Re: Recommendations: what audio setups are you using?

I like the sound of those Beyerdynamics with the bass control. I often find I try to position my in ear phones to get it so it's not too boomy but not too washed out either. I have a pair of beyerdynamics dt100 for my music PC. Think they're particularly good for playing guitar through. They don't artificially brighten up the sound like lots of hi-fi headphones do.

I'm probably going to end up getting some sort of external USB soundcard as this PC is a small form factor type and I don't think standard PCI soundcards will fit. I don't have a clue how to determine which soundcards fit in an SFF computer, so I'll have to go for a USB AI of some sort. The trouble is they often have stuff I don't need, and not stuff I do like a 3.5mm speaker out.

I particularly meant soundcards and headphones/headsets/earphones, but if you're using an ap to enhance your audio, mention that too for sure. It occurred to me after I posted this that most people will probably be using laptops. I've always preferred a desktop for my main home PC, so soundcards are much more a user preference kind of thing. I'm so desktop-centric that I forgot they're becoming quite rare for home use .

2017-08-01 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : flackers via Audiogames-reflector

Re: a NVDA question

Is it possible to have NVDA announce links on their own line the way jaws does? For those who don't use jaws, when you arrow through a document, any link is announced as if it's on its own line, whereas NVDA announces them in the way they truly appear, i.e., if there's a couple of links in the middle of a line of text, you have to listen to the whole line then navigate to them. This means that when arrowing through a document looking for links, you have to listen to every word in a line to make sure you're not missing anything. This isn't particularly efficient when trying to find links by arrowing. I know I can use the links list, but you might get a link called download appearing lots of times and you have no idea what it refers to so sometimes you need to arrow. Having used jaws for so long, not having links announced individually when using NVDA often catches me out, and it feels a bit slow when hunting for links.

Hey, that's really cool. You play great. I'm definitely interested in getting started with e-drums. I don't expect to become a good drummer, but hopefully over a five year period or so, I might become competent enough to create decent basic drum tracks. And just trying to learn to play drums on a kit rather than a keyboard has to be generally beneficial whatever happens. Hope you won't mind if I ask you some questions when I finally take the plunge. I find it all a bit daunting with all the stuff you need. Not being able to see any pictures makes it even more difficult. I'm not sure what I need in terms of rack, mounts, stands, cables, pedals, etc. It makes my head spin just thinking of everything I'll need to get started. It seems  such a complicated set up for a mucical instrument.

I'd also say that an SSD is a must for dramatically improving speed if you don't already have one. My desktop running win 7 boots in 15 to 20 seconds with an SSD in it. They're so affordable now, and it's so easy to clone your drive and swap them over that there's no reason I can see to have an HDD. Maybe HDD's are more durable, but I haven't had any problems since making the switch a couple of years ago.

Re: New Fitbit Device for the Blind

That's the trouble with technology for the blind, it's all so over-priced. I have a pearl camera to go with the FreedomScientific's OpenBook software. It's seems to me to be just a glorified webcam and it costs a small fortune. The price of OpenBook and pearl together is outrageous, especially given OB isn't very good at all for reading books, which is ironic given that's the whole point of it. I only really use it as a convenient scanner. On the rare occasion I have to read a physical book, I scan it in OB, export it, and read it in QRead because it's a much nicer experience.Luckily I was given a copy of OB, and the RNIB gave me a grant that covered two thirds of the cost of the pearl camera, so the whole set up cost me just over 200 quid. Thank god these organisations exist to help us in Britain now local authorities have next to no money to fund what I believe are fundamental tools blind people need to live an independent life
.On the subject of the mobility watch, I experimented with holding my miniguide in a way that mimicked having it strapped to the wrist, i.e., holding it in a clenched fist so it points the same way as having it on the wrist, just a few inches lower down the arm. I actually found it works well holding it that way, and now hold it like that all the time.

Thanks, I'll check out that alesis thing. I am happy to invest in good quality pads, just I couldn't help noticing the good Roland pads come with a module that often costs a grand on its own, which I would only be using as an interface for the pads, so it feels a bit wasteful. And the good thing about the alesis thing if it works with good pads is that it would allow me to just start with a few basic pieces like kick snare hat and ride to see how I take to e-drums.The thing I've always had trouble with playing drums on a keyboard is that not being a good keyboard player, I have a hard time playing convincing fills.

Re: XLN Audio Addictive Drums 2 Now accessible

I'd love to have a go at a TD type drumkit. I've looked at them a few times, but the expense, all the extra bits you need such as stands etc, and the fact that I didn't know how hard it would be to set up and whether the module would have accessibility issues that would stop me from accessing a drum sampler, all made me chicken out. It also seemed you pay quite a bit for the module, but as a blind player, you're not really going to use the on-board kits, and instead just hook up to a drum sampler like superior or addictive. I always wished there were electric kit pieces you could just hook up to your PC without needing a module.

advice needed after clean install of windows on new ssd

I just got a new ssd for my old laptop. I formatted it and installed win 7. After installing, I found I don't have the 100mb system reserve partition, which I believe holds the boot files. I only have the C partition which is marked as active. I have two questions, why do we need the little system reserve partition, and is my plan to rectify the situation a wise one?My plan is to create a 100mb partition, and assign it a drive letter. Then open a command prompt and type: "BCDBboot c:\Windows /S X:" where X is the letter I assigned. I once had to format the system reserve partition because backup wouldn't work because of immovable files, and this is how I did it: by copying the boot files to C, then copying them back to the system reserve partition again after formatting it.What do you guys think, is there an alternative fix, and what should I have done when installing windows to create the system reserve partition in the first place? Thanks.

Been using NVDA a lot lately, but it sure seems a lot buggier than it used to be. It keeps doing this sticky key thing where if you press say escape, it'll behave as if you've pressed ctrl escape. So you can't tab or anything. Even after closing NVDA and either restarting it,or switching to jaws, the computer is kind of messed up and a restart is required. I've tried reinstalling NVDA, disabling addons, even switching the synth, but nothing seems to help. Has anyone else experienced anything like this with NVDA? I know, it's a really cynical view, and there's no escaping it. And I really don't mean to bring this topic down, but I do question the motives of companies such as MS, Apple, and Google. If they want to be utterly self-interested, okay, that's the society we live in, I just don't particularly like it when they try to tack on some apparently altruistic intent. I don't have a smart phone because I don't need one, not for privacy reasons. If I had a really active social life, no doubt I'd own one. My point about privacy was really just a comment on the kinds of devices we have today. If 20 years ago the state told us we had to all carry a device that would listen in on all our conversations and even film us in our own front rooms and everywhere else and monitor every move we make, we'd have tolde them where they can shove that idea, but that's where we are right now by desire. If you got the wrong people in power, we're in quite
a precarious position if you think about it.

Hey that seems to work thanks. It does occasionally happen with jaws, but I just don't know why it's happening so often with NVDA. It's like every other time I start it.

Re: NVDA behaving badly

I'm using win7 pro 32bit. It seems to happen whatever synth I'm using. I think it might be as cae says. It does tend to happen more after the system has just started. It also happens often if I've just shut down jaws and started NVDA straight away, so maybe the two are treading on each other's toes in some way. I know sometimes if I'm on a webpage and Jaws can't click something that I know NVDA can, and I shutdown jaws and start NVDA, it can totally lock up the system. At least now I can shake it back into life with the tip smoke j gave.

Another potential solution would be to search the entire text and arrange the finds into a list based upon the order in which they appear. Then pressing the equivalent of F3 to find next would cycle through this placemarker list rather than actually carrying out a search.

Re: jaws finding multiple arguements

Here's a way of using the if elif else idea grryfindore mentioned just for fun while Orko works on something better. It's pretty limited in its current form, but usable til something better comes along. Don't feel obliged though as I did it just for the hell of it and it didn't take long. It uses the stringContains function to check line by line, and unfortunately that function for some reason doesn't allow for optional case sensitivity, so the search is case sensitive. Also to avoid getting stuck on the same line, I simply got the script to go to the next line straight away, so this means it skips the top line of any document. I know, not great, but I couldn't think of anything better straight away, so there it is. It's limited to three search terms, but that could easily be extended. It also turns off auto forms mode at the start, but only until you switch focus then it reverts to the default. There are two scripts: an initial input box script
called MultipleFind where you enter your terms, and it then splits and stores them as globals, and then runs the multiple find next script automatically for the first time. Then there's the MultipleFindNext script itself. I used ctrl shift f, and ctrl shift f3 for these. A backwards search could easily be done, but as I don't think this will ever actually be used by anyone, I didn't go mad lol. Here they are anyway, backup your original script before letting this anywhere near it: globalsstring s1,string s2,string s3Script MultipleFind ()varstring sTermsInputBox ("Enter up to three case sensitive terms separated by grov", "Find", sTerms)If !sTermsReturnEndIfs1 = StringSegment (sTerms, "`", 1)s2 = StringSegment (sTerms, "`", 2)s3 = StringSegment (sTerms, "`", 3)PerformScriptByName ("MultipleFindNext")EndScriptScript MultipleFindNext ()varint counterSetJCFOption (OPT_AUTO_FORMS_MODE, off)NextLine ()For counter = 1 to GetLineCount ()If StringContains (GetLine (), s1)SayLine ()ReturnElIf StringContains (GetLine (), s2)SayLine ()ReturnElIf StringContains (GetLine (), s3)SayLine ()ReturnElseNextLine ()EndIfEndForSayString ("search string not found")Beep ()EndScript

Re: jaws finding multiple arguements

What it does is move line by line through the entire document. So it's the equivalent of arrowing down through the whole page. It will stop at any line containing any of the search terms, so that's where the focus will be. It then says the line to let you know it's found something. I think the focus would be at the start of the line containing the result rather than in front of the result itself. Though I've only tested it briefly on these pages using usernames as search terms. As I'm sure you're aware, loops are dangerous and can run indefinitely and lock up the PC if there's no failsafe. I used the number of lines in the document/webpage as the counter to limit the repetitions. The one thing I found screwed it up was entering form fields via auto forms mode, so that's why I had it turned off at the start. There's probably a bunch of other potential pitfalls, so it's a case of use at your own risk.Getting it into jaws depend
s on which applications you want to use it for. If you want to use it globally, it would need to go in the default.jss, but if you're just using it on the web, it would be better to put it into the .jss file for whatever browser you're using. I only tested it in IE 11, which is still what I primarily use. What you need to do is copy the text starting from globals down to the EndScript line of the second script. Open your web browser, and press insert 0 to open the script manager for that specific application. If at this point you wanted to go to the default, you could press ctrl shift d to take you there. Go to the bottom of the script file, make a blank line below the last script or function, and paste in the text. then position the cursor anywhere inside the text of the first script and press ctrl d to open the script info dialog. Press alt A to go to the key assign field, and type your preferred key command. Tab to OK, and hit space to click it. Repeat for th
e other script. Then press ctrl s to save and compile. If all goes well, you should get a nice ding and a success message. Otherwise you'll get an error message that will tell you what's wrong. To backup your jaws scripts and settings prior to making these changes  you could use the import/export feature in the utilities menu.

Re: jaws finding multiple arguements

Oh. It's referring to that line that turns off auto forms mode. It sounds like it's having trouble with a win 10 file path. I'm using Win7, but I wouldn't have thought that mattered. Unfortunately I don't have access to any PC with win10 in order to check it out.If I did have access to a win 10 computer, I'd first delete the  line that reads: SetJCFOption (    OPT_AUTO_FORMS_MODE, off). Then I'd try saving again and see if everything else is okay. Then I'd go about reinserting that particular function from within win 10. Do you want to try deleting that line and trying to save again, then let me know if it saved okay without that SetJCFOption line? Don't try the script yet though because if it enters a form field while running it'll lock up.

Re: jaws finding multiple arguements

It's easy to have an input box appear after pressing say ctrl shift f, which you can then type your three phrases separated by a delimiter, then split the three entries up and store them separately as global variables, which you can then use in say a find next script, the equivalent of F3.It would also be very easy to then let you search for either of these three phrases using say ctrl1 for the first phrase, ctrl 2 for the second etc. But I appreciate that's not what you want and I can understand why. The thing I'm having difficulty with at the moment is getting it to search for the three different phrases all during the same search. Jaws does have the capability to search for this or that using I think a double vertical bar to represent or, so you could in theory tell it to search for John or Jane, but it's not coming to me straight away how best to go about achieving that when searching an entire screen of text. And my biggest worry would be that s
cripts have to be very reliable. You wouldn't want to be thinking the screen didn't contain the words you were searching for when in fact it was the script that was at fault. That's where a lot of real usage troubleshooting comes in. I'll spend a little more time on it later, and maybe Orko or someone else might have a neat solution. Like Orko says, you could even modify the ccurrent ctrl f and f3 scripts in the jaws default script file. They're called JawsFind and JawsFindNext. But I've looked at them, and I personally would have to completely rewrite/hijack them because I haven't a clue how they're going about their business. I have rewritten a couple of Jaws default scripts such as the time script and the mouse movement scripts so it's totally doable, but you definitely would want them infallible if you're going to replace the default search function.

Re: jaws finding multiple arguements

Not sure I'd be the best person to do it, but it could definitely be done. It would depend on exactly how you wanted to search. Do you want to search for all the Johns Janes and Doe's regardless of in what order they appear, or do you want to always find John, then continue to find the next Jane, and then Doe, in that specific sequence? Jaws has a couple of built-in functions called FindString and InputBox. Whatever you type into the input box, the script could then pass it to the find string function, and it would work just like the default CTRL F search feature. So you could press say ctrl shift f to run the script, type your three words into the input box, then have the script split them up and use the find string function to search for those words. but like I said, it would depend on how you wanted to carry out the search.

It's a gamble, but you're pretty well covered by paypal. Buy a used PC with a good spec but relatively small drive, swap out the hard drive for your own SSD, and bingo bongo. I got a 2012 Dell recently. I figure that if the hardware is still working fine after five years, it'll still be working fine after ten.

I think it's a tougher problem than it first appears. The problem I keep coming up against is all the either/or methods used by jaws seem to rely on checking if the first statement is true, and if so ignoring the others. For instance if you use the find string function, you can have find john  on the first line of the script, and then, or find jane on the second. But it doesn't work because if it finds john anywhere it doesn't bother looking for jane at all. Same is true for If, ElIf, Else statements. If the first If statement is true, I think it skips the ElIf. What I don't know how to do is get it to check three different states whether any of them is true or not.

I'd need to learn quite a few new tricks to write the sort of script you're both talking about. At the moment I don't know how you achieve those things using jaws scripts.

Here they are anyway, backup your original script before letting this anywhere near it lol: globalsstring s1,string s2,string s3Script MultipleFindNext ()varint counterSetJCFOption (    OPT_AUTO_FORMS_MODE, off)NextLine ()For counter = 1 to GetLineCount ()If StringContains (GetLine (), s1)SayLine ()ReturnElIf StringContains (GetLine (), s2)SayLine ()ReturnElIf StringContains (GetLine (), s3)SayLine ()ReturnElseNextLine ()EndIfEnd
ForSayString ("search string not found")Beep ()EndScriptScript MultipleFind ()varstring sTermsInputBox ("Enter up to three case sensitive terms separated by grov", "Find", sTerms)If !sTermsReturnEndIfs1 = StringSegment (sTerms, "`", 1)s2 = StringSegment (sTerms, "`", 2)s3 = StringSegment (sTerms, "`", 3)PerformScriptByName ("MultipleFindNext")EndScript

Re: describe where your from

I'm from the North West of England, in a town about half way between Liverpool and Warrington. According to its wiki entry, it's home to the second narrowest street in Britain at just 26 inches. That always gives me a grin and makes me think of the brilliant Weird Al song: Lame Claim to Fame. It rains a lot, could do with a large injection of financial investment, which unbelievably it might be getting thanks to a crackpot scheme, and is your typical grim-up-North kind of place.

Re: a NVDA question

Jaws behaves the same way. I think the logic behind it is that if you press the quick nav key for a particular element, you know you're cycling through that element so it classes the element type as of secondary importance. Whereas if you're arrowing through a page, it puts the element type first because if a heading, or link, or whatever had lots of words in it, it would be inefficient to put the element type second. I know how you feel when it comes to headings though. I hardly ever need to know whether something is a heading or not, so it would be nice if you could switch the priority when arrowing. I wouldn't want links to be announced that way though.

I believe in progress. I also think it's a natural phenomenon. It isn't always in certain people's interests though. Scientific progress wasn't in the church's interests, so they tried to use their power and influence to hault it. The industrial revolution wasn't always in the labour force's best interests, so they tried to smash the machines that were taking their jobs. Abolition of slavery, better rights for workers etc, aren't in the factory owners' best interests, so they sling mud at those who argue for change. So we end up in a position were being a technology luddite is a foolish stance, but being a kind of social luddite is fine, wise and worldly even. I believe that trying to hault progress is ultimately futile. On the other hand, Trying to force change on society can often seem aggressive and have a counterproductive affect, but in my opinion, at least those guys are vaguely on the right trac. It's the character assassination tactics used by those who have something to lose from political/social progress that get under my skin, and that video had a full deck of it. And what saddened me was whether they're right or wrong, the young are the very people who should be pushing for social change not arguing against it. The driving force behind change often comes from the youth. I think once we have children, our priorities become almost entirely centered around providing for them financially, so a lot of our youthful ideals are abandoned. So we need the youth to argue for change. As for the idea of political correctness gone mad, I think that's mostly an idea that's highlighted and even occasionally fabricated by tabloids purely to annoy people because stimulants are addictive. I'm not too concerned classrooms will end up anything like they were in that video. People who can't spell equality won't become head of English due to political correctness, we're not quite that dumb . That was simply a negative association trick: liberals are stupid... as well as pussies, naïve, insane, hypocritical, fascists, and on and on ad nauseam. What's interesting is that a lot of these negative traits often completely contradict each other: doormats one minute, fascists the next.

I believe in progress. I also think it's a natural process. It isn't always in certain people's interests though. Scientific progress wasn't in the church's interests, so they tried to use their power and influence to hault it. The industrial revolution wasn't always in the labour force's best interests, so they tried to smash the machines that were taking their jobs. Abolition of slavery, better rights for workers etc, aren't in the factory owners' interests, so they sling mud at those who argue for change. It's the character assassination tactics used by those who have something to lose from political/social progress that get under my skin, and that video had a full deck of them. Re: Recording Music with Cakewalk Sonar X3 using SAPI5 and Behringer X-Tou

Sounds awesome. I'll be taking a serious look at it as it has a future unlike CakeTalking, which unless they do a serious overhaul, is a dead duck. The problem I have is I can write simple but effective scripts for jaws, but haven't a clue how to achieve something similar with NVDA. I'd love to use your setup with the option of also using my own scripts, but I appreciate that's not going to happen thanks to FS's outrageous pricing of jaws. So I'm torn between sticking with what I've got and seeing how long it lasts, and investing in a copy of X3 and trying out your system. Suppose there's nothing stopping me from doing both. As long as you can have two versions of sonar on the same machine.

Ditto everything Orko just said. I got a used Dell OptiPlex on eBay a month or so ago: Quad core I5 3.1ghz. Put a 1TB SSD in it, installed an OEM version of Win7 pro that I got for 7 quid or so on ebay, and I have a nippy PC for well under a hundred and fifty GBP. I hate all the stuff on win10 MS has added out of self-interest, and find it really cumbersome to navigate using a screen reader. As long as I can do everything I need to do on win7, I'll be sticking with it. Win 10 has nothing at all to make me want it at the moment. One thing I would embrace win 10 for is if tablets worked with jaws, but I tried one recently and I just couldn't get any of the touch screen gestures to work properly.

Great to see someone making up-to-date versions of sonar accessible. I'm using CakeTalking with 8.53, and I am concerned that DancingDots has no plans to create anything new, and 8.5 is so old there are bound to be plugins I want in the future that just won't work with it.I'd have a hard time leaving it at the moment though because I've spent a lot of time getting VSTs like superior drummer and Waves Ir1 and GTR accessible. Guitar rig 5 was the first vst I ever scripted, but I switched to waves GTR because it's good enough for what I want and is less hassle to use with a screen reader.I'll watch your videos when I get time, but I'm really interested to know how you made guitar rig accessible in terms of letting you know exactly which components are present in the rack. Given GR is such a graphical app in which nothing at all speaks, it was a tough nut to crack for me, and I had to write a really long-winded script to make it accessibl
e, especially being able to know which components were present in the rack after selecting a preset.

Re: Happy Net Neutrality Day of Action!

It's interesting how the concept of freedom is used politically and economically. Like freedom only ever equals good. A strong man isn't free to go next door, strangle the life out of his weaker neighbour, and take all his stuff. Yet in the economic and political worlds this kind of scenario is often portrayed as healthy, in a survival of the fittest type way. But the thing is, nature doesn't thrive on only having the strongest/fittest survive anyway, it thrives on diversity. Like the dinosaurs were the biggest strongest predators, then a catastrophe happened, and what filled the gap, timid little creatures that went on to become something remarkable that could potentially transport life beyond the solar system, allowing it to exist beyond the lifespan of the sun. So even in an economic sense, it might not be a healthy scenario to have a system where the super powerful are allowed to strangle the life out of seemingly weaker rivals.

Re: Short Demonstration of DotWalker PRO

Sounds good. I'm currently using the Trekker Breeze from Humanware, but it's been discontinued, and although Humanware say they're continuing to support it, I don't think they will as it's already difficult to buy the accessories, they just keep saying try in a week or so. So when my battery dies, it'll be useless as I think the battery is unique to the device. So I'll be looking at getting an app like this.Does the walker pro have a free roaming mode where you can just walk along a route and it will automatically tell you what street you're on? For instance even if you haven't chosen any particular route, the trekker breeze announces intersections and stuff as you approach them. Like it will say four way intersection with Johnson Street crossing Smith Street, then as you turn on to Smith Street it announces you are on Smith Street.I find it useful to have streets announced automatically. I need to have both hands free becau
se I use a cane and a little sensor device called a miniguide which is brilliant for helping to avoid obstacles without having to actually hit everything with the cane.

Re: Short Demonstration of DotWalker PRO

The trekker breeze is a flawed device for sure, and given its price it's no surprise it's been a flop, but I've been using it for 3 years, and still do every day. If you get to know its quirks, it's not that bad. The umbrella thing  was probably due to heavy cloud cover. I have it in my coat pocket or under my shirt all the time and it works the same as it does out in the open, so an umbrella shouldn't interfere with it, but thick clouds can cause problems occasionally. It has trouble finding a satellite when you're indoors, especially when turning it on for the first time after it's been off for many hours. It gets much better if it's been switched on and found a satellite in the last few hours. And it occasionally loses the plot while in a vehicle. You certainly couldn't rely on it to guide you 100% of the time.I'd say it's worst flaw, is that if it loses the satellite while moving at speed in a car or even on a b
icycle, it has a real problem reconnecting while you're on the move,. You really need to be still for it to get it's act together. On rare occasions, it can even go completely dead, and won't work at all unless you either leave it switched off for a short while, or remove the battery for a few seconds. These are the things I find least acceptable. If you were travelling around by bus a lot, and constantly going places where you needed a GPS to tell you where you were, I wouldn't recommend it at all, but for just walking around your neighbourhood, visiting family and local shops, it gives you that bit of info about intersections and stuff, and I find this makes life a little easier. I also like using it in the car and on the tandem bike to tell me where I am, but this is the environment where it's least reliable, and I wouldn't like to have to depend on it, but it still works more often than not.

It sounds like it mustn't have had a very good map installed for your region. The maps are good for Britain. When I first got it the only street it said street with no name for was a little side street with no houses on it. Updating to the latest map fixed that. I've travelled for tens of miles around my area, and even plotted a route from one end of England to the other and the maps were very good. It only says street with no name when I'm on a footpath, alleyway, or streets that have no need of a post code. Having entire intersections unknown sounds like the map was very poor indeed. It's either your region not being covered properly, or the map needed updating.

I was hoping for windows startup music at some point to let me know I was on the desktop and could run my screen reader from an external HD, but no sound at all. Last time I installed win 7 with sighted assistance, it installed most of the drivers automatically, so I had audio without having to do anything. That doesn't appear to be the case here. I have no idea if the install has failed in some way, or if just the drivers haven't installed. And like an idiot, I did this at 1 in the morning, so I'll have to wait til tomorrow to get someone to see what's happening on screen. So sadly, it's been a failed exercise.

Re: New Fitbit Device for the Blind

It's a bit strange the way they're pitching this device. Calling it a smart watch and such. As far as I can tell it's a mobility aid, but nowhere does it say that. When  I first heard it described as a smart watch, I thought it connected to the net and stuff as well as having a sonar sensor function. I can only assume they're avoiding the term mobility aid to distinguish it from other similar devices. I'd like to try it out to see if it's better than the miniguide, but I'm not convinced it would be. It'd be more convenient to have it as a wrist band rather than on a lanyard like the miniguide, but I'm not sure how much having it on the wrist would limit where you can point it. The useful thing about the miniguide is you can point it at a 90 degree angle to the direction you're walking, which is great for going around corners and stuff. As you walk around the corner, you can keep adjusting the angle until you find the straight
again. Having it on the left wrist, how easy would it be to direct the beam horizontally 90 degrees to the right across your body, and then continue to adjust it to sort of feel your way around a corner/obstacle. Imagine having a torch on the wrist and trying to direct the beam as effectively as if you had a torch in the hand. Also what happens when you're wearing long sleeves, do you have the wrist band over your clothing. That's not going to be very convenient when wearing a coat. I'd love to do a comparison of the two devices, but given the postage costs to the UK, I'd probably end up losing quite a bit of money if I had to return it. And being outside the EU, they could well decide to charge a 20% restocking fee, or even just offer me store credit, both of these has happened to me in the past.

Re: Books by Stephen King

Thought this was a new thread, then checked the date, doh. What I always say to people who haven't read King and are unsure what to expect, is that you don't get to be a proper household name as an author, especially one primarily seen as a horror writer, unless you're doing something very right. Agree about the raft, it's a really creepy story, but my favourite of his shorts is 1408. There's something really unnerving about it, and apparently he wrote the first part of it as a teaching exercise for some students in a writing class, who thankfully urged him to finish it. Haven't read the one you mentioned Dark, so will be looking that up. And also I didn't know Insomnia was a tie-in to DT. It was one of those King books I started but couldn't stay focussed on and gave up. Think I'll revisit it in ebook form in case it was a dull narrator that was the issue. I've read almost everything he's written up to the nineties. I especia
lly like his Bachman-penned works. I loved The Long Walk. Thought it was a testament to King's story-telling genius that he could keep you interested in such a simple premise with hardly any sub-plots. I wish King would write in that lean style more often. if I had one criticism of him, it's that he tends to go off on long rambling delayed gratification tangents too often, and his books end up being super marathons as a result. I think he once accused himself of having diarrhoea of the word processor. The regulators was another Bachman book I have a high regard for. I much prefer it to its Stephen King twin: Desperation. Don't know why he always seemed to write in a stripped-down style when writing as Bachman, but I really like it. His genius is still there, just with all the fat removed.

His genius is still there, just with all the fat removed.edit... I have in fact read that short story. Just didn't twig it was the one the kid tells in The Body in Different Seasons.

Re: Books by Stephen King

I think King's characters are well-drawn enough, they're just rarely very likeable. Unlike the likes of Terry Pratchett who was a genius at creating lovable characters, Stephen King's are often lacking in charm. For instance there was a lot about the Dark Tower books I really loved, and I liked Roland's character, but can't say I cared much for any of the others. Book two where he draws the three is my favourite of the series, but after that I thought the additional characters took away from the story as much as adding to it. It's no coincidence my second favourite of the series was Book 4 in which Roland revisits his youth before he met Eddie and co, and Book 1 is my third favourite, where apart from Jake who's practically the character equivalent of a rucksack, Roland is alone . For me what made the early story interesting was the idea of a lone wanderer on a mission; the last of his kind; something extraordinary. So by plucking these three new
characters out of the air, who then become as good as Roland in five minutes, it slightly took away from Roland's whole raison d'etre. The way they were plucked was awesome, and possibly the most enthralling thing I've ever read, but he should have put them back afterward and carried on alone hahah.By the way, I noticed just last night they've finally made a movie of DT. Based on the trailer, I think i'll avoid it.Sorry, I read The Mist quite a while ago and can't really comment on it other than to say I thought the idea behind it was a good one, and I know I enjoyed it.

Re: Installing Windows 7 pro 64bit

Discovered a few things I didn't know about speeding up boot time. Seems the desktop theme and background have quite an effect. I read a forum post that mentioned how a bug caused windows 7 to stay on the welcome screen for 30 secs if the background was set to solid colours. One of the workarounds was to add a registry key called DelayedDesktopSwitchTimeout and set it to 5. This helped a little, but the most dramatic change happened when I set my theme to windows 7 basic. It shaved around 15 to 20 seconds off the boot time, and jaws starts quicker too. I'll be keeping 64bit a little longer to see how it goes. The laptop still seems a little sluggish, but that's something that's not as easy to pin down as boot time.

Again, it's funny I don't remember any of those stories except survivor type, which I remember quite well. It reminded me there's a vsauce video in which Michael tries to answer the question of whether it would make sense to do what the surgeon in survivor Type did. Rewatching it a second time, it's the least satisfying of the subjects/explanations in the video. He also addresses the viability of a Ringworld type scenario. Don't think he's the first geek to poke holes in Larry Niven's most famous work though heheh.

Not wishing to be the sort of person who poo-poos the feasibility of story ideas, I'm quite happy for fiction to exercise a bit of creative license, and Survivor Type is just a damn good tale, but it reminded me there's a vsauce video in which Michael tries to answer the question of whether it would make sense to do what the surgeon in survivor Type did. Re: a NVDA question

I had no idea you could type multiple letters like that. I suppose there's some sort of time delay script like double clicking the mouse, or checking the date with a screen reader. Interesting checking it out just now, it wouldn't work if the file had the same letter twice at the start.

It explains why I sometimes get a ding when using first letter navigation and hit a different letter too quickly. Interesting checking it out just now, it wouldn't work if the file had the same letter twice at the start.
