Using braille to play interactive fiction, is it possible? Hi everyone,Was hoping someone on here might be willing to help with this. I have a giant collection of zcode text adventure games that I used to play on my Braille Note back in the day. Sadly, said Braille Note has since kicked the bucket, and I was hoping to be able to play these games on my computer or phone, using my braille display to read the output. Does anyone know if this is possible? Is there any interpreter out there that can do this? I thought it would be a simple matter of downloading Windows Frotz and hooking it up to NVDA and my Braille Edge, but apparently this doesn't work... Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks,Locutus. A hero's call, bizarre (and mildly amusing) game behavior. Hi all,Was wondering if someone might be able to help me solve this very odd problem I'm having. I just installed A Hero's Call on my computer so I could have something to play while on a flight. However, once I got past the first battle with the wolves, to a point in the game where I could actually move about, I discovered that moving was impossible. For reasons beyond my understanding, it seems like the buttons to turn 90 degrees are stuck down. This effectively results in my character spinning like a top, and my being inundated with a constant stream of direction facing notifications. The keys for walking forward or back, or for sidestepping left or right do seem to be working. However, pressing shift+s or Shift+f does absolutely nothing to slow or stop this relentless spinning, and neither does using the mouse to change my direction.Using a fresh copy of the game hasn't helped fix the problem. Also, this issue is only happening on my second computer, a 2018 Dell XPS 13. When running the game on my Asus gaming rig, everything is running fine. Anyone have any thoughts on what might be going on?All my best,Locutus. Decently described Portal playthrough Hi folks. I was wondering if anyone here knows of any let's plays of the game Portal that have a decent amount of description of what's going on while playing? I know next to nothing about the game, and every let's play I've found only has general commentary, but that still leaves quite a lot unclear... So I figured I'd ask here before plunging into a deeper search of YouTube. Any help would be much appreciated, as I'd love to know more about the game than the creepy computer... Craving a naval warfare game... Hey all,So, I wish this topic was to announce the creation of such a game, but alas, my programming skills simply don't exist. That said, I've recently been reading at least two series that are, at least in part, about naval warfare of one kind or another. For anyone curious, said series are David Weber's Safehold series, and Taylor Anderson's Destroyermen series. Anyways, I've been absolutely fascinated by how naval battles work, and also about the ships discussed in the books... And while looking up various ship classes on YouTube, it occurred to me how amazing it would be if we had an audiogame focusing on that sort of thing. Yes, I know, Lone Wolf is still out there, and that's a great concept, old as it is. That said, it could be taken so much farther! One could play a campaign mode that takes you through commanding various different kinds of vessels, from different destroyers, to subs, to aircraft carriers! There could be a first-person p ilot perspective, or a realtime based captain-like interface where you issue different orders to different members of your crew. There could be weather, all sorts of enemies, varying sea features... Heck, perhaps even a ship and mission creator for online play and such!I would totally pay for such a game, and believe it would provide hours and hours of fun! Any of our various developers out there interested in such a project? I'd be totally willing to sharpen up my sadly neglected sound design chops for this! Re: Can we talk about how awesome Manamon is? I must admit, I'm quite astounded at the negativity surrounding this game, and couldn't agree more with Trajectory's comments, even though I'm not nearly as serious a gamer now as I used to be. On the other hand, want to know why I'm not a serious gamer any more? Precisely because the art of audio game making seems to be focused so much more on quick fixes/short and sweet time wasters, text-based games, and online open world design, rather than depth, plot development, and quality of content combined with the power of audio design. Sure, Manamon was a Pokemon clone. Sure, the plot is sort of shallow. But you know what? The game makes up for that by being engaging, and taking you through quite a journey indeed! All that while designed by a small team, and still providing many hours of intrigue, excitement, suspense, and general enjoyment. More to the point, this game contributes to a very, very small pile of such games in this particular style, and I will t ake it, and its preset but clearly defined story over an aimless, make it up as you go online open world sort of rig any day. Call me old-fashioned, but I can never enjoy small, five-minute games, text adventures, or online multiplayer games in the way that I enjoyed the hours and hours of watching and helping my dad play through all the classic single-player survival horror games, solving puzzles, figuring out the stories... And Manamon offered me a chance to do all of those things, but do them by myself. Here's hoping there's more where that came from in the future. In fact, with some new exceptions like Manamon, Paladin of the Sky, Entombed, the BK games, and a few others I'm not thinking of right now, lack of story is one of audio games' greatest weaknesses. Suggestion, rather than the boing sound you get when he swings to either side, you can record some vocals of someone pretending to fall to either side. Then when he stands up straight again he can maybe do a "phiew" sound or something like that. Other things that might be entertaining to implement if you can would be maybe him throwing up if he goes down a slope too fast, after which he would be dizzy and more likely to swing left or right. Re: Why don't you like multi-player games? This probably won't help you much... But my answer is rather brutal in its simplicity. I don't like multiplayer games because, unless it's a fighting-type game or something, I point blank don't like playing with other people. In fact one of the thing that draws me to a nice, long, story-driven single-player game is the ability to bury myself in that game and rely entirely on it, and my own imagination/creativity/skills, to make it fun for me, with others totally erased from the equation. I know, I'm giving off a terribly antisocial vibe here, but I'm not. I love people, I love spending time with people, in moderation at least. I just don't want others interfering with my playing, at all. Game cravings... Hey all. Hope you guys are doing well. Im writing this because I got to thinking about some kinds of games I wish I could play, and it got me to thinking... What our audio game community is truly lacking in is a seriously long, deep, horrifyingly freaky thriller. A story-driven, first-person survival horror game. Im not talking about your typical zombie or monster flick like Shades of Doom, either. Im talking about something far more involved, far more thriller-like, far more psychologically engaging and fundamentally terrifying. Something like the Silent Hill games, particularly the first or third in that series. Or maybe something like The Last of Us. True, those games did have plenty of zombies and monsters, but what made them so thrilling was their setting, the circumstances surrounding their plots, and how they made you feel so deeply involved in them, even as a more passive listener. I wish I could actually be able to play something like that!OF cour se, I do realize something of that great a scope probably isnt practical considering our resources, but even still, it seems to me like no one has really explored that particular genre of games as much in the audio game world. At first I thought Swamp might turn into something like that when it first came out, but then Swamp took the multi-player route instead. Not that Im bashing Swamp, Ive had tons and tons of fun with that game! The closest to what Im talking about, however, was actually Dannys DeathMatch Project Alpha game. I was so totally enthralled by that game, its constantly moving storyline, the suspense of exploring those great environments, not knowing what would happen next, when a group of monsters would come growling towards you, or, my favorite, when tentacles would come bursting out to grab you! I would be so incredibly grateful for any other games with that level of storyline and total, profound immersion.Id be interested to hear any thoughts on this. Are others interested in this style of games? Would any developers be willing to test these waters? Re: Abe's oddysee new and tasty Its so cool to see how little has changed audio-wise! I used to watch my dad play Abes Exoddus back in the day, and was fascinated by the game. And this one sounds like its got actual accurate stereo positioning for objects! Cool! Re: getting back into alter aeon Thanks for the words of encouragement, Jayde. Im back online now, and am slowly figuring out how to play this game again, bit by bit. I have a question though. Im at Dragon Tooth now, and am thinking of heading into the dark forest. Curious thing though. Once I get out of the town, none of the paths have any sort of descriptions to them, and I seem to recall they used to when I was there last. I dont have brief mode enabled, so it cant be that... Any thoughts on what it could be? Re: getting back into alter aeon Question. Does your inventory get erased after a while of not logging in? It seems Ive lost pretty much everything I owned as Vastator, with the exception of what Im wearing. No gold whatsoever either, which is what makes me wonder about it being erased, as opposed to someone taking all my stuff when my floating disc winked out... Re: getting back into alter aeon Dentin, I believe that Vastator, my primary character, got to about level twenty-four or twenty-five necro before things started getting out of control. I might be off by a few levels either way, its been a while. But yeah, at that point I started being invited into more group-related stuff... But once the heat of that wore off, I found myself becoming rapidly overwhelmed whenever I tried to go out by myself.Mind you, the more I think about it the more tempted I am to go back in there, if for no other reason than to see all the new stuff thats been added. Maybe Ill try to return to some more familiar territory, just to get my bearings, then see if I have any better luck soloing this time around. Re: getting back into alter aeon Ive been tempted to return there myself, but the idea of relearning all the quirks of the game, plus all the aliases I made, is rather discouraging. Plus, lets not forget the reason I stopped playing in the first place, which was a feeling that, after I got to a certain level in the game, I basically couldnt keep advancing as a solo player any more. Grouping can be interesting for a bit, but the sped-up, blurry way that the game progressed for me from that point onward made me just leave. I guess this is why I generally prefer first-person, plot-driven games with a storyline rather than multiplayer, team-oriented gaming. Accessible Yugio games anyone? Hey there folks,Im not sure if this has been asked before... It probably has, considering how big this place is. Regardless, Im in the process of going through a massive Yugio TV episode marathon, and it made me wonder if there are any accessible Yugio games out there. I do know about the online text-based game that came out a few years ago, and that ones pretty cool... Im just wondering if there are any more. Perhaps ones with more cards and, hoping against hope here, actual sound effects? All the best,Albano URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=198593#p198593 ___ Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector

Skynet Takedown: A Technoshock mod Hey there folks,After a while of not producing anything, I finally have for you all a new mod, this one for the rather aged but still awesome game Technoshock. I actually created this mod over two years ago, but somehow forgot all about it until I accidentally ran across it earlier today. The changes in the games sounds are comprehensive, and there are even some new additions which I profoundly hope. Feedback on this is always welcome. Enjoy! Re: You are stuck in the dungeon of despair! Four thoughts come to mind.First, there might be a way to make it so that the echo of your footsteps changes subtly as the wall in front of you grows nearer.More practically, you might make it so that the last step or two before the wall have a different sound, perhaps dirt instead of tyle or something similar to let you know youre near the wall.Another way is so that youd have some sort of radar system which would ping a wall a certain distance in front of you. Personally Im not a fan of that idea, beeps take away from the atmosphere of a game like this. Finally, theres always some sort of computerized navigator option, which would tell you, actually tell you, when youre coming up to a wall.Hope that helps.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=178561#p178561 ___ Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector
