wrong with that.

Well said Jack and Dark.Based on pass experiences developers using funding campaigns like kickstarter or asking for preorders do need to prove themselves.But, at the same time, don't go throwing new developers under the bus until they has shown that they deserve it.After my weekly backup finishes, I'll be giving Code 7's prelude a spin, if I like what I hear, I'll buy a season pass after the vision impaired version has been released.

You have to complete the orders on time and accuratelyThe problem with these games is that they are all written in BGT which has the keyboard hook conflict with some JAWS users, and they all need a running screen reader to be accessible. Normally I'd just switch to NVDA to play these games but they are all written using the JAWS API so they won't work with any screen reader but JAWS, and if you have the keyboard hook conflict they don't work even with JAWS. Hartgen doesn't care because, as they say, they don't have the keyboard hook pro
 blem.I misspoke earlier, the Leasey games module does not have any of Jim Kitchen's games in it.And finally, I was successful in finding Q9's registration data, so I can now play it without having to install Leasey or it's games module.

I see this whole debate in three or four flavors.1. Developers who want to include the visually impaired among their customers and make every effort to make their products accessible to them. The accessibility components of the product may or may not be in place when the product is launched, but if the developer is serious about their commitments, they eventually will be, all it takes is some patience.2. Developers who's products aren't accessible to the visually impaired, but the developer is willing to consider making their products accessible in future releases. Again some patience is needed, time will tell just how serious the developer is in including us in their product designs. Some developers will follow through, some won't. The best way to deal with these is to vote with your wallet by supporting those developers that are willing to add accessibility into their product designs, and boycott those who won't.3. Developers who simply r
 efuse to consider making any changes at all or give any consideration to making their products accessible. While patience won't resolve this situation, neither will verbally abusing the developer, that will just make them more determined to ignore us. The best way to deal with this type of developer is to boycott them. Besides the problems the clients frequently cause, it's one reason why I won't consider using Steam. Why should I reward Valve's very wrong attitude towards the visually impaired community by patronizing their service?4. And then there are the developers that promise great and wonderful things in the works, and then start ignoring us while at the same time taking our money for preorders that will never matterialise. Breakerbox Studios and their Steam Punk Neverland and Watch Tower Chronicles is a perfect example. He came on the forums promising all kinds of wonderful things and even said that for the low price of $25 you could reserve your c
 opies of both games. That was two years ago. Has anyone who paid the $25 ever received their games? They also said they had playable demos of their games for us to try before buying, yet at this time all of the playable demos that did exist are no longer downloadable and attempts to get a response from them regarding this have gone unanswered.The people complaining that code 7 isn't accessible on launch need to open their ear and listen for a change. There are only two people behind the Code 7 project and two people can only do so much. They aren't a Valve or an Electronic Arts with hundreds of coders available to do the work. It's just the two of them. Grow up and cut them some slack and be thankful that they are working on making the game accessible. As they have said, accessibility wasn't in the original tgame design plans. They could just as easily have ignored us and Code 7 would be for sighted players only.I for one am very thankful that I hav

Yeah, it's not just the program code's license. You'd also have to get all the other artists who aided in creating the game to sign off on the idea too. And even if you accomplished that, if the original development team is no longer available, you have to pay somebody to learn the code to remove the DRM and simply making the game open source or free wouldn't justify that cost.And at only a few bucks I consider most of these very inexpensive or free mobile apps akin to rentware anyway.The games are gone, time to move on to newer games.

Life as a blind person is challenging enough without choosing to try to use something that isn't designed to be accessible.I don't shut myself out of things not designed for the vision impaired, I have quite a few items and programs not designed to be accessible and have figured out how to use them.The primary reason I don't use Steam besides the fact that it more often than not is the source of the problem when games running under them don't work as they should, it's Valves attitude towards the vision impaired community by refusing to actively participate in making Steam accessible. That's a terrible attitude and I for one am not going to encourage it by patronizing them.No, I'll take my money somewhere else where they are more open minded and willing to be inclusive of everybody regardless of their abilities or handicaps. A good example is EA. They are at least willing to explore what they can do to make some of their games
  more accessible.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. I also disagree that Q9 is a waste of time. Side scrollers aren't my favorite type of game mainly because I'm not very good at them, but that doesn't mean I haven't enjoyed all the hours I've spent playing Q9, even if I can't beat it on easy!What I'd like to do now is figure out where the games registration data is stored so I can save it to a .reg file for future use. As it is now, to set it up I have to first install Leasey, then the games module, then run Q9. Then terminate the game with the task manager, then manually remove Leasey and the games module from my system, then finally run the Blast Bay Studio installer.If I could capture the registration data, then I could skip all the non sense  with Leasey and the games module.But, if I ever find it, don't ask me for a copy. I may not agree with what Phillip ultimately did with the game, but I will honor his decision by not distributing t
 he registration codes.

My belief is that these people start up the company with big dreams, then when they figure out the market isn't as big as they'd hoped, or that they aren't selling as many copies as they'd like, they eventually lose interest and move on to other things, sometimes, unfortunately, forgetting to take down the trappings of their old business.

Yeah, I remember all the promises they made about Steam Punk Neverland and Chronicles. Now I'm glad I never bought into preordering. Unless you're a big company who's word I can reasonably trust, I don't go in for preordering, I'd rather wait until it's a real live product, even if it costs me more. The idea being that if you have to pay for and the threat of a permanent ban may not be so appealing and thus deter cheating.Aprone's Swamp Readme wrote:When online games allow you to sign up with only a name or an email address, those games are very easy for hackers to destroy. I couldn't get it work properly. I got to the difficulty level menu then when I pressed a key I got blank, or JAWS screen reader, or nothing at all, plus as far as I could tell the key generator wasn't even there.

I believe that the only real way to deal with the cheaters is to try to get the game's developer to fix the bug that the cheaters are exploiting.Beyond that, treat the cheaters the same way Steam does, if you are caught cheating, you are immediately and permanently banned from the server, no excuses, no exceptions.

What I don't understand is, if they had playable demos, why they took them down, removing any chance that a prospective buyer could try their games before buying them.The only reason I can think of for doing that is if their games aren't as great as they claim, so that people who tried the demos, more often than not, didn't buy.

Looking for a game similar to BeJeweled

Before I lost my vision I used to waste a ton of time playing a game called Bejeweled Twist and before that Bejeweled 2.I know that both of these games are inaccessible but I'm hoping somebody has written something similar as an audio game.My favorite was Bejeweled Twist but that would be too difficult to make into an audio game so I'll describe Bejeweled 2.The game board is an eight by eight grid in which each square has one of several types of jewels in them. Your task is to look for arrangement of jewels where swapping two jewels would result in three or more similar jewels in a row. The matching row of jewels disappears and all the jewels above them drop down a square filling in the squares where the row of matching jewels used to be, The empty squares in the top row of the board get new jewels placed in them so the board is always full of jewels. Every swap must result in a matching row of at least three jewels. The game ends when there are no a
 vailable moves. There are other elements to the game but that is the basic idea.Ironically enough, I already have this game, it's called Match Maker and is one of the games that is exclusive to the Leasey games module, like Q9. The problem is it is written in BGT so the keyboard hooking conflict affects it. I'd just switch to NVDA while playing the game but it won't run unless JAWS is running. I tried first starting the game then switching to NVDA but got errors related to JAWS not running.So, does anybody know of an audio game like what I've described?Thanks!

Personally, the best advice I can offer is for everyone to just ignore threads like these. No. Dropbox blocks a file if it is downloaded by more than X number of different IP addresses, even for paid accounts. That's why the Blind Mice Movie Vault uses Sendspace. Sure, Sendspace meters your download speed if you don't have a paid account, but that is better than constantly having to delete, then re upload a file that has been blocked.

Now I've been to their web site and the only offer of a playable demo I could find was for Griff but apparently that file is gone because Sendspace returns a download error.Everything else you have to pay first before you get anything and after seeing another recent thread where someone apparently paid for Griff but never got anything, I wouldn't give them a dime.

I personally don't have any specific complaints or praise for whomever is running the place over there. But I will say this. The client tells you to notify them of any bugs or other problems you notice. My main purpose for being there was to have a way to play the 1000 miles card game, after several plays I noticed a number of bugs in the game both technical and rules of the game. I sent an email as requested, and never got any kind of reply and the bugs are still there. So I have no idea if they collected those bugg reports for later reference or just deleted them. Either way doesn't bother me any as I don't use their gaming system any more.

Yeah, I remember all the promises they made about Steam Punk Neverland and Chronicles. Now I'm glad I never bought into preordering. Unless you're a big company who's word I can reasonably trust, I don't go in for preordering, I'd rather wait until it's a real live product, even if it costs me more. At the end of the day, at least I get something for my money.Considering that you can no longer download any of their games until you've paid for them, I think their game entries in the database should changed from shareware to retail and the links to the download pages removed.

I'm not new to rogue like games, as I've played several quite frequently before I lost my vision, but back then my gaming focus was on first person shooters like Doom, Quake, Unreal, and Half Life.So I know all about choosing appropriate races to maximize a classes abilities, you don't pick a Halfling for a fighter. I also know to collect whatever's around me after a battle and reequip my characters with better equipment when it becomes available, yet I still can't get past the goblin king, and seeing that it's been stuck at version 1.20j for the past four years, it doesn't look as though there's any hope of any future development that might fix some of these problems.Anyway, I don't want this thread to become a discussion of Entombed, I have long ago given up on it and uninstalled it.

I guess they don't want my money.I decided to look into this developer further.They aren't even paying for hosting of their web site or a domain. If you look at their web site address it's breakerboxgames.webs.com, a subdomain of webs.com and if you go there you find yourself at the home page of a spam service, and subdomains don't cost anything.One thing I recall from the time when spam services were everywhere is that you aren't allowed to host files from them, so that explains hosting their demos on a free Sendspace account.I would even be willing to wager that their PayPal account is a personal account rather than a business account so they won't get charged PayPal's transaction fees.I can understand that audio games is a small niche market so getting the most out of your money a
 s a developer of these types of games is necessary, but this goes beyond belief. Probably the only reason their web site isn't already gone is because it doesn't require regular payments to keep it on line.I was interested in some of their games and might have even bought a couple of them if I could have gotten the demos to play with first. But seeing how unresponsive they are to prospective customers and how cheap they are trying to be has pretty much turned me off on considering any of their games. My primary concern is that if they are this unresponsive to generating sales, how responsive will they be after the sales should a problem arise?

Oh it adds things like multiple clipboards, a global contacts directory, internet radio, and bookmarks that not only remember the page but a specific location on the page, and other stuff.They're nice to have if you want them, I just think it's a bit over priced.And except for Q9, the games module is almost pointless.

Leasey is a set of scripts for JAWS that add a bunch of features and tools to JAWS as well as providing a controlled environment for computer beginners to help them learn to use their computers. As the beginner advances, the controlled environment can be switched off when it is no longer needed, yet all the added features and tools remain.I made the mistake of buying it, because for what it is, it's way over priced.I uninstalled it long ago and just use JAWS without it.AS far as the rumor of making the games module a stand alone product, I haven't heard that and seriously doubt that will ever happen.Even if it was made a stand alone product, I doubt there would be many buyers. One reason would be that most of what's in it is freely available elsewhere, for example it has all of the Spoonbill Blind Gamers games, the RS games client, most of Jim Kitchen's games, and Park Boss.The games that are exclusive, not available anywhere 
 else, most are written in BGT so there's the BGT & JAWS keyboard hooking conflict, and you can't get around that problem by using another screen reader like NVDA because the games are written using the JAWS API instead of the standard accessibility API that works with any screen reader, so if you are unlucky enough to be bitten by the keyboard hooking conflict most of the exclusive games are unusable. The only exclusive game that would be at all usable would be Q9 and that's because it was an outside acquisition rather than something written specifically for Hartgen.

I believe that AceFire might be written in VB6 so you'll need to be sure you have the run time modules. The easiest way to get them is to install Jim Kitchen's WinKit.If that doesn't work, you may have to install AceFire manually. Back in the 80s, well before I lost my vision, I was very much into D Every Saturday evening my best friend and I would gather together a bunch of friends and play an all night session of D Lots of fond memories from those days.Anyway, to make the task of being the dungeon master, which was usually my best friend as he was the most creative of the group, easier, I wrote a dungeon master's assistant for the Apple 2. It was an ongoing project because as we played, we'd come up with more features to add to it. Mostly it just did all the book keeping and calculating.It was an interesting project that I believe I still have the source code to, though I have no idea why I made it a point to keep it, especially since I sort of lost interest in D as the years went by.

OK, here are my thoughts, you asked for them so if you don't like them, I'm sorry.I have tried all of VG Storm's games and didn't find a single one I liked enough to pay the price they are asking for them. $5 to $10 at them most would have been more appropriate in my humble opinion.

I prefer interactive fiction in the style of Zork where you type in your commands, and pass on the multiple choice variety which I guess is called game book style.My first, and only,  experience with game books were the Inspecter Cindy series and I hated them. There appeared to be no way to preview the choices before you selected one, and there was little, if any, documentation on how to use the programs, and what documentation there was refered to keys by what they did without ever defining what key on the keyboard it was.Needing to hit the move key in order to change locations made sense, but which key was the move key, it sure wasn't the em key, all that key did was ask a question to whomever I was talking to, and who the heck was I supposedly talking to anyway. Apparently you are always talking to someone, but until you tell the game who you want to talk to, you have no idea who the game thinks you are talking to.It didn't take me long to un
 install the game as poorly written trash and to write off 7-128 software as a vendor to avoid.I'll take the Infocomm approach over that nonsense any day. At least with the Infocomm adventures you knew what the allowed set of commands were and all the puzzles are solvable without walkthroughs or hintbooks, though some of the in game clues can be a bit obscure. And the writing is extremely good.

Nope, there are no menus in the Inspector Cindy games, nor are they HTML or PDF game books, they are written in Java and use the Java Runtime Environment. As far as I could tell, the only thing you could do in the games was to ask various suspects or witnesses questions and use their answers to solve the mystery. The only action in them was you moving from one location to another to question a different suspect or witness.The first interactive fiction game I ever played was the Colossal Caves adventure, though back then, the term interactive fiction hadn't been coined yet. That wouldn't happen until Infocomm came along and ported Zork from the PDP 11 to micros of the day.So you might say I grew up on parser type interactive fiction, game books didn't even exist yet.  That is probably why I prefer them to game books, though the Inspecter Cindy experience didn't help my opinion of game books any.By the way, for those of you that have an 
 Alexa enabled device, the original Colossal Caves adventure has been ported to an Alexa skill. I am working my way through it and reliving some old memories.

@sebbyNo, that's not selfish of you at all, despite the developers assurances that it is coming, and everybody else's pre ordering it, I will wait until they actually release the blind friendly version of Code 7 before I pay anything.Waiting to see what happens before making any judgements is just plain good common sense.
