Re: cant select espeak as windows default voice

The reason this isn't working right for you is probably this. By you saying Espeak I'm guessing you installed the old SAPI espeak off source forge. That version, like a few people have already said, is 32-bit only so will only show up in the 32-bit SAPI control panel and work in 32-bit apps. And as it happens, Sequence storm is a 64-bit app so even if you'd have set your voice to espeak it wouldn't work there and just cause the voice to get reset back to something else (what Nidza07 was describing). Unfortunately, the state of Espeak on Windows these days outside of NVDA is pretty terrible. I'm guessing the current maintainers of EspeakNG are Linux users, because while EspeakNG regularly gets updates, the SAPI implementation hasn't been touched in years. It can be in theory installed and will show up in some, but not all apps, but in the apps it does show either doesn't speak at all and crashes, or speaks a bit of the text, then gets cut off and stops.

Re: experiences with the Sennheiser Ambeo smart headset?

I have one of these and it's amazing. The reason they're getting so cheep is that Sennheiser discontinued them so people are just selling out stock, they used to be much more expensive. I got a pair for about 90 euros and didn't think twice about it then, for 40 it's a steal. For a demo recording, I haven't managed to capture anything interesting yet, but This video from Andre Louis is a pretty good demo of how impressive they can get.

Re: what realy was with nvda translate addon?

To those of you who use this ad-on to live translate books while you read them, please stop because you're hurting everyone else. The reason the ad-on is so unreliable is most likely because of API call limitations. If Google gets a lot of requests, they temporarily block access to the API either globally or for your IP address as a form of abuse protection. Repeated blocking like this could eventually result in the ad-on breaking all together. If you want to read a longer piece of text, like a book or a readme, consider using the actual google translate site, either with the upload function or the built-in translation feature in Chrome. This will not only be far more reliable, but also give you bhetter results since the translator will be aware of entire paragraphs rather than single lines or sentences.

Re: autocorrection, dictation and other wonderful, terrible experiences

Yeah, you really, really want to proofread your dictations. No matter what language you're using and what you're writing. The number of people who don't, and then just hit send is just insane. Applevis is a prime example where you'll see this often, but if you've been on Twitter or mailing lists you'll see plenty there also. First one that comes to mind for me is how a person on Applevis was praising their iPhone 6 ass, how much of an amazing device it was. Well that comment would suggest otherwise! . I've also seen someone on the Dectalk mailing list writing it out as "Dick talk" instead, which although I'm sure is a very interesting topic is probably not relevant for that mailing list. As for me, I'm fairly sure I had a number of these over the years but since forgot most of them, also because they were caught before being sent. One small and amusing one that wasn't though was when I got my first smartphone and started using foursquare. Being able to dictate was such a fun gimmick back then that I wanted to do it every time even though that phone also had a keyboard. So we went to the shopping mall for lunch and to pick up a copy of Mortal Kombat 9. So, I checked in and dictated "getting food and Mortal Kombat". Fast forward a few months, I'm scrolling through my old tweets and... Turns out my check-in actually said "Getting food *In* Mortal Kombat". That would have probably been far more entertaining! XD

2020-10-25 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : pitermach via Audiogames-reflector

Re: questions about Spotify

Spotify accessibility these days is pretty decent, especially on mobile. There are occasional situations where things did break for VoiceOver, for example a recent update briefly made the button to expand the now playing screen invisible to VO meaning it was impossible to go into the full-screen player view, but if such issues come up they're fixed just as quickly in about a week or less. The desktop app is OK for the most part, with the exception of the menus which I really hope will eventually get some love. A few years ago I saw tweets from an engineer who was assigned to work on desktop spotify accessibility and he said the menus were on the list of things to fix but I'm not sure if anyone looked at them since. That being said, regardless if you're on Windows or Mac the way you deal with them is like a few people said, go to the bottom of the page and do a simulated mouse click on the text. Some menus, like the one to add tracks to a playlist, are submenus meaning that as soon as you root your mouse to them the page will change on you with more options even before you click but if you keep that in mind you should be good. All that being said if I'm planning to add a lot of songs to a playlist I do it on my phone where this is much more reliable to do since every song just has a "open menu" action and you can find the add to playlist option there. On the playlist itself there's also an add songs button which will let you do a search, then go through the results while having buttons to play a 30-second preview of the song or add it to the list with one tap.

Re: Why should I use music streaming services

2020-10-04 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : pitermach via Audiogames-reflector

Re: Why should I use music streaming services

As far as Spotify vs Apple Music, a lot of it comes down to personal preference. Apple music integrates a lot better with iOS than Spotify does, and they now also have a web app and it can be used in iTunes if you like it. Personally I found the recommendation system not as good as Spotify's but you might like it. They share a lot of features in common, but they also have some slight differences. The same could be said for YouTube music, which also gives you the added benefit of no ads and background playback for the mobile YouTube app if you go for the premium package. I considered switching to it from Spotify, but unfortunately even though it also has a pretty good machine learning powered recommendation system there were a number of lesser known EDM artists that were on both Spotify and Apple but not YouTube leaving a number of my liked music out. YouTube's Sonos integration was also lacking, missing some really common controls like liking/disliking tracks or starting some of the AI playlists. With Google's previous music service, you could also use the official Google play music app to control Sonos, like you can with Spotify, but YouTube music never got this feature and Google keeps saying it'll be coming. It has been like this for over a year and that situation with missing features that were included with Google's previous service, promiced for this new one, but not delivered on yet, sums up YouTube music pretty well in a nutshell, all the while Google is shutting down Play Music forcing everyone into YouTube making a bunch of people annoyed.Tidal, it's a service which is promoted rediculously hard over here. They have partnerships with almost every ISP and mobile carrier in Poland, giving away 6 month service with almost any package while also making data transfer from Tidal free. The big selling point it has going for it is their Hi-Fi plan, which offers you losless streaming in Flac. Apart from that, the recommendation system was nothing to write home about last time I checked, it was pretty basic, but the music catalog was pretty decent. The far more serious problem with Tidal is that, saying it nicely, the accessibility is pretty bad. The website and desktop app was a pain to use, the iOS app was OK ish but from what I heard it later got some major regressions and I'm not sure what the state of that is now. If you want losless streaming, you'll definitely want to look at Deezer, which also offers Flac streaming with far nicer, more accessible apps and a decent recommendation system to boot, plus very good Siri, Google Assistant, Alexa and Sonos integration. They also have a shazam like feature in their mobile app so you can have it listen to your microphone to identify a song in the real world. Deezer is the service I got into streaming with, the only reasonI switcvhed is because my friends moved to Spotify and we wanted to keep sharing playlists. But it's also not a bad choice at all.

Re: Why should I use music streaming services

Slight correction: Siri does actually let you play from Spotify now. You have to specifically ask for it, but as long as you do it works.Compared to just playing music on YouTube, the quality will be considerably higher, 320KBPS MP3, Ogg or AAC depending on whether you go with Spotify, YouTube music or Apple music or even losless Flac on Deezer or Tidal. You'll also not get any ads, which can be especially annoying when you're on mobile where there isn't an easy way to block them. The artists will also actually get payed whenever you listen to a song, though how much they get payed, even before the label gets their cut could be much, much better than it is now but that's a discussion for another time. The services also give you some pretty cool features, like being able to search for other people's playlists, or make your own and work on them with friends. You can also follow your favorite artists, and get notified when they release something new. All the services also include a music recommendation system that will learn from your listening history. Spotify in particular is really good at it, and after a week of listening it should start offering you playlists with music they think you'll like which will often be very accurate. So a lot of it is just down to convenience. Being able to quickly find almost any song out there is really cool, and so is the recommendation system - which is what made me start using them. Of course, nothing is perfect, you don't actually own your music even if you download it for offline listening. Occasionally, you may find that a song will disappear from the site you're using as some licensing contract expires or gets transfered. And of course, if you stop paying, you'll lose access to all of your saved songs (though some services like Spotify or Deezer have free tiers that will still let you play things in lower quality and ads with some features disabled.

Re: Password managers, iOS, and accessible autofill

The way that it works depends. There are 3 contexts I've seen password autofill popp up. First, sometimes iOS will just detect you're on a screen with a login form, and if it finds a matching password in your manager it'll pop up a rather large window near the bottom of the screen offering you to log in. If it doesn't realise this, tapping on either the username or password field to pop up the keyboard should work. Explore directly above the first row of the keyboard, where you normally see autocomplete suggestions pop up. Again, if it finds a matching log in, then it'll just give you a button here saying what username and site the suggestion comes from and you can just tap on it to autofill. If it can't match it to anything, you should still see a "passwords" button that'll take you into your vault so you can manually select the correct password. As far as using alternative apps, for the actual autofill process all of them work the same way since they tap into the dedicated iOS autofill API, so this part of the process shouldn't be any different whether you use StrongBox, OnePassword, BitWarden or anything else that says it supports the iOS autofill API.

That message basically just means that Windows uploaded its activation status to your microsoft account for that computer. So, if you were to completely wipe that computer, maybe even swap a drive or two, install Windows from scratch skipping entering a key during install and log into a microsoft account, you should find that windows automatically reactivated itself. This is saved for each computer individually. And while we're on the topic, something else that might be helpful is that any computers that came bundled with Windows 8 or later will have their key embedded in the firmware. So if you were to install windows from scratch on one don't be surprised if the installer doesn't even ask for a key, and this is still true if you install Windows 10 on a computer that originally had something older since upgrades were free. Of course, that key will match the edition of Windows that was included - which will most likely be Windows home unless it's a really high-end business computer. If you later decide to upgrade that installation to Pro, this is when the license being tied to your account will come in handy since immediately after you reinstall and sign back in Windows should just upgrade itself.

Re: i'm getting a new computer soon, how to move my data to it

The fastest way I can think of is just using network sharing. Do this only if you're at home and have a secure Wi-Fi network.First of all, for this to work, your Windows account needs to have a password. If it doesn't go and add one. Then, in Explorer, navigate to a folder that you want to share. This could either be just your user folder, your downloads or even your entire C drive. Go to its properties, and on the sharing tab just go to the advanced sharing button. Here you just check the checkbox to share the folder, you can then give it a name and configure the permissions for the share (by default it's set up so that you can not only read but also write and delete files!).When you get your new computer, to access the share, in the run dialog or the address bar in explorer, type in 2 backslashes followed by your old computer's name. Windows will then ask you to log-in. This is why you needed to have a password on your account. Enter your username (if you're logging in with a microsoft account your username is whatever your folder under C:\users is called) and your password, you can also optionally check the box to have Windows remember these for next time. And that's it. You should now see any folders you shared and you can work with them the same way you would with any other file, so you can just hit copy and paste them into any location on the new computer. Obviously for this to work both computers need to be on and connected to the same network. Also, these transfers should be rather fast and not effected by how fast your internet connection is as the two computers are talking to each other over the local network so the internet is never used if you're doing this, other than going through your router to find each other.

Re: Don't upgrade to NVDA 2020.1 if you use discord

So I started writing this huge wall of text about how it is truly broken and I even found a workaround... only to realise it's not actually too bad, it just behaves differently.A recent change in NVDA 2020.1 is that it now reports selected items of a list box while you're in browse mode, I guess this also effects trees. The result of this in Discord is that, instead of focusing the tree, NVDA now focuses its first item. So as soon as you arrow onto the server tree, your focus will be on the first server entry, so instead of pressing enter like before, just go turn off browse mode with NVDA+Space, and then you should be able to arrow through all your servers just like before. The one quirk I noticed with this is that it always focuses the first server instead of the one you were on, though it may have very well been like this before and I forgot. Anyway, hopefully this should get you going again

Re: new newb with an ear on native musical things...

Adding new plugins to the browser involves 2 steps. The first is installing the plugin, like xpand or dexed, into a place where the komplete software can find it. By default it searches in 2 folders, c:\Program Files\Native Instruments\VSTPlugins 32 bit\ and c:\Program Files\Native Instruments\VSTPlugins 64 bit. So you can either put your plugins there, or add more paths to scan, which you'll either need to do with sighted help or I heard there's an autohotkey script to click on the right option. Myself I just took the easy way out and installed xpand and dexed into the previously mentioned folder. The second step is getting the NKS presets and unzipping them into the right folder. The NKS presets for both xpand and dexed can be gotten from here. The downloads come with detailed instructions where to unzip them. Finally, run the komplete software again, which will cause it to scan for any new presets, and you should be good to go, your plugin should now appear in the user library in the browser.\For loading dexed cartridges, the freelance NKS pack for it comes with over a thousand presets and to my understanding the expansions are included. For patches that come as a .syx file, you're supposed to drag it into the dexed window which is going to be really hard to do. but I heard that, at least if you're using reaper, you can just insert the .syx file as an item onto the track where you have the plugin and play it which should load the patch because syx files are just a sequence of midi commands.

Re: new newb with an ear on native musical things...

I'm fairly new to the world of Komplete myself, having bought into the ecosystem with an M32 a few weeks ago, but hopefully I can clear some things up best as I can, mainly by trying to answer post 7 because you're asking the right questions Komplete Kontrol itself is a piece of software that in comjunction with the komplete kontrol keyboards, lets you access various plugins from one place. This of course includes all of Native's own stuff like Kontakt, massive and so on, as well as third party plugins that choose to integrate with them. Komplete Kontrol itself appears as a VST instrument that you load into a track into your DAW, and it provides its own browser, accessible from the keyboard, that then lets you load up an instrument. And this is where the first big convenience factor comes in, because in addition to browsing your presets one synth at a time, you can choose to instead browse them by a sound category (IE you select that you're only interested in hard, distorted bases and Komplete will give you every such patch that you have from across all installed plugins). The other big reason why so many people are jumping on-board this bandwagon is that this preset browsing interface makes it possible to access presets of normally completely inaccessible plugins (IE xpand2) or ones that would normally require a lot of OCR or specialised scripts like Kontakt. In the case of Kontakt, any library can be added to this kontrol browser, for other plugins, they have to be NKS compatible to show up. And this is what the NKS standard means, that your plugin can be used within komplete, as well as providing parameter mappings for the knobs on the keyboard. Most of the time, NKS support is something done by the manufacturer of the plugin/library, but there are also people who add it in for other plugins, like freelance sound labs who have done it for the previously mentioned xpand as well as a ton of other synths.Speaking of the parameters, this is the other big reason so many people get Komplete, because it makes adjusting them really easy. The keyboards have 8 touch sensitive knobs that let you adjust various parameters of a patch, which are further grouped into pages. So, for a sampled piano you might have 1 page for adjusting volumes of various microphones, the sounds of the keys and pedals, a separate page for modifying the attack and decay of the samples and a further one for adjusting effects like reverb and delay. While these parameters are all also accessible under parameter automation, they're grouped more logically here and you can adjust them without moving your hands away from the keyboard. When you touch one of these knobs, you get told what you're adjusting, though annoyingly not what the new value is. Some people prefer this, I personally wish I could hear it sometimes because it may not always be apparent what you have something set to particularly with parameters that have only a handful of settings. Also, which parameters are mapped varies wildly from plugin to plugin, and this even applies to native instruments own offerings. As an example, both Monark and Prism which are both synthesizers, allow you to adjust just about everything - parameters for each oscilators, the LFOs, and effects, while FM8 and massive only expose the most basic parameters like ADSR so if you were expecting being able to tweak every operator individually and build a patch from scratch you'd probably be really disappointed. Thankfully, the NKS library forDexed, which is another FM synth similar to FM8 but free, includes over 20 pages of parameters exposing every parameter for every operator. So when you consider buying a plugin, it's a good idea to do research, first of all to see whether it has NKS compatibility or not and if it does how deep it goes. Thankfully there are now sites cropping up, like kk-access and nksftw which also has a companion YouTube channel, that review plugins with NKS to see how good their implementation is.So in summary, while I'd say that the komplete ecosystem is far from perfect, and definitely has shortcomings that should be addressed, it does make many plugins that would normally be very hard if not outright inaccessible to use, into ones that can be accessed quite pleasantly, and Native is very slowly but surely improving the software accessibility. It kinda sucks that we require a certain, specific controller to use software that sighted people can use with any setup, but it's an option we didn't have a few years earlier and to be fair the controller itself is quite good.

Re: recording assistance

Re: recording assistance

Hi Dark,Definitely go through the articles UltraLeetJ linked to. I'll try to explain some of the things that are confusing you at the moment.- Setting up your microphone - in Reaper's preferences under the audio device, you'll want the audio system option set to wasapi and the mode to set to shared. These are the most modern options that will give you the least latency with what you're working with. Then set your input and output devices to your USB mic and headphones respectively. And while we're here, if you change the mode from shared to loopback, this will record every sound on your system even if you don't have a stereo mix feature if you want to record gameplays or other things, just remember to set it back when you're done. Now, to actually record. Let's start by importing your backing track. First, press CTRL+Home to make sure you're at the beginning of the project, Osara will probably say bar 1 when you do this. Now, press CTRL+T to make a new track and give it a name like accompaniment. Then go into the insert menu and choose media file, or press the insert key twice quickly. This will let you load your backing track in. When the file is loaded, your cursor is automatically set at the end, so to hear it you'll need to press CTRL+Home to go back to the beginning and then when you press space it should start playing. Pressing space again *stops* the playback, meaning that your cursor will be back at the beginning, while CTRL+Space is a play and pause.- Now, to record, make a second track, exactly the same way as the first. Pressing up and down will move you between tracks in your project, so make sure you're on the second. Then, press F7 to arm it, and F8 to turn on the monitoring. Arming a track tells Reaper that you want to record on it, you can think of it kind of like releasing the safety on a gun, so you don't accidentally record over something you don't want to. Finally, once again make sure you're at the beginning of the project, or the place where you want to start, and press R to begin recording. You should hear record and the accompaniment will start playing. When you're finished, press R again or space to stop and confirm that you want to keep your recording. Finally, just like after inserting, your cursor will be at the very end, so to hear your recording you'll once again want to CTRL+Home to the beginning and space to play. And that's the basics. For the details, like how to edit your performances, read through the article above. Reaper is one of these programs that's extremely powerful but also incredibly overwelming at first. But it has a really large and active user base, so feel free to ask if you need any additional help.

Re: Good and accessible alternative media player that organizes your music

+1 for Foobar 2000. I'm not sure what you mean by ad-on, if you mean an NVDA ad-on or JAWS scripts, you really don't need one as Foobar is all standard Windows controls. If you ment things like plugins to play other file formats or add effects, then yes, it has loads of those. For shuffle, it has a couple of modes. You can either shuffle tracks, so it'll just play tracks in a random order, or you can shuffle by album at which point it'll shuffle through albums but play the tracks in the right order.Foobar's library is also incredibly easy to use and powerful. You tell it what folders your music is in in the preferences, and then you can sort your music either by the usual tags like artist, album, genre and so on, or just by displaying the folder structure if your tags suck or you have a prefered way of organising music. Plus, you have the option to move files if you want to reorganize your music based on tags or rename your files, you can convert between different file formats, and rip CD's with the option to download song information from the internet. The only thing which can be a bit confusing when you're starting out with foobar is that by default it doesn't have any keyboard shortcuts configured to control playback, so if you decide to try it out the first thing you'll want to do is head to the keyboard shortcuts section of preferences and configure them. Once you do that, you should be good to go.

You can find the information repository Here on GitHub. In particular, you have a sample settings file with configured volumes, an example configuration profile with remapped settings, and on the wiki section I wrote up a detailed getting started guide that describes the most important settings you should change (including the microphone type), what all the buttons do and such. Re: Does anyone have the Go Xlr microphone mixer?

I was under the impression that the Mini still had the motorized faders, but it turns out not.The main differences are that you don't have all the extra effects like the reverbs, pitch shifting and auto-tune. You also don't have the sampler. Both of those things take up a substantial area of the unit because they have a number of buttons and knobs associated with them, so the mini is physically a lot smaller as a result. However, you still get the basic microphone processing effects - compressor, gate, EQ and all the other features and ports. So, if you know you won't need the extra effects, the Mini is still a great choice and costs considerably less than its big counterpart

We also have contact with the developers so it's also likely the software will be fixed

I haven't looked into Dolphin in a while, but I remember seeing on their progress reports they were migrating away from WX to QT. WX is great for accessibility, but also often a pain to program for which is why a lot of developers move away from it. That being said, in most cases these days QT shouldn't be completely inaccessible. The experience wouldn't be as pleasant as WX in a number of aspects, but you should still be able to use it unless they're using a really old version of QT that doesn't include the accessibility support by default. Or have they switched again to something entirely different?

Going just by that file size it does sound like the book just has scanned in page images. If that's the case your only real option is to run OCR on this book with software like FineReader. But at that point you definitely don't want to buy from the iBooks store as any purchases there have DRM so you couldn't export it out into any OCR software on either desktop or mobile.

Find the folder that's giving you trouble and go into its properties. You should see a combo box asking what it should be optimised for - music, documents, general items or videos. Set it to general items and check the option to apply these settings to any subfolders. That should give you the typical columns. That being said, like Haily said, I would suggest using something other because Explorer, ever since Vista, has been getting slower. I personally use Total commander which takes ages to configure just right but is great once you do. Xplorer2 isn't something I used personally, but know a couple of people that do and like it. It'll probably be much easier to get going with than TC.

Re: Have you ever tried Brave Browser?

I have also been using it for a few months and love the experience for the most part. The built-in ad blocker is great and you have control over things like autoplay blocking which regular Chrome doesn't provide. The last version also added a built-in feature that lets you view a page in the internet archive wayback machine if you land on an error page.I still keep chrome around though, mainly for the sites where I need the image descriptions feature that Chrome recently introduced (Brave still has the options, but it always returns no description which I guess is because they don't want Google to get any more data). It also doesn't have a built-in translation feature (it'll offer to download a very old legacy google translate extension for you if it detects a site in a different language, but that just redirects you to the website rather than translating seemlessly).Regarding the rewards, sadly doing it independently is pretty much impossible at the moment, because to claim the rewards you need to solve a captcha involving dragging an image onto a target. I reported why this is a bad idea here but for now not much happened in this area. So for now, unless you want to get BAT tokens with real money, I would either turn the ads off or ask for sighted help or maybe use the free 5-minute aira calls to have someone assist you with claiming them.

I don't remember seeing this with Discord specifically because I raerly use my Mac these days, but I ran into this with another Electron app a few weeks ago where I had a lot of issues trying to get the VoiceOver cursor to see the application. So I suspect the issue is something related to something that was broken in Electron which is what Discord is built on.

Re: Getting rid of the V Virus

Yep. It's a virus that made the rounds through some shared folders, it travelled pretty far in the blind community though I'm not sure where it originated. It replicated by searching for exe files on the computer. Then for every executable it found, it renamed it to have a v in-front of the name and copied itself in place with the original name that would first run the virus and then the file it was supposed to. So if it infected notepad for example, you'd have 2 files, notepad.exe which was the virus, and vNotepad.exe which was the actual notepad.

I read about some US ISP's (specifically Comcast) injecting messages like this into webpages, I just did some Googling and Charter seems to do this as well so I guess others might be too.If you want absolute peace of mind, I would call your ISP (with a number you can find on the website or in a previous statement to be sure) and read them this message. Ask what your data usage is and see if it matches what they see in their system. If it does, there's not much you can do about it sadly other than blocking it with Adblock or uBlock.

Re: Is Stream labs better then OBS studio?

Technically, I use both, using streamlabs as the service to receive donations. For this, it works, though the interface to configure things like the donation alerts is a bit of a mess and not the most accessible thing in the world. For streaming, Streamlabs has their own version of OBS, called Streamlabs OBS and I guess that's what you mean. I tried it. Unlike OBSStudio which is a QT app, the streamlabs one is electron based so appears like a webpage. However, it is extremely inaccessible, with a lot of unlabeled clickable elements, menus appearing at the bottom of the page when clicked on, checkboxes not telling you if they're on or not and having almost no keyboard support, I'd say it's pretty much unusable with a screen reader so you should stick to regular obs.

The Classic vocalizer driver (version 2 that came before Expressive) has already received an update. Strangely enough the English page hasn't been updated but you can download the driver and voices from The portuguese page. I'm using it here and it mostly work great, the premium voices sound OK though the compact voices are experiencing some slight but noticeable stutters. As far as I know, the Expressive driver is also in process of being ported.

Re: TeamTalk bots

From what I heard of this audio bot, he doesn't distribute it. Rather you have to give him your server details and only then he'll just plop an instance of it there. The reason he probably does this and also why there aren't many TT bots, is that unlike Teamspeak or Discord where the developers have public, freely available bot API's and encourage bot development, the developer of TeamTalk doesn't. There is an SDK that allows you to do everything that a normal client can, but he's aiming it more at companies wanting to integrate it into their software (for example the voice chat rooms on the serotek system access network if anyone remembers those). This SDK is also priced appropriately as such, costing somewhere between 6 to 800 euros if memory surves. That puts it out of reach of most people who'd just want to make bots. The TT protocol has been reverse engineered to an extent, which is why we now have things like Dug's TTCom console. In theory you could use its underlying code to make a bot, but its capabilities only extend to text. So bots written this way wouldn't be able to transmit or receive audio from channels.

Re: Looking for a mixer

I'm fairly sure the Xenix 502 can't do this. I should know because I was using one for just about 8 years and is what I upgraded from because it wasn't flexible enough for my use case. I was able to get my microphone and system audio mixed and sent to the main input, but for a streaming situation this ment that everyone I was streaming for was hearing themselves. Granted, the 502 is purely analog and had only 1 master input and output needing a seperate interface to get it to a computer, while the Q802 has a built-in uSB interface, but I'm not sure how good that is. If it only exposes a single input and output over USB and relies on the Analog inputs for you to do your mixing, it won't do what you want, but if you get at least 2 inputs and more outputs then it might work.Regarding the GoXLR, this is also why I mentioned the mini which only costs $150 here. It doesn't have the fancy effects but you still get the mic processing and all the USB channels and I think for many people it's more than enough and priced comparably to similar devices. For making the configuration take effect which you asked about a few posts up, you just have to restart the software. Whenever it starts up it reloads the configuration.

Re: Looking for a mixer

2020-01-22 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : pitermach via Audiogames-reflector

Re: Looking for a mixer

I bought a GoXLR 2 weeks ago after Talon got one a few months back, because he seemd to like and recommend it. I wanted to write a review about it with an emphasis on accessibility, and I'll still do this to give people detailed information about it and expand on what I'm about to say. But in short, for the person that it was aimed for, it's an excellent device. What I mean by that is the GoXLR is designed for people streaming games on Twitch or YouTube from a computer. So instead of having a ton of physical inputs, either as RCA or 6.3 MM jacks, you get just a single line-in apart from your microphone which can be either XLR or 3.5 MM.However, on-top of these, you get 5 channels over USB which are all exposed as separate audio devices in Windows that you can direct sound to, as well as 2 input devices. These are also available as ASIO if used in a DAW like Reaper. You can root the audio from these channels in any way you wish and assign the 4 faders to any of the channels or your microphone gain to quickly adjust their volume. For your Microphone, the GoXLR has a built-in EQ, compressor, Deesser and noise gate which can help you sound better without buying additional hardware or making you have to run your audeio through software effects. There are 2 models, the regular GoXLR as well as the recently released goXLRMini, the main difference being in addition to everything described, the regular model also has an additional effects processor that can do pitch shifting, reverb, distortion and auto-tune and a sampler which lets you play and record samples quickly using 4 large pads.Software wise, the device itself is all physical buttons and faders. You need the software and drivers, which are Windows only, to use it. This is where you run into the one major annoyance. The GoXLR app was written using the juice UI toolkit, which is famous for being completely inaccessible and whose developers have made a concious effort in not caring about improving the situation. That being said, TC-helicon gaming were extremely helpful here. When Talon bought his GoXLR and discovered the problems and reached out to them on Twitter, they hooked him up with the main software developer. Hopefully, we will see accessibility improvements in the software in the future as from what I know they are investigating things like Tolk to work around the UI problem. In the meantime though, said developer helped us out with figuring out a way to use it.All of the configuration for the GoXLR is stored as plain text in XML files, which can just be edited in any text editor like notepad. This way you can enter in pretty much everything you need (Adjust the compressor, Gate and EQ, set volumes, change audio routing, put the 4 faders in different channels, etc). So even though the software itself isn't accessible, you can still adjust your settings and the workaround of manually editing XML files isn't as bad as some of the software used by other audio interfaces where there's sometimes literarly nothing you can do or use autohotkey scripts that click on mouse coordinates which could break if a window is moved in the wrong place. For your particular use case, you can definitely hook up an echo to the GoXLR via the line-in. For Google, it might be more of a problem because none of the Google home speakers have an audio output on them. So I don't think there's any mixer that would be able to support a Google home, unless you get something like an Android phone with a headphone jack and use that as a fake google home speaker.

Re: Macs rearing their heads again.

My biggest gripe with VoiceOver is the performance on the web. I find it gets bogged down very easily. Any relatively complex website, like YouTube or Facebook and you're looking at VO taking a noticeably long time to react to your commands, often to the point you'll hear a lot of busies as Safari catches up with you. Do a read all on a site, like a news article, and 25% of the time you can expect the reading will randomly skip down a couple of lines, or get stuck somewhere and not continueChrome is even slower for VO, clearly the accessibility support is less optimised there so the performance is even worse. Because I spend the majority of my time on the web, I found VoiceOver to get in my way more than it was helping. The other reason I'm slowly gravitating away from the platform isn't strictly accessibility related and is more about the direction Apple's going with it by making it more like iOS by introducing requirements like notorisation exercising more control over what software you can run on it.For Word and Excel, back when I had to do a lot of word processing, Word wasn't accessible and I used Pages which worked pretty well accessibility wise. However, you can't edit a word file in place, so it might visually look slightly different so it won't work for colaborative work. Now, both Word and Excel have accessibility on the Mac, which should definitely handle the basics but I'm not sure how well the more advanced aspects, particularly of Excel, would work. Last I heard most people still did more advanced Microsoft Office work in a Windows VM but someone else could tell you more and it might be worth asking about Microsoft Office on Applevis.Lastly, any native Mac apps that have work put in them to be accessible do work great. All the built-in apps like mail or notes, social media like Twitteriffic, audio Hijack, LaunchBar for productivity which I still haven't found a good Windows equivllent of, all make the platform really great to use. Mac OS itself has some cool features, like a system-wide spellcheck, integration with an iPhone to call and text, and all of these are definitely big pluses. So, if you're planning to be doing a lot of advanced Web or Excel work, I'm not sure a Mac is the best choice. But for many other tasks, you might very well be fine with one. Honestly both platform have things going for them and it's really all down to your usecase.

Re: NVDA on touch screens, does it work OK?

I got the 13-inch surfacebook 2 a couple months ago. First of all If I'm being honest there are definitely computers with better specs to price rayshows out there. I picked it up partially because I got it along with a new braille display because I can just take the tablet portion and leave the base, and it works really well for this. It has a camera which can do Windows hello, which is essentially face ID for windows and in my experience it just works. If you're sitting in-front of the computer and have your head at screen level it'll pick you up just fine though it's quite sensitive to lighting changes. I set it up in ambient lighting in my bedroom, and in indoor areas it picks me up fine. But if I go outside with sunlight I usually have to enter my password. Other positives, the batterylife is great. Microsoft claims 11, 12 hours. I don't know if I ever got that much but I'd say 8 9 ish is definitely doable with basic computing stuff. It's also absolutely quiet. The 13-inch version doesn't have a CPU fan, there's only a fan in the base for the GPU which comes on only if the discrete GPU is in use. And because the CPU is on the tablet portion if you're using it as a laptop, the keyboard and bottom never heat up. On the topic of the keyboard, typing experience is very comparable to an old-school (pre-butterfly) macbook. The keys look and feel very similar, though the layout of the FN keys is a little weird. They put Mute on F4, and the FN key acts like capslock. So if you press it, it just toggles FN lock on and off or you can hold it down in conjunction with a function key. Microsoft actually fixed this with the latest Surface laptop 3 by moving mute to a different key and they also added API's so that screen readers will be able to figure out the state of the FN lock, but for the moment I find myself muting my audio while trying to close out of apps more than I want to admit Finally, briefly about the audio. You have stereo microphones, and they sound great for both voice chat or even just making recordings. The speakers are on the 2 sides of the screen. Maybe they don't have as much bass as Mac speakers, but have really decent mids and highs and project sound toward you very well and you can definitely tell the stereo spread, to the point I gamed on the internal speakers before with great success. There's sometimes a bug with the sound channel closing too quickly with some more responsive synthesizers like Eloquence and NVDA, but it only happens if there's no other sound playing and restarting NVDA fixes it so it's not too big of an issue.Over all, I'm really happy with it, especially about the portability and quietness. But if you don't care about the ability to detach the 2 sides there are cheaper options with better specs, even from Microsoft themselves like the Surface Laptop 3

There's not much too complain, the voices are quite responsive, faster than the old packages Ivona used to offer, both 32 and 64-bit is included, and the DRM is a simple key that's activated offline so you can put it on as many computers that you own as you like. But that's still a week away, so we'll see if third party apps will be able to use them in audio contexts.Alex was added to iOS way back with iOS 8. I'm not sure if this will work, but it's worth a try. You can set the default speech voice for a language for iOS in general under settings>general>accessibility>speech. in iOS 13 this menu is called spoken content. I just looked at it and it looks like it just gives you 1 entry for Spanish and you can select between all voices in every dialect there. If you change it here I think VoiceOver should start using that voice for its automatic language detection reading

For the first year that I had it, it was basically just a gaming machine. Then a year later I got Window-Eyes 4.5 for it along with some additional hardware like an Alva Satellite 544 braille display. This is when I ran into a small problem because in the US and UK, Window-Eyes never had DRM. But in Poland, they were using a USB dongle, and this Del laptop only had a single USB port. Eventually we got someone to help us set everything up with a hub. I have some of my fondest memories on this computer, where I basically self tought myself how to use Window-Eyes, Windows and the internet.

Re: Win32 App Accessibility

2019-07-27 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : pitermach via Audiogames-reflector

Re: Win32 App Accessibility

Not much else that needs to be said. Anything using standard winforms or even the more modern WPF frameworks is very accessible, because it works well with the Windows accessibility API's like UIA that are used by screen readers to do their job. What caused a decline in app accessibility in recent years, at least in my opinion is the prevalance of cross-platform GUI toolkits, which do a better or worse job of exposing accessibility related information to operating systems. WX is by far the best, because it usually just maps most controls to the native controls of a given operating system, so WX apps are really accessible (IE Audacity). However, QT gained even more traction, and while it has an accessibility API the support isn't anywhere nearly as good. For the longest time, the accessibility support wasn't even bundled with the toolkit so you had to ask developers to implement it or copy in DLL files and hope you get it to work. Now, the situation is decent enough on Windows, even better on Linux, but on the Mac side a lot of important QT widgets like trees, tables, lists and combo boxes still don't have any accessibility support so using many apps, like just about every multi-person voice chat solution is frustrating. There's a few more toolkits out there, like GTK which is basically the native on Linux where accessibility is usually perfect, but nonexistant on other platforms, and juice which just straight up draws graphics to the screen so doesn't work well at all. And then there's Electron, which even though makes rather bloated applications can result in some really accessible experiences because they're just web pages, so following web accessibility guidelines results in very accessible, cross platform applications. At least on Windows and Mac because Chromium on Linux currently isn't accessible.

Re: new cell phone recommendations

When it comes to answering calls, the iPhone has a pretty big advantage in terms of simplicity over any Android phone. While you can manually look for the answer button and double-tap on it when a call comes in, the iPhone has what's called the "Magic tap" gesture of tapping twice with 2 fingers, which will answer a call if your phone is ringing, but also end it when you're done talking and want to hang up.If you want to stick with Android, don't go for phones that have stock Android (Pixels, Android One, etc), because they don't offer any simple way of answering calls or voice control. However, the Samsung phones do. I haven't used Android in years, but the Galaxy S4 and S5 both had features to answer calls with the home button and end them with the power button, as well as an option to answer and reject calls with your voice. As far as I know the modern Samsung phones still have a way of quickly answering calls with 1 button and the voice controls may also still be there. Finally, Ever since the Galaxy S6 Samsung started including their own screen reader, called Voice Assistant which uses gestures more similar to an iPhone compared to the normal Talkback. This voice assistant also includes the magic tap gesture, which may also answer calls. Hopefully someone with more recent Android knowledge can chime in with more specifics. In the meantime, if you're considering a Samsung phone, find its user guide on-line, and look in the chapter for accessibility features. It should list whether the phone has a simple way to answer calls there.

For getting ASAP to speak in DOSBox, the mainline official dosbox builds don't work very well with dos screen readers. I raised this with the devs, but they're only interested to do the bare minimum to get it to play games so emulation of certain parts of the system isn't as accurate. However, there are projects that fill in those gaps and they make dos screen readers work pretty well. The one I bundled with Talking Dosbox is Dosbox SVN Daum, but Dosbox-x also works well.Edit: to modify the floppy image, either use a program like winimage to edit it directly, or mount it on your system to copy the files onto it like imDisk or OSFMount

You don't need Wine for TeamTalk as you can get the server packages for Linux from the bearware site. Setup of a TeamTalk server is likewise easy enough. Most of the configuration can be done with a setup wizard that comes with the server. IIRC it also comes with a sample systemd service which will let you have it start with the system, but I'm not sure whether the wizard will copy it for you to the right place and set the file permissions.

TeamTalk is really particular at what kind of files it'll let you stream. Normally only MP3 and wav will work, though installing the kLite codec pack should make it work with more formats. Even then, it only likes files that match the sampling rate of the channel you're in, so that might be what you're running into here.

I personally don't think there's anything wrong with it being in Google Play. As long as it's official and all languages are included, and GOogle didn't seem to flag any issues while approving it - it includes apps that need root, after all, then this can only give it more users. I don't see much of a benefit of the prefered distribution method being grabbed the apk from a random website and sideload it

Newer Windows 10 versions have a feature in Windows Defender to have Windows clean install itself without any software that came with your computer this is how you can access it.If this doesn't work, get the windows 10 media creation tool from Microsoft's website. You'll then have 2 options. You can have it make you an iso image of Windows 10, mount it with explorer (just press enter on it) and run the Windows setup from there telling it to keep nothing. You can also tell the media creation tool to burn the installer onto a flash drive and boot from it and perform the install that way. When Windows is installed, you can find GPD Win 2 drivers here.

Re: Telegram Messenger is now accessible for the blind

2019-03-26 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : pitermach via Audiogames-reflector

Re: Telegram Messenger is now accessible for the blind

Unfortunately, sometimes it takes a large effort from the community to get the attention of a company. Is it sad? Absolutely. But often after the point is made, and the company makes the changes it's being asked to, with or without help, the changes persist and said company changes for better. As another example of this, look at Netflix. Their apps used to be horrible to use with a screen reader and they didn't offer any audio description. The cries got even louder when Daredevil came out... It took a few years, but when Netflix added description to it, they also did a complete 180. Now their apps are mostly very easy to use with Screen Readers and they offer the largest, nearly globally available catalog of described content and are very much in the lead with describing any new releases.Telegram open-sourced their apps. Anyone could fork the client and make changes to it. If the accessibility changes were out there in the public I think there's nothing wrong with the telegram devs taking a shortcut and using them to get a headstart, saving precious developer time in the process. The real test will be seeing if they are commited to keeping the accessibility in the good state it's in now, which considering they released on both iOS and Android might be the case. Now if all the developers of the alternative clients do is loudly complain that Telegram took a shortcut and used their code, they should seriously stop because they're sending the wrong message about the blind community and I wouldn't blame the Telegram devs for deciding maintaining accessibility isn't worth it if all these people do is b. If the issue is that these alternative apps were making money off of the fact the official client was inaccessible, nothing is stopping them from adding additional features making their apps stand out so people have an incentive to keep using and buying them.

Re: Who likes using iMessage?

It all comes down to what your friends use. I suppose in a country like South Africa, or Poland for that matter you're very much right. Most people have Android phones, so iMessage isn't particularly helpful. This was the case for me for a long time. Eventually most of my friends and my entire family migrated to iPhones and we started using iMessages a little bit. It has some advantages over the competition - it's very well integrated with both iOS and Mac OS, while WhatsApp's desktop/web app is a bit frustrating to use, and the occasional iMessage app can come in helpful, for example Spotify. If I share a track using the iMessage app, I get an option to play the track right there in the conversation as well as add it to my library if I like it.Also, with iOS 12.2 which is coming soon Apple made voice messages in iMessage far more useful by improving their quality which is now better than WhatsApp, but they're integrated into the system really well. If someone sends you a voice message, you can just put the phone up to your ear to listen to it, and this works literarly everywhere. The phone is locked and you see the notification on the lock screen? Raise the phone and you'll hear the message. You're working inside another app and get a banner, just lift the phone up and the message will play. You finish listening and want to reply? Same thing. Lift the phone up, talk, and when you put it away the recording will stop. It makes the voice messages incredibly convenient, and now that the quality isn't garbage anymore we'll probably end up using this a lot.

Re: The clash of NVDA and GTA5

My guess is that this has nothing to do with how many resources the game is using. I think what's happening is that the game installs a keyhook when you run it to prevent you from accidentally doing things like leaving the window or opening the start menu by accident, as well as to prevent cheating. NVDA acting weirdly is most likely a side effect because it can no longer see the keys being pressed as they're intercepted by the game (notice that most NVDA keys to read things like the time and the window contents don't work while the GTA window is focused).

Re: The Wonders of Netflix

As someone living in a country where probably less than 5% of the movies broadcast on TV is described and where cinemas only do description during very select and few specialized showings for the blind, I totally agree. There are, however, some people who really hate this idea. Netflix recently tried to do some audio description replacing a human reader with Text To speech (watch fastest car to hear how it sounds like as an example) and people complained it wasn't emotional enough. In my opinion those people are being choosing beggars.Having description stored as a subtitle track is theoretically already possible, and such a system has several advantages - you can customize the voice, but also read the description in braille if you prefer. However, many platforms would need to be updated to take advantage of it - iOS right now is the only one which reads captions thanks to an apple API. But I think even doing what Netflix did with text to speech would be an advantage, because such a description is far cheaper to do, can quickly be translated into other languages, and doesn't have the usual package of rights restrictions associated with traditional audio description tracks.

There's not much to it. You grab the keynote installer, transfer it to the VM (IE by mnaking an ISO containing it) and run it. The installer is really simple. Once it's installed you need to either launch the keynote demo program that came with it, or change to it in your screen reader. The way you do that depends on what screen reader you want to use and which version it's on

Windows 10 comes with an SSH client, more or less. You need to install it by following these steps, and after doing this you can just go into your run dialog and type in ssh and you'll be connected. On older versions of Windows, look for a program called PuTTY, which is by far the most commonly used on Windows. Both the built-in SSH client and PuTTY are accessible with NVDA. With Narrator or JAWS the built-in client will read much better.

Re: Nuance vocaliser just died!

The DRM requirements are, as far as I know, Nuance's job which they required from Tiflotecnia for licensing. The older version 2 of the driver just used a simple name/key system but it got pirated to hel and back they stepped it up for Version 3. This is still not as bad as the Vocalizer driver you can get from code factory, which even though uses a newer version of the engine is poorly coded and includes far more draconian DRM. It needs to be activated any time you want to use it in a portably NVDA instance, it likes to lose activations at every tiny thing like big Windows updates and they are so afraid of someone attempting to crack it that their DRM system will automatically kill certain applications that could aid in making a crack like debuggers which are also used to develop software. So if you're a programmer you literarly couldn't do your job with the code factory ad-on installed. They used to block running on Virtual Machines too, but quickly changed course on that after the rather large group of Mac blind users who virtualise Windows sent them frustrated Emails.

Re: Audio describe startrek tng

My theory for why there isn't a lot of described Star Trek is that the only time they were broadcast with description (which must have been years ago on Sky in the UK judging by what the description track says) whoever was recording didn't do a consistent job or lost the files. We did eventually get the original Series described because it got broadcast on SCI-Fi in the UK, and Discovery thanks to the fact Netflix got worldwide distribution rights as an original series and they do a good job describing originals. So I'm sure that someone somewhere (Sky or the company who did the description to begin with) probably still has all the episodes described. But they may not even have rights to air them anymore so maybe someone like Netflix could obtain the described episode audio tracks. I have no idea how much this would cost or what copyright messing about this would require, though.Anyway, the way I filled in visual gaps while watching Star Trek is by looking at the scripts. This site has most of them. Sometimes, a script posted here is an earlier draft of what actually got shot so it may not be as helpful but 90% of the time this will answer any questions, at least for DS9 and TNG. There are sadly not too many Voyager scripts and nothing for Enterprise so your best bet there is to look up episode summaries on wikipedia or Memory Alpha

Re: My Google Home Max adventures

Re: My Google Home Max adventures

Google play does actually allow you to upload up to I think 5 songs to your account if you have a play music subscription, which you got 12 months for free with the home max. I'm not sure how you do this but if you look on-line it shouldn't be too hard to figure out. In any case if there are missing tracks which you bought elsewhere, you should be able to fill the gaps in Google's catalog easily enough.Needing 2 identical speakers for stereo pairing isn't really too unusual, it makes sense from a physics point of view. If you'd have a large and a smaller speaker playing the left and right channels of a song that makes a lot of use from stereo separation, it would sound completely wrong with one side overpowering the other. Every company that lets you make a stereo pair from 2 wireless speakers (Google, Amazon, Sonos, JBL, Bose) all only let you do it with 2 identical speakers. That being said, as far as I know every Google home is stereo. Because the left and right speakers are in one unit you probably have to be sitting in front of it at a very particular point to even notice it, and the stereo image won't be as wide as having 2 separate units. But you should still notice a bit of stereo separation. Try playing something like Money by Pink Floid which makes for a good test. The audio jack on the Home max is Line-in. It's the only Google home that has one. It allows you to connect older analog sources to it, like your computer or TV for example. All the other stuff like Stereo Pairing is probably all done wirelessly

Re: Sonos discussion

Hi,Yes, they do. You can use Sonos speakers as renderers by casting audio to them although some implementations don't work reliably with this, but for example the cast option built into Windows works. The Sonos controller can also use any UPNP servers on your network and play from them

Re: Is the HomePod really worth it?

I haven’t tried to get the google assistant to work on PC. I use it through the iOS app, which works pretty well. Only thing I had to do )was get a US app store account to get it, as it’s not available in Poland yet.

Re: Is the HomePod really worth it?

@hadi.gsf me neither. Though I found the single play:5 more than satisfactory enough to fill this somewhat large bedroom. It may not have as much stereo separation as my old 2.1 speaker setup that it replaced, but over all it's louder, can fill the room better and has more than enough bass for my needs that I don't really need a sub.Anyway we're getting way OT for this thread. Might be worth starting a new topic for Sonos if you want to keep this  discussion going.

Re: Is the HomePod really worth it?

@Simba Well isn't that fun, we both got drawn into Sonos by the same person! Yes. The play:5 does have a jack at the back. It's one of the reasons I opted to get a play:5, rather than a stereo pair of sonos ones which don't have one. I think Ghorth uses or at least used his play:5 in combination with an echo dot exactly the way you just brought up, so it should work. If the Sonos google integration doesn't include google cast support then I'll probably use it this way as well.
